RAILWAY NEWS.

The Bonds of the T., C. and St. L. Practically Sheared by the I., B. and TV. People. Big Four Earnings for the Third Week In March Ballroad "Fever" In Indiana Dying- Out Other Itema of the Rail. W. J. Craig, Receiver of the T., C. and St, L., is In the city on official business. The impression prevails that Vanderbilt owns a controlling interest in the Bee Lice. This is not the caie. He owns but V00 of the 150,000 shares constituting the capital stock of the road. It is claimed that the L . E. and St. L. management is allowing the Evansville, Rockport and Jasper branches of the road to run down to the lowest degree of wretchednets. Emigrant travel is growing heavier, and will begin in earnest about April 1. The Bee Line and Van d alia are securing a Urge amount of this class of business, and It is understood that the various roads will Eosn begin running land excursions again. Ths Peoria, Decatur and Evansville, Louisville, Evansville and St. Louis Air i Line, Louisville and Nashville and Evansville and Terre Haute Reads have come to the front with joint freight tariff No. 1 naming the six elates and grain and lumber rates to all the principal points in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. The K. and T. receives no freight for Greenup, Matoon, Sullivan, Decatur and Lincoln, 111., and the P., D. and . receives no freight from Vincennes, Terre Haute, Danville and Watseka. The rates are very low, and are governed by the Middle and Western States classification. "We have been particularly fortunate this year, so far as accidents are concerned," said a Bee Line cßicial yesterday. 'We did not have a bad accident cr collision on our road during the entire winter, notwithstanding the fsct that the deep knows and intense cold weather had a demoralizing e CTect on tbe railroads throughout the country. There is no doubt, however, but the winter found us with a road-bed and track in as good condition 83 money and labor could place tbem." The Bee Line certainly is in splendid physical condition, for men who travel thcu-acds of miles every year eay that is a pletsnreover the main line proper and all divisiors. Bai6ly one new railroad project has filed articles of incorporation with' the Secretary cf State since the beginniog of the present year, and the outlook for railroad construction is net aa bright as it might be. The very fact, however, that the projectors of a road with "bright prospects" have it incorporated, does not indicate that that line will be built. Not by any means; for if it did, Indiana could boast of nearly 100 more roads than she does. Day alter day last year and the year before, railroads were incorporated, not one-third of which have ever been constructed. The projectors alwajs depended upon subsidies from tbe tcwDS through which the proposed road was to pass, and "in nine cases out of ten their fond hopes were blighted by the refusal of tboee towns to give op the amoint cf money dematded. The project, therefore, went gilujmericg, destined to remain a "paper" railroad forever. Notwithstanding, it is tfirgular that the railroad fever has died out to quick. Now ccmes the information from a reliable source that Austin Corbin, President of the I., B. and W., has practically secured control of the bonds of the Toldeo, Cincinnati and St. Louis Narrow-gauge and that the St. Louis division will be in tha har.dj of the I., B and W. people before the eud of tie coming summer. In eighteen moaths, a local rallrcad man says, this line will te standard gauge from Kckorno to Ea3t Su Louis. At present the line is in anything but fair condition. It is now laid with forty-pound English steel rails and six foot ties, which will have to be torn up. It will ccEt the I., B. and W. about SlO.OoO per mile to convert the road into a broad-gauge and thoroughly equip it, but they can well afford to do this, for it will give them a splendid outlet to St. Louis. Connection is made with the T., C. and St L. at Veedersburgh and notwithstanding the fact that the I., B. and W. will have a longer haul than either the Vandalia or I. and ot. L. they will compete sharply for St. Louis business and no doubt secure a gocd portion of It. BIG rOCB EARNINGS. Mr. E. F. Sbe had said he was bom and raieed in this State, which is true, but soon after her roarrie three years r.go, she rent with herbesbaud to Iowa und has ben living here now for about a year. The statute requires two years re sidenre.acd this wai the reaaoiu ihm divorc suit waa dsmiel. Jt will aim be remembered tbat about a week go tie defendant filed habeas corpus procw dings to gt the custody of wo cbi!dr-n, aliezloc that the mother Iiad no roeanr, while he was, employed at Lis trade, was making good wages, and I steady and indnitiioci. Tbe ccmpJalctaho allied that

the pretent surroundings of the children are not conducive to their morale, and for these reasons he asked that he be civen the custody of the two children. When tbe divorce suit was dismissed the husband consented to the dismissal of the habeas cerpus proceedings, but this was objected to by the mother, who demanded a trial upon the merits of the cafe. Upon this Judge Taylor fixed O o'clock this morning as the hour for a hearing of the case. William Haehl had in the meantime secured one of the children and left the court rcorn with It. Mrs. Haehl observed the movement and gave chase, but at last accounts the father had tbe child. There wai considerable excitement over the affair among the friends of tbe parties, and the proceedings of the court this morning will be watched with cotslderatle interest.
