A HUSEN EX TS. A KAU I: M.Y. it The welcome tendered the return engagerrentof UA lUz Baby" last night was cordial, Loth In numbers and acclamation. It was noticeable that a considerable part of the audience were play goers who had seen the comedy on its f jrmr visit in December. Nor did the36 fail to rcalizs added pleasure. While the ca6t is identically the same, there are new minor features, while with the nonthsof experience the several membera of tbe company have brightened up their sserai roles. What the play is has already been so f ally told in tbe Sentinel as to need no recounting. Indeed, there is no plot more than to furnish opportunities for illustrating tbe very groteeq ue or very delightful characters tbe playwright has evolrfd. "Old Snort," the central figure, is one of i:ire possibilities ff r mirth-making, and nothing less or more can be paid for Mr. Frauk Daniels than that he has lft no opportunity unimproved. It isoLeofthe very funniest rolei ever conceived, and rendered in the happie?t m.nner m;inab:e. Mr. C. II. Dre m "1juv Jay," aruate r drogist, lends i,'racsful actit S and admirable vocallara to bi3 pirt. Mtfs Bppie Sanson gives a mare ciiiraiing ''Vtnub" than before, though that eeeme2 hardly fXHible, while Mies Louis3 Eissing, "Ciairctte," and Misses Carrie Lane and Lina Jackson, aa companion school girls, are a wintoroe trio, ao pretty In person as tbf y are captivating in song. Mies Helen Beimer, as "Miss Pratt," the boarding school mistms, and Mr. Mark Sullivan, as the "Policeman," do intelligent and Ingeaious work, while Messrs. Conner, Osgood aid Stedman are equal to the demands of their parts. The three remaining performances of this evening, to-morrow evening and to morrow' matinee constitute a season of exceptio 1 merrimeBt at tbe Grand. As this is the Ian opportunity of the season for seeing "A Big Baby" no one should miss it. English's orr.EA hoie. A large audience witnessed Charlotte Thompson's new version of "Jane Eyre" last night at English's. A great many nad Fetn the old version of the story played bef jre. and were no doubt anxious to see it in its new dress, as it were. To judge from the looks of gratification on many ot the fac?a and the loud and frequent marks of approval, they must have been agreeably surprised at beholding the new beauties of scenery and action of the play, brought out as distinct as tho cut ot a diamond ou'a cane of g'ass, that others had left unnoticed and untouched. Miss Thompson, as the poor, ptrsicuted orphan, filled the part with so itjuch pathos that more than ona pair ot eyes were blinded for the tirne bains with teaMr. Craig, as "Lord Bochester," Dlajed thv part with tf coining dignity. Hehasaiiir stfge presence and a voice sonorous and ilt-t tincr. His action is natural and unstrained Mr. Wocdereon, as 'Jacob," kept th audience rippling with lanchter whenever be appeared ia a ecene. His candle-li2Uinvr dance was rendered in tuch a graceful, Jaogtable way as to call for an encore. Mr. 't ranee, aa tbe "Frenchman," was perfect in fcord and action. MUs Dragon, ai tbe "Mania c In both make-up and action created a eensaticn. Her mad laughter, as sue sels fire to -'Lord EocbesterV bed-chamber, snt a cold cbill through the audience. Take it all in all, the star and her admirable sip port merit liberal patronage during their stay in our city. To-night "Nell Gwyrene" will be produced with Miss Thompson in the title role. The play is a new one It ;s a story of the times of Charles 11., and is rplete with romance and light comedy. M. Craig apt cars as the "Dake of Richmond.' Local Courts. SUPERIOR COCF.T. Koora 1. Hon. The car was bickeu in two piece?. The atone were uninjured. Ho Was Acquitted. W. L Xelbert, the yoang man arrested here some time ago at the instance of his step-father on a charge of forgery, and returned to Olatbe, Kan., where the alleged crime was committed, is in the city, having been released by the authorities. The evidence, he says, showed that he had been given authority to sign his step-father's name to certain documents.
RAILWAY NEWS.
Steel Ralls for the Vandalla The 1111. ncls Midland to be Sold During the Summer. Bailroad construction In this State, and especially in the southern part, will begin in earnest about April 1. The traffic agreement formed some time ago between the C, H. and D. and Air Line is proving of great benefit to both roads. The local agents are still making effoits to rid the city of scalpen, but they evidently don't go about it in the right way, for these gentry are living in the lap of lnxuiy and the impreesiou prevails abroad thai -y have more "flüence" than the General Tai tei.gi r Agents themselves. Soma of the Leal 8g-Efsay vh.t they can do nothing catll tLej the assistance of the passenger rp-ri-rtrt&'atltcb a foreign lints, and these b!e Prs''fi far eoute r-nori or other are net diapCK1 to join haud3 with their Indianapolis brttbjen. It la now almost definitely settled that the sale of the Illinois Midland will :ake place during the corrirg summer. The indebtedness is climbing higher and higber every day. A railroad man said, yesterday, that $30u,OCO would be aufiicient to place the road in proper condition. Experts, who have examined the property, are of tbe same opinion. This wouJd include both improvements ia the roadbed and rolling stock. There are a large number of persons who still think that the IllinoiS9 Midland will fall into the hands of the Vaadalia people. The Vandalia folks will in a few days receive a lare shipnjent ot steel rails from Pittburg, and the ten miles of read oa the Indiana division now laid with iron will be "stee.td" at once. Other improvements in tne road bed and bridges at certain points along the line will also be made th:3 year. ane anoaua rants among the best roads in the country already, and a railroad man. who hfes traveled a great dal, said yes'orday inai uiere wexe very lev lines eist of the Al legheuys to ba compared with it. Not with spending the fact that its Loganspirt division was expofed to as much bad weather during the past winter as any other road in the State of Indiana, not a single accident wes reported from it; all owing to the splendid condition of the road bed, track and equip ments. The management is justified in feel ing proud of its record. Llysterloua Disappearance. David Hendricks, of Van Bureu Township Shi lby County, came to this city last Thursday, in his bny, to collect some money and pay off a debt. He went north of the city and coliscted between 100 andJöOO and returned, pntting np hii horse and buggy at Gates & Pray'o stables, oa Eist Market. He then started away, sayinp tbat ue was going to draw his pension. , The man whom he was owing called at the stable and asked for him. Since tbat time Hendricks has net been eeen and thare are some fear lett he has met with mishan. He is a well known farmer of Shelby County, owns con siderable property and has a wife and several children. iMHANAroLis, Ind., March. !, S3. J. W.
