The aocle ty W83 organized In HZ and incorporate! on Jane 7, 18 1 5. It Is undenominational and supported by vclnntaty contributions. Numbers of people in distress are found dally In Its rooms askir fjr helo. Their atory is heard by Mr. Emanuel II. Toland, the jreneiai egent, and nil dt trying caei are provided for. Daring the year ended September lv3i, the contributions amounted to 4 S,l7.V.f, and the cnth payments durin the aaroe year to ?!J -f II 1. which shows HGo.yj exrenditure In exces of rec;Ipts. I,ast j ear W visits wro made, and food and znediciiic furnithed " 111 timei. as alao ?-:(;t.7." given In cash. Abjut 7C0 leading citizecs of I'hlladelphla contribute liberally to the aid of this good work. In conversation with Mr. Toland a few dajs ago, the reporter learned much ns to the rrc;hod3 of the society. Mr. Toland plc tnred graphically the condition of the poor thlr winter, and tho unusual amount of aickness amongst them. They were, he said, un able to pav for a physician, nor could tho Society allord to employ one in every cats. The apentf, however, obtain medicines, and are careful always that they shall bo of the purest character. For cough?, colds and bronchitis, they invariably uea the new rem edy, lied Klar Cough Cuie. He, Mr. Toland, nad ern tho autograph certificate of I'rofeEeor Charles P. Williams, of this city, in which he eaid that In his analysis of the medicine he bad found ro traces of rnarphia or the alkaloids of opium; that neither of thea substances crtertd intothe preparation, and that It Is a new and yaluabl remedy. Prof. "Williams is a well known analytical chemist and Is endorsed by the faculty of Jellcrsoa Medical College. lie wa t formerly profejior of chemistry In tba University of Missouri and State chemist of Delaware. Mr Toland added that the Society bed unbounded con tidence in lied btar Cougii Care, owing to Its marked etlicacy in every case in which it bad been used, as reported by their agents. At pretent, ho said, there wa3 almost an epidemic of coughs in tho city, and it would be necessary for them to lay in a fresh supply of the. medicine. Such ricid chemical testa and tho observation of men accustomed to cases of sickness amon the poor had con yisced him that the remedy is an inestimable boon to all. Evidence euch as that Riven by Mr. Toland is unanswerable. It is true that there may be a few people ready to endorsa anythingor anybody ; but nothing cf this can be suggested of the managers of charitable institutions The responsibilities which rest upon theai are great, and they are careful neither to use any remedy nor stamp It with the seal of their approval until they have thoroughly tested it. It has been contended for ennerations that a cough mixture to be effective must contain opiates cr narcotics, but strong protests have ot late been made by medical men against the use of fuch drugs, and tha new remedy has been declared by them to be a desirable new departure in the treat meat of threat and lung troubles. It is cot simply, however, in public Institutions that people are found who know the virtues of this remedy. The reporter h?ard a most remarkable story from Mr. Joseph E. Tiel. 1,4 ;". North Eleventh street. In this city. Mr. Tlel is a well-known real estate agent He formerly lived at lo I East Forty-ninth street, New York city, and was then business manager of a periodical devoted to the interests of ciyil engineering. While living there he had a severe bronchial affection, following an attack of asthma. His condition became so precarious that in Ostober last, his physician, Dr. Birch, as a lact resort, advised him to go to New Orleans. He gave up business, sold his furniture, and after leaving his family with friends in this city started fcr New Orleats. He waited there, daily expecting to improve, but there was no change for the letter, and at last bia condition became such that, fearing he would be among strangers, he traveled back by easy stages to Philadelphia. When Christmas came he was failing very fast, and had about given up all hope when a friend recommended him to try Kcd Star Conga Care. He did so, and now says that after taking several doses, there was a change for the better, and that after be bad used a few bottles, his bronchial troubles and cough left him, and that he la better ttaa he has been for years. It would have be3n easy for the reporter to continue his inquiries in other directions, as the names of several men prominent in public a tTaira were give a to him u being able to epcac from personal experience of the virtues of the remedy. He confined himself, however, for the present to Hon. William Mntehler. roemb?r of Congress for the Tenth Pennsylvania District. That gentleman stated that he considered Bed Star Cough Cure a most efficacious medicine, and one which marked a new departure in the treatment ol cough?, colda and threat affections. This ODinion he had made public, and so had his friend, United States Senator Blackburn, cf Kentucky, who had derived great benefit from its use. Prof. Jchn J. Caldwell. M. D.. member of the medical societies of New York, Kings County and Baltimore, and the author of several medicaljtreatises, says in giving the result of his analysis and personal observation of lUd Btar Cough Care, that it is a medicine of remarkable purity, and Professor O. Grctbe, a graduate of Kiel, Gernnny, and chemist to the Brooklyn Board of Health, who also analysed it. says that it is free from opiate, and is harmless and curative. Men iiko United States Senators Btackburn and Gorman, who are accustomed to weigh evidence and subject everthing to mental as Ecience docs to chemical examination, have emphatically endorsed the remedy; and the reporter came to the conclusion that all the testimony led up to the central fact that a discovery had been made, the valuö of which the public at once recognized. Blande' Mysterious Tragedy. Mcscie, Ind., Marth 2G The tragedy enacted near Eaton cn Tuesday night, wherein "William Haines wai shot and killed by Bishop Scctt, continues the one theme of conversation In that vicinity as well as here. There is ranch bitter feeling existing azainat Scott among the neighbors and friends of Haines, who censure him severely for such carelcssseea If not down right criminality. A few persons dare to believe that his shot and its effect were intentional, and thay support this belief by the statement that the boys were cot to exceed tpn feet distant from him when he fired, and ha bainj above them cculd have more- easily rarged tbe shot so as to miss than to take tnch deadly efiVct upen them, end further that if he only intended to frighten them he could have as effectually done so with the weapon charged with powder and paper as with leaden shot. Much compassion is, however, expressed for the priscnor, who seems to be as deeply affected by the deed as are the friends of his victim. He was greatly disappointed that
tie Ccrccer s investigation did not releaie Lim from vx-fop, awd that bow ha will have t vast tbe Udions process of a trial bstoM hi?aie can be deterrtiind Th case will Bfe?crtt ! vrj co;iu!icted one, and will elicit run h inttrttt in view of th seem isz irjittry which now overhangs the sad atlair.
