charlotte thomteon in 'tiiillis deshof." at English's Charlotte Thompson apprs to night for the firit time in "Phillis Dnhor," in the new play of that title. The plot is taken from the story of "Dark Days." The scenes are laid in England and France; it ij romantic and full of pawer. Two of the f ceres that of the ' Murder in the 8no Storm" in England, and the "Siege of Paris," duricg the Franco-Prusdaa War, are startling and vividly interesting. As has been represented, the company possesses beautiful and appropriate costumes for eajti separate production. "RamanotI" was played to & good audience last niüt. The star and her excellent support acted their parts in a highly creditable manner. In the prison scene Hits Thompson's talent showed itself to splendid advantage. "Phillle Denhor' will he repeated at the matinee to-morrow, and in the evening ''Eut Lynne" will conclude the engagement. "fantasma" at the gf.axd. With the heraldiEg cf the wonders of 'Fantasma," the audience which greeted its first performance at the Grand expected much, and anything less than SDmething extraordinary would hare been unsatisfactory. Bat the most vivid imagination w&3 slnrt of the oriental magnificence of the spec'acle, the n aryelous mechanical etfecti, the drollery cf pjntotLime and the attractive specialtics. It is equal in gorgeousness to any of the scene of ' Black Crook" at its best, while devoid of the objectionable features of that epecticular play. "Fautasoia'' is nhokaorre throughout. . Ic reaches the very accbe of spectacular pantomime. The audience is transported into wonderland where the fairies hold dominion. Grand and beautiful tab'eiur strike the eye with admiration. A realistic cyclone illustrates the forces of nature in aDger, th9 arctic regions are rellected with ecenes illustrating the hardships of the et plcrers. A sword combat of one man against four thrills the lookers on as has nosuc.n feat ever beforeseen, and a thousand at.'o one other just such startling effects "Fa.itasrea" is not exclusively a pantocaine Words have been written for two of its char acters ("Fantasma," the rood fairy aueen. and "Zamaliel," the bad King of the Realm cf Heads) by Charles H. Hoyt. It is, o. ccurte, the usual fctory of the demon's pr tecutton of two yours; lovers, who, befriend ed by the good Fairy Jueen, triutmi over their arch-enemy, and at the sau? time overcome the prejudices of tiir irate pe rants. But to secure this result it takes two acts and a harlequinade nine icenes in all and one can hardly count tlie adventures and misadventures detailed by a remarkably clever company in the suorr st ace of 150 minute?. For instance, a showing some of the novel elTecta introduced in "Fantasma," we have a demon dropping out of the clouds to make fcavoc in a rustic village, a witch's chariot, a new kind of magic bell, a life like bull with a i eachaut for breaking and enteriüg, a practical bridge with a convenient tiap for drowning the cIowd, a real etaze cyclone, a deyil's garden therein veetables change to human heads, a mysterious conca which manufactures occupants to order, a transportable grate-tire with a fcappy faculty of placing itself under tn drowsy clown's nether parts, a peripateticchair, a candle troubled with pedestrian i3ui, aüd a f cere more of tricks and effects nr.t now rf called, but all cf which add to ths compleeness of this last venture of the H Bri lons. The allegorical nnale of the first act, Uio, is a great factor in enthusing the house It Is & series of tableaux representing the progress of science as applied to North itM explorations, and the cheers that greet the Greely party "picture' America to the front, loyally enough attest at ouch the patriotism of the auditors and tie cleverness of the Htnlons in wo-k!' up the effect. It should be ende - krd that "Fantasma" is tie idea and inventor, of the Hanlon's. and, accordingly, to tn Hanlons belong the ","prs of th prod-:: tion. Thote'who are faiuil'ar with the C tlnent&l method o! doing pantomimes i l hear with pleasare that nothing ye s.n j. this country has so closely approached t for i:n methods as has "Fantasma." The company of pantomimists proper are entiicly n w in America, and consists of Mon. Louis P zzarello, who did the white face clown "Picco, and whose make up and o;itire methods may oe retarded as new to our pantomime state; of S-g. Gerolamo Pstprini, the Harleuin and yoong 1ovt, wbo;e Bword combat with four antagonists, all attacking at one?, caused a perfeet furore among the mah portion of the audience; Big. Allesandr Argiolini, "Pico's" chum, and "Pantaloon," a tjuiet but effective and graceful pantomimist; of Signorica Rosina Masch1, the persecuted heroine and subsequently bappy "Columbine"; of Sigs. Lcrenzo Car tanioand Pietro Mare, the irate parents or the youg people; and ot Si's. Alolih Ilaccirde, who. as the ' Demon Sprite," gava evidence of a very satisfactory Pinuoitv anJ velocisy of movement. Nat. Jones did y: man rrioe; be was the nomical ttüem8nflgtr, the "Bad Km;;" and the ''FfUid Friend," acd he micht have played three v four mere parts if he had had the time hiadispcfa Kate Davis delivered the roic lines of "Fantasoift" in mcst satisfactory manner. The minor rolc9 were well sustained, an ; the f-mall people were grouped well ano coved about with plenty of life a creat e. sential in a piece of this character. We ha nearly forgotten Phil Purcer, "-ho does t h r--or four animals in excellent öiyle; imie -1 he is the best we have seen in the Una animal delineators. John A. Thompson'' new rcenery is artistic and elegant, and th machinery and properties are naturally eood, because they are from the models of Robert T. Cutler, himself an old time pint mimist. Standing room will be at a premium during the remainder of the engagement, t; night, to-morrow afternoon and to-morro night. Personal Liberty Protection Aasocia tion. About ICO persons were present yesterdu afterncon at 2 o'clock in Mozirt Hall in reponte to the call issued and published iv the papers. Christ Waterman wa mad Temporary Chairman and Loui Essma i. Secretary. After some discussion C C. Hederich, Henry Schwinge, John Huegsle, Frank Maus and P. H. McNeils were appointed Comniitteen on Permanent Oraoi zation. There will l9 another meeting on Sunday afternoon at 2:20 o'clock at Mozirc Hall, when permanent crgan.'zatfcn will h effected, constitution jud by laws adopted end cifcrs eltded.
LEGISLATIVE NOTES.
The Vote Defeating the Appellate Court 111 Reconsidered. The Bill Concerning Prosecutors' Fees Recalled From the Senat . The Rivers' Abandonment of 03ca Ueaeure Provokes a Lengthy Dlpcuesion. The Senate w li meet again this afternoon, having been adjourned f jr the past two days. The House having ordered an extra clerk, it is understood that Miss Emma Hennix, of New AJbarjy, who terved as fcldlng clerk daring the regular session, will be given the pesition. A resolution was adopted in the House yesterday afternoon instructing the Clerk of the Supreme Court to report the number of cases on the docket and the total number decided duricg the past year. The colored citizens will meet in the Supreme Court room on Monday uiht for the purpose cf ratifying the action of the Legislature in passing the Civil Rights bill. Senator Thompson, the author of the bill, and Representative Gooding, who was iti special champion in the House, will make speeches on the occasion. It is understood that the friends of Dr. Edenharter, Councilman from the Eigtu Ward, will nrge him for a position In the Pension OflSce here. It is geneallv conceded that Mayor Zallinger. of Foit Wayne, will be appointed and the position desired for the Doctor by his friends, is the next in rank In the cilice. The House adjourned yesterday afternoon till 2 o'clock Satuiday, but an arrangement has been made for adjourning again at that time till Monday. It is not expected that a quorum will be present on Saturday and for this reason another adjournment will be i-ecessary. Very few of the members who left yesterday will return till Manday. By a vote of 40 to 37 the Hocse yesterday reconsidered its action in defeating the Appellate Court bill, and .0(0 copies of the same was ordered printed. The Judges of the Supreme Court are unanimous in the opinion that some relief is necessary, and it may be that the bill will yet tret through. The opposition in the House has been very determined, but the fact that the vote defeit itg the bill has been reconsidered gives seme gleam cf hope that it may j et pass. In his explanation of his vote on Hoa?e bill l.'O, concerning the teaching of German in the schools, Mr. Browning was yesterday incorrectly quoted as saying: "If the time comes to discriminate against either the Germans or the colored raca, 1 shall discriminate against the Germans." What he did say was exactly the ravtrse: "If tne time caniei to difcriminate against either the Germans or the colored race, I shall discriminate asaicst the colored race; but there is no need cf any discrimination against either." The opposition of the prosecuting: attorneys to the passage of House bill 377, which, cuts off their fees in cases where pleas of guilty are entered, seems to have had a salutary effect, and the House yesterday adopted a motion to call the bill back from ths S-u-ate. The author cf the bill protested agai ist such action, asserting that there was a strong lobby influence atworktodefeat the bill, a id that the proposition to call it back was only another way of defeating it. He was oppoj?d to the delay, which h8 asserted endangered its passage. The main objection to the bid, which seems not to have been well uud?r stood when it tased the House, is the po vision "that if a defendant, on arraignment, pleads gnilty, the Jnstlcs shall not noti'" the prcsecutor or his deputy, and in no c-.se shall a fee be allowed a proeecutint? attorney unless be or his deputy is present." The till introicctfd by Mr. ItWers, of Johneon, providing that county cllice3 shall be declared vacant when thy holders thsreof shall have b?en absent from theai, without tcood cause, for tixty days, came up yesterday ou a third railing, and the entire afternoon was consumed in ill ii?cu9fiIon of lis provision tnd the causes which gave rise tails intrj li ("tion. Mr. Reaves, of Brib.3lom;s, moved tc rf fcr the b ll to the Judiciary 0 n,mittee, and explained that it was meint to -fleet only one person, Jeffmon C!?mjir, the Recorder of Johnson County, who hii abandoned his office, which wai now tilled by his brother, who bad pa:d off his debts. He wanted the bill amended so as to exempt this case from its provisions, because he believed that the crhce was now competently rilled bv a man who had eacriticad his private fortune to pay the debts of an erring brother. Adrzeu or more n emhers spoke upon the bill, among them Mr. River, its anihor, who olairued that the r aa?e of the bill was demanded by the people of his ounty; that the present statu of affairs left the records in doubt, and might be the cause of endless litigation if sjm step were oot taken to till the oCice properly. He denied that there was any etlort to throw Clemmer's brother out of the otlics. but siid hat he bad promised and wouid use his influerce to have the present incumbent appointed by the Commissioners should the bill rasi. Considerable interest and no sir a'l amount of feeling have been worked up by the introduction of th bill, and up to adjournment yesterday ro vote wat takn The matter will 'come up egain on Moadsy asuntinishedbusir.es?.
