FLORIDA. Orange and Their Culture, Gotten, Etc. Lomiwood, l';u, March II. In a recent Issue of your valuable paper, quite a leugthy article appeared written by a Mr. Carr, whom t seems is sojourning at Orlando. In justice to Florida end the orange business, I wish to refute some of Mr. C.'a statements. To begin with, he tells among other things of the cost of making a grove and bow many oranges may he ns a rule ( ?) got from a ten acre grove. He says th it there are usually one hundred trees to the acre, and estimates the crop per tree as aix hundred oranges. The one hundred tree to the acre grove is a thing ot the past, as neatly every one who owns o grove or has had one eet out in the att live years puts frcni forty to sixty trsea to the acre, and as for a grove in a good healthy condition (as it ought to be from the money he spends on it in his estimate) producing only six hundred oranges per tree is all folly. A tree, under ordinary circmistances, when eight to nine years old, will bear anywhere from 1,000 to i,000; consequently on a ten-rcre move of nOO trees, allowing l. JW (a safe estimate) to the tree, you will have a uice little sum of 7 J 1.000 oranges. Now, this tusy seem fearfully exaggerated, but it is OOti To rite a case of wonderful production, tba Speer grove, near Bs:ifo;d, which contains vomething over 5U0 trees, produced ttoroethiog over 1.000.00C oranges Th's is an old grove, hut it has ben keeping Ibis tip for sc me time. Then Mr. C, puts tho cost and receipts together and tlnds himself (figuratively' losing money, or rather that the I costs have exceeded the income of the grive.
