LEGISLATIVE NOTES.

"lbo House Considering the Specific Appropriation Bill. Am I ar factual Effort to Increase the SaUrlfs of Depntj Wardens. The Oovernor Vetoes the BUI for Prosecuting Claims In the Supreme Court The Message. The Governor yesterday signed the drainage bilL It wm on Dr. Passage's motion that the r-enate Uoed bill was sab titrated for Mr. Treat's ad passed in the Hoaae on Friday, Mr. Trout consenting to the change. Senator Ensley'a bill to nrerent the manufacture and sale of adulterated food tnd medicine, and providing per i! ties for Tiulatioua thereof was dicussed in the Senate yesterday, the attb jtc of oleomargarine receiring a lare measure of attention. Tne bi.l was referred to a spec-al committee. An oid claim of Cornelics Lay for t"2 71 for sixteen head of cattle furnished the Indiana Reform School fer B3J3 in 1ST-;, came np a an item In the Specific Appropriation bill yesterday. It appear that he sold the cattle about the time Frank Ainaworth left the iuatitution, and though he received the proper evidence of the 'sale and a warrant cr the amonnt, he has never been able to get his pay. The c'alm was reported favorably by the .immittee in H31 ,mt was defeated on the statement of a member that Aicaworth had drawn the money and he should pay Lay. This Ainsworth s wears that the money Las never been drawn by him and the item was adopted. Representative McMulien called the Hon -s tu order yesterday morning in the absence of Speaker Jewett, who was detained by a delayed train. After prayir the House revIyd itself into Committee of the Whole on the Speer Appropriation bill, which as under discoaaion during the remainder of the day. The following items were add cd to the bill and adopted: To pay T. F. Davidson ?1WJJ for special cervices as Judge : C. H. Meakin, $'00 for expenses in connection with the Ohio River Commission; Simon P. ThomptOD for legal aervicss in Newiuu Connty; $ i.OdO for erecting a hospital for the Reformatory fr Women and (iris; $3,0 for rental of hall for the Gen eral Assembly since 1870, including gas, fuel. etc. An amendment, to the 8pentic Appropria lion bill, offered by Mr. Hanlon to pay .lohn Craig $1,000 for extra services as Deputy "Warden of the State Prison Souta, developed considerable discussion. Mr. Jewdtt offered an amendment to the amendment to pay Cra: 31 M&, or $-'00 for ea h vear since K. Speaking to the latter, Mr. Jewett said that the Ieputy was a faithful servant, and waa really the responsible par.y in the care of the prisoners. Those opposed to the increase o: salary argued that Crag had taken the oil ice knowirg what the salary waa, and if hiedntiea proved too onerons there was no law to prevent htm from resigning. The present salary is $800. and this was argued as sutbeient. A substitute was on red to make the amendment apply to tbe Wardens of each of the prisons. The substitute and the amendments were severally rejected by a dt isive vote. V E ..OVSBKOK t VETO. The Oovernor yesterday vetoed the bill for the prosecution of claims in ths iprsme Court. A New Railroad. The Toledo, Kokomo and St. Louis B tilroad Company yesterday itai articles of incorporation with the Secretary of State. The road is to run from a point in A lams County, on the eastern line of tbe Biasa, about a distance of one hundred and twentyseven milee to the weatern boundary of the Stme in Vermillion County. The directors are James K Hamilton, Samuel R Fo.let, Theophilua P Brown. Themas L Carpenter, William T. Walker, Henry A. Drown and Jcsiah M. 0' Boyle. Poison at th Front Door. No article entering so generally inU the food of every family has been foand inre villainonsiv adulterated than baking powder. For ths purpose of underselling those powders of absolute purity and whnlcsomAness. which alone are safe for use in foad, hundreds of dealers are putting np bkiog powders with cheap and adulterated cream of tartar, which contains lime: earth, etc., adding strength by the free usa ci a'u u. These adulterated powders are "ahoved'' upon tbe public with the greatest persistency. Tbey are first given aw:iy left in aamplea at private residences, with circulars containinr bogus analyces aud certificates, and falae representations as to their value, etc. Tbia act sf ittelf ia sufficient to condemn them. A first-class article will aall on its merits. No manufacturer whose goads are of valne ( an afford to give them away, iid nohe but the cheapest make and most inferior cr nnmarketable goods require to I a distributed free in order to get the public to use them, and this method is adopted only by parties who have failed to diapase of th-s lr wares through the ordinary and legitimate channels of trade. Free samples of articles of foo-i left at the hon.se should be regarded wi'h suspicion. There ia no guarantee of their wholesomeneaa, while there ia real dar.gsr that thev contain a fatally poisonous compound. Many instances of p?i(paing from ine use of auch aamplea are recorded. The only safe wav is to onaign all such sampiea immediately to toe ash barrel, and to turn a deaf ear to the atatementa made by their ve uders. It is not worthwhile to tn Hie with life and health to the extent of testing every doubtful baking powder that comes along. Better to rely upon au old aud reliable brand, like the Royal, which has by a quarter of a century's constant nsa proved its perfect wholeeomeness and efficiency, or sorre other brand that is not so worthless and cheap that its proprietors can afford to give it away by the cart-load. It ia in its favor that the Royal Bakicg Powder is never given away, sold by mans of lotteries, nor accompanied by chromos, spoons, crockery, or other gifts, except the gilts of absolute purity, wbolesomeness, full weight, and superlative leavening power. I 'a own merits have been its chief advertisement, aod they have secured for it the conatant patronag of the American popie4oan extent beyond the combined sale of al! other baking poweast a.
