Tke s-'enato yesterday indefinitely postponed further consideration of the bill concerning th reports of the Sapreme Court and using compensation for the nine. The (iovernor yesterday nppointed Jamea :3Iorria Thompson, of Crawiordsyille, Site Geologist to enccead I'rofecr John Collett. The present incQiubent'ij term expires April 2. The Governoi yesterday signed an act proTiding for the appointment of an additional member of the State Hoard cf Health. The Joard will no- consist of live members Instead of four. The Houso yesterday eusi ended the constitutional rule and pa'ied a bill appropriating fGO.OOO to defray the expenses of the oxtra tension. As the exrenses of the regular ieiou were afcont S'.xj.O'JO, the new appropriation looks ai tnougn the House was preparing for a forty days' ttsjion. The bill to appoint a ? -.ate Eoiler Inspector and fix the fee to be charged for the same, was referred to the Committee on Riqhti and Privileges, yesterday, with irstructlons tosoamond that the fee fjr the first Inacector shall be 3f2 instead c and f jr the r-icond $1 instead of ?1 ). representative Pendleton yesterday received a dispatch that Captain Tal bo tt, a brother of his wife, had just died in Colorado, and Mrs. Talbott would pass through Chicago to-day with the remains en route to Massachusetts for interment. Mr. and Mrs. Pendleton will meet Mrs. Talbott In Chicago, the House having excused him from attendance npon to days session for that purpose. Mr. Loyd's bill to prevent gaming at county fairs came up on a third reading yesterday afternoon. The bill includes a1! agricultural fairs, and makes a wholesale strlxe at all gambling devices which are so common on lair grounds, and which have become so oflensive to Intelligent and moral people who attend the fairs for legitimate purposes. The bill passed by a vote of fcl 10 o. The Metropolitan Police bill came ud in Ihe 8enate yesterday af terncon as the special order, and was the subject o! an animated and lengthy discussion. After considering its provisions for two hours tho bill was indefinitely postponed by a vote of üUtoll, a number of th9 Democrats voting wth the Pepublicans. This action of the Ssnate doubtless puts an end to all legislation npon this subject for the present session. The Evening Minute has a monopoly of the rumor that "a bill will be presented in the legislature in a day or t-o providing lor the purchase or erection of a suitab.o residence on North Meridian or Pennsvlv.ir.ia Etreet, for a Governor's residence." The Minute thinks "it would be in consonance w ith the dignity of the State that sacU provision for the Chief Executive 6hould be made." It is proper to add that the Minute Is not alone in hoidicg this opinion. Daring the difcusiicn on the bill to xe. qulre railroad companies to erect fences along their lines, Mr. Pittemore sent up a resolution, which was declared cut of order by the Speaker, and returned. The resold tion asked the members having railroad pacees to send them up to the desk of the cterk before voting upon the bill. The measure provides that all improve! lands, through which railroad tracks pass, shall be separated from the same by fences erected at the expense cf the companies. The bill passed by a vote of ( to u. Mr. Lojd'8 bill for the organizttioo. and support of the Knigh'stown Institution came up as the spec'a1 order yesterday morning, and under the cill of the previous question was put upon its passage. Mr. Loyd explained tho points cf diflerence between the nieas-nro und the bill pending ia the Senate. The latter fiiej the salaries of Trustees tt f'OO and traveling expenses, and under its provisions the Tmsteea may all bs selected from the tame political party. Tne House b'U makes the palaries. of the Trustees $100. 'tivs snlary of the Saperint3ndent 1.200 which is ?300 lees than at present), and ji:ekes the Board ot Trustees absolutely nonpartisan. The bill passed by a vote o! 87 Iheßenate yesterday afternoon passed the "Knipttstown Home bill after making some -very Ira portent amendments, gome of which were rejected in the House on Tuesday. The bill was amended so as to make a woman one of the Trustees; the Superintendent's salary was increased to $1.500 and the aalary of each Trustee to f50D. The Trustees were empowered to dismiss the Superintendent at their option, the words "for cause" being stricken out. With legard to the political complexion of the Trustees, it is provided that one stall be a Democrat aid one a Republican. The woman member of the board may be a Trohibitionist, a Greenbacker or a Alugjrnmp, according a3 ine uovernor may se fit to appoint. The House bin, reqniriug the teaching in itbe commcn schools of the effects of alcohol and other narroties npon thehnman system, is now in the hands of the Senate Committee on Education and will be reported to the Senate this morning, the majority of the committee favoring its indefinite postpoaexnent ard the minority its passage. Mrs. J. K. Nichol, Mrs. Wocd and Miss Kay were on tfca floor of the Senate yesterday in the interest of the measure. A portion of the opposition, at least, u said to bn based on the belief that seme publishing firm ia interested in iis passage, and 'or this reason a job is eaid to be in the bill. Parties interested in its pasge declare that no publishing co npany has fcten preferred, and that the boot, a ivert'sui b? circuJar which some of the meruberj have jeceivtd, h onlv ATt tisus3io of th . iubjtct and would Bot do f a -book in
the schools. A number of Senators yesterday presented petitions from their constituency asking for the passage of the bill. Representative Favre yesterdsy introduced an Apportionment bill, providing that the number of Senators shall be fixed at thirty and the representative at sixty. The bill was no donbt introduced f or political buccombe, and was met with a motion from lieprf jentative Gooding that it ba rejected. Upon calling the roll eeveral Democrats voted with the Republicans, and ths rcoticn was about to cirry, wnen enough nemters hangt il their votes to defeat it, and the bill was referred to the Committee on Apjorticnmcnt. The bill will, cf coirae, be defeated, but it would have Men discourteous to lejtct it withont reference, and upon this principle the Democrats voted epalCEt the motion to reject. MR, PATT0N AM) THE .rOPRNAL. Representative Patton. cf Snllivan Coaoty, yesterday rose to a question of personal iriviiege, and, holding n copy of the Jourml u!

Once more tbe trnth of that old "chastnut" tajing: "(Jo away from home to hear the ecws," is very fully demonstrated. An 3'asfern paper of recen date eives the wcld tbe information that Indianapolis scalpers are considered greater men than the $ 37 and festive local a.trentp. It also makes known the fact that the aforesaid ecents have bs?n trying tcr many moons to indace the scalpers to leave the city withont the ligfttest ?ucc8. If a man wants to get a "reD"' ia this city, aU be baa to do is to rent a littlo eichet and knife tickets. It is understood that President riwc CJc Deral Manager Carson aud other high officials cf the Monon will make an inspection cf that road during the coming month, and many chf Dj;es and improvements will be decided upon. Betterments will certainly ba made in the Air Line, 'or this is now regarded as one of the most important divisiors. Several new sleeping and chair cars, it is understood, vri 11 be operated between this city and Chicago: also new paslerper coaches and eneiues. Tho Air Line will make harp fight this summer for busiccis to Michigan points. TIG FOCZ XARMXCS. A large number of prominent citizens and members of the Boutoslde Viaduct Association aisemb.eu in tha Council Chamber yesterday afternoon to receive the report of the committee recently appointed to secure, If pois'ble, the palace cf a bill by the General the building Union tracks cro.lnir. The As?mbly providing lor of a viaduct over the at the Virginia avenue meeting was called to order by W. 11. Tucker, permanent Chairman, and the above mentioned committee reported ita inability to cet the aforesaid bill through the Legislature. Immediately upon the readirg of tho report, Hon. V. H English arc?r.rd made a brief epoech In which he taid it was not nectary that the Lftialatnre should a?t in . this matter. He was of tha opinion that the City Council had not acted rif ht or they wonld have taken steps looking to tLe erection of a viaduct long ajjo. It was an important improvement, anl there was enonr.h mcnoy in the City Treasury to build it, and also a suitable Uarket-house. The Tomlinton fnnd alone, he aald, could be used in const; miner this bnildicj, and the revenue alreedy derived from the ealoan tax should be expended in the erection of a viaduct. Not only the Southaide but the entire city would be bsnefitel by the same. Mr. English then moved trtt a committee be appointed to confer with the ralJrca Js ard s'e what tb"f would give In id of a viaduct on Virginia avenue. Adopted. The following were then iv rointed on this committee: John Civm, Hiram S:bert, Lorenz Schmidt, W. H Tucker. A V.. Johnson, W. Hill, Auguat Knhn and V. II. English.
