A Complicated Traa taction. Nashville, Tean., April 7. A. carious complication has aritf n In the State Lerjlsla tare. The affiir his produced considerable excitement, and numbers of people were attracted to the State Capitol this morning. The Kepublican id embers of the Senate give as an explanation ot their ecticn that they regard the Registration bill as an attempt to disfranchiee several thousand Kepublican voterj. On the other hand, the Demoerats claim the object of the bill is to prevent importation of "illegal voters into the chief cities, and to preserve tbe purity of the ballot. About l'rofeaaor UcLno. Bpeclal to the Sentinel. Lafatettk, April s. For some time pait complaints have been made against Professor ilcLane, of Ford ecIigo!, by a score of pupils alleging severe treatment, etc. The falling off in scholars has been unusually large of late and the cause thereof is attributed to Jfrofessor McLane'a method of management. In the course cf bis teachings he h accused of having used expressions unbecoming to young ladies and remarks at which the yourg ladies were of course offended. Professor McLane was interviewed, but tells a story which entirely differs from the aforesaid and rata him into a much different lixht. Mr. W. claims that at the time when he took the position as principal of the school, that the general management was in wantot reform, and that more discipline ought to be used with the scholars, and that such was enforced properly. He claims farther that several young ladies become offended at this, and formed an alliance against him for the purpose of disobeying hia rules; and that most of the story is idle talk:. Proper investigations will be made, and the matter will be cirefally looked after. No person doubts the ability and pood intentions of Prof. M. in reird to his pupils, and it is probable that this will be tbe last of the affair. It has produced grstt excitement, and the Professor has been the subject of much severe criticism. A Tough Citizen. Chicago, April 8. Tost l "At the date of my earliest recollection dentistry as new practiced was unknown. Tfeth ere extracted by resuiar practicing phyticisns generally, abd their only outfit was fen icitrnment known as the 'turnkey' or 'hawk's bill.' It was constructed like "a common tail gimlet with a moveable hoo at tfce end, which could be turned so as to eeize upon any tooth whatever its positior; then ty a twisticg motion tho offending molar was rolled out. In country place3 where pbjeiclnns were eparsely located, men in various cccurilions would ceoo c 'turnley and perform the service. In or;e instance I kuew of a lady who acquired tbo reputation of an expert at tbe business and had quite an extensive practice. The firtt artificial tooth wlsjch I ever saw was inserted by an itinerant dentist It w&necurcd npon a metal pivot or doweil and the pivot was forced into the stump of a decoyed tooth. They Tvere ir.Etle from ivory or cattle's tetti aiul iometimts secured on wood instead of rretal pivote. In 1 "5 the were in this city but three professional denti;t3. Not far from that time son;e one had secured two or mora teeth to n metalic spring which claimed ths adjoining teeth in euch a manner as to hold tbcm in positlcn. That was thought tobs i wonderful achievement and wsi proclaimed to the world. In that year there were elauchtercd ui one phica r ear this city several LuDdred bad of cattle for barrelin.tr, and cartloads cf head3 were piled near the slaughterhouse. I taw one cf those dentists approach them with a saw and ssck and select such sicfcimens as suited him. He then eawed elf tbe nndfr jawsontaininc: the teeth, which be deeircd, and after tilling his sack he put them into his bney and departed. Somebody's month wss doubtless ornEmcnted with those teeth, and they took f atijfucticn in showing their 'ivory.' Since that period I ehail not attempt to describe the inventions, rrceress, and improvement in the cciencp, fori am utterly incapable. Instead of three, we now have twentythree cf tbe prcfetsion In this city." . , A Erldc'4 Suicide at Moute Carlo. I London Pfiily News' The curions tale of a recent 6nicida at Monte Carlo merely illustrates a widespread belief that v.omen'ars more recklces than men. At any public table they may be seen p'ajine hiph. and, as a peneral " rale, restraining the exi ression of the emotions at If &i 83 well s the sex generally thought to beeterr.ir. Wcacna, once started, can not have eff, even to break, the luck, while eho has rf. In her pocket. Bat, on ths other hand, women want more starting than men. Their cartfulnfFs in sinall expecses makts them ugprd the loss of a few pounds as a very serious matter. Taus, among decent people, ladies very seldom play, tbecgh, twhen they begin io lose, they back their bad lnck with extraordinary persistence. Achrk of the German counting house passing his honeymoon on that littus avarum, the Riviera, came to Moots Carlo. He bad jlI.CCO. his employers' money, in his pctfeseion. Dutrneting his own virtue, ho did what is generally eafe he gavo the sum to his brido to keep fcr him. Then he left the rcom for a time, and on hi3 return f mind that tbe untappy girl bad played away all the l,0C0. It does not take long to get rid of that or any ether sum. lie aho learned that she bad drowned herself in tbe eea at the foot cf the rocks. A more dreadfal end to a honeymoon cannot be imagined; nor can any defender of Monte Carlo deny that but for the tcmptatians so publicly offered the miserable woman might now be a kappy wife. Castor-Oil Plant and Flies The discovery that caclor-cfl plants possess the faculty of killing and keeping away flics, mosquitoes and other insects was recently made by a French ecientihe man named llaff&rd, who noticed that certain rooms in his house in hich cestor-oil plants wera growing wore entirely free from theso disagreeable In?ects, althcTJch other apartments were infested with them, lie found lyine near tbe plants great quentilio of dtad thes, and a large number cf dead bodies were hanging to tha under surface of the leaves, and this caused bin to investigate the matter, and tbe discovery wa3 mads that Ihe plants gave out an efEential oil, or some toxic nrinciple, which was deadly to insects. Nothing Male ia Vain. "We are told that nothing was made in vain; but what can be said of the fashionable pirl of the period? Isn't she iuaiden vain? Hood's Eanaparilla is made in Lowell, Maes., where there are more bottles of it sold than of any other sarsaparilla or blood purifier. And it is never taken in vain.
