The 3peaSer then dTXit upon the advantages of a iree edacation, saying that when the educated youth stepped forth to till a man's part lie wa in duty bonnd to become a law-a'bid-ii g citizen. The vicion9 and criminal elexnent never come, he said, from the rank of the edocitec', but were iu nice cases onto! len illiterate. The Major wai followed by Hon. J. V. Holccrub, who, in the courjo of his remarks, ?aid it would not be doubted that the averse tax-payer coald have his children educated cheaper in the public schools than in .the privat institution. Ignoranca and Tcverty, he eaid, were inseparable. JVncrance was the read to pomty wlile intellect was the way to competence. It w:? a threat privilefre to live in a cultivated community. It was b;rame they believed that the fund had been carefully managed. If the Hih School ever ailed, it would be because its object would net be apprehended. The High School was rot bronght into existence merely for th purpese cf preparing boys for.college. It . as a school for tbe ambitious boy, fitting h in for the practical walks of life. OMany improvements will be made this spring in the hotel at Lake Maiinkuckee. During the coming summer the Vandalra people expect to secure a large amount tf business to this point. There is still some discussion among engineers as to whether or not an engine that has been "soaped'' can b3 moved. Many hold tbat an engine is useless when her boiler is tilled with eoapy water, while otnerj are of the opiLion that ehe will move, batata very low rate of speed. AMÜSEMENTS "vicior. m i:an; ' at ths 'i: vm. A largely increased and thoroughly dalihtcd audience witnessfd the second performance of Henry Guy Carletou'a wonderfully strong play, ' Victor Durand," at ths Grand Optra House last night, and a3 given by the Wallack Company, wa3 a genuine dramatic treat. 4 Victor Durand" is a remirkably ingenious and interesting play. Tee plot is ingenious, wetl-sustained and almost steadily freighted with the absorbing element of euspense. But the merit dees not stop here. The plot has been made tributary to exhibitions and contrasts of human tature and character, in dramatic situations of rer.iarfcable strength all the more remarkable because of their simplicity. In otter word?, "V-c-tor Durand" not only unravels a ray-story by means of exciting inchants, but makps an irresistible apoeil to i human sympathy by showing tbe workings cf lhe human heart, as attfcted by the tusI picn cf Igyp. under circans:dnces that are I cth surprising ::d pathetic, without ceast ii-.g to be consistent and rational. More exi tracrdinary still, tte ection cf the play I nlu'C&t always exceeds its language. Mr. the telling; he bus told it in such a way as to develop characters not less than situations, and to provide opportunities for acting: and he has not washed word'. The T :ece i9 written in a quics, clear, nervous style, audit contains few long speeches. The culcest censor who will thoughtfully consider "Victor Durand," must conclude that it is 'an excellent play, well digested in the srenie, set down with as mur.h modesty as cunning.1' and veil worthy cf theac?eptä:i?e bfstowed on it last night. Thecompau7 presentirg it is one of tbe most evenly balanced and thoroughly capable tbat La3 been seen here this season, every part being givca in the most artiotic, manner. "Standing room." should be at a premium for the two remaining performances t'ais afternoon and to-night. "iief.ts ok oak" at English' 5, I.cst night was tue sixth of the "Heart3 of Pak" performances, the business b9ing as satisfactory as at the first. This is a strong ar snrccnt In its favor, as it must be an excelknt attraction presented by just as excellent company to give eight performances of one play without canceling before half of the en-js-emcnt ha9 been played. A matinee this filterrocn at low prices and the nopsaranca to-night ends the engacement. Those who have as yet not witnessed this home drama, v-ith brave and sacriucing "Terry," good old "Uncls Davy," biutf end tough "Osen," tcntle and pretty "Crystal" ar.d "The Baby," the cutest little actress in iho world, should go or they will miss a treat.
