THE CABINET. Coraetbinjr of tba Democratic Opinion With Reference to Mr. Cleveland's Adyleere.

The announcement of Mr. Cleye'ana'a Cabinet yesteidsy was well received by the local Democracy, and the opinion on all tides was freely expressed that he had called round him a clasa of men in whom ihe country as well as the party repose the TitiLOst confidfcce. Some thought that the Cabinet cfiicea could possibly Laye been f etter distributed, trat no one appeared to deel the least donbt regarding the ability, He jatriotiem or the epecial fitness ttf Mr. Cleveland's advisers for lfc! re?rective pcsitions which they iad been called npon to 11. With the exteptionof one or two, they are all men of 3org: experience in public life, arid are conlessedlv io the front rank of American statesmanship. The opinion prevaili amon tbe local Democracy that the selections of ihe President are an earnest to the people 11 ut Iiis administration will be progressive, hont si and economical. It can cot t der.led that tbre were mny citizens of Indianapolis. llepablicsrm aj wil as Ieniccrat3, who hoped persistently to tin est hour that Ex-Senator MeDaiald's xiame would at th last appear in the list. 11 ere is no rmtstion bat tbe disappointment over his not being in the Cabinet is widespread in Indiana. Perhaps of all the Democrats in the Stats Mr. McDonald feels the lt9l diiappointment. and the little he daes if el, if any at all, is on account of his friends rather than for himself. A Sentinel representative, with the list of appointees in hand, called on Mr. McDonald for an expresEsion of opinion on the complexion of tbe Cabinet He had already teen the nominations. Being satisfied that the nnefdeial announcements published on "Wednesday were authentic, he was not surnrisul a 5e terday's confirmation of ir. The President bad exercised his undoubted liht. be Baid, ir maklm; his selections, ani o far a3 the material cf which the Cabinet "wai composed no w"ll grounded objections could be made. Mr. McDinald thoazht lbat in geographical distribution the President had been less fortunate, and might ex"ptct rr.ore or less expressions of disappoint zrrent from the sections of the country that tera to Lave been neglected. Tne individual members of the Cabinet he pronounced men of acknowledged character, and held lnoee of tbem with whom he was acquainted lo be bejend question gentlemen ot ability and integrity. "Yen do not appear, Senator, to be suffering any personal disappointment from your jieme not appearing in the list of appointor," remarked the Sentinel. "Ihen my appearance does not derive," responded Mr. McDonald, with one of his heaity lacghs. 'I am profoundly gratful io my friends, especially to my late associates in Congress and the Democratic party of Indiana; for the earnestness "wiih which they have pressed my name for b place in the Cabinet, and if it had been tendered me my acceptance would have been sclely on their account so as not to disappoint them, and against my own Inclination and interest. "It has been repeatedly stated in the press 1 hat Mr. Hendricks has not favored your appointment. Have you any camments to znake npon this?1' "Nothing that has heretofore appeared on lhat subject pro or con has been either ntlered or inspired by rile and all that I have to say is that from the beet information I ihave Mr. Hendricks has said nothing la my ifavor. though possibly nothing against me. 3n this respect his conrsa has differed from lhat of every other leading Democrat of Indians, so far as I know." What of President Cleveland's inaugural ?" "I am very much pleased with it It w&3 in od est and brief, but full of earnest words, zxttered by one who seemed fully conscious nf the weighty responsibilities heVas assuming and determined to devote his best energies to their faithful discharge." AMUSEMENTS. iPlfKSnVji GR&5D OI'ERA HOISE "VICTOR DURAND.'" There is no strain for efect in saying that the 5.ijze of tbe Grand furnished last even3ng the strongest play and the strouges caU ihat has beu upoH oar boards this season. Jibe play in less competent hands would be attractive; the company would give in a weaker play an admirable performance, uut iere we have most effective plot, scenery, situations and dialogue, and a galaxy of stars to interpret the thrilling characters the 3!aywright gave to "Victor Darand." The scenes are laid in I aris, and American people are prominent tn the characters. "Ilnth" (Miss Sophie Evre). the eldest daughter ot "John Vaughn, loves and -weds "Henri Favart"(Mr. George Clarke) wbom she had first met in JU.nna. "Hutu ltd formerly been betrotbed to "Pauj LDean" (Mr. Fred Coroett), who, four year prior to her marriage, was assaulted on a train between Morocco and Paris, robbed and so rcunded on the head that be was p:c?d in an asylum for tbe insane. "Baron de Mersac" (Sir. Nerton Gotthold), an adventurer and polished villain, discovers in "Henri Favart" the person of "Victor Durand." who has been unjustly accused and convicted o the assault on "I'aul Dt-an'' and fenteuced to tbe galleys lor life, but who had t scaped after two years of imprisonment. "De Meraac" himself had committed the crime, but, intent upon the obtaining of "Ruth," he comes into the bsrpy circle at Paris, and, denouncing "Favait" a3 an escaped convict,, has him rearrested. Meantime "Septimus Ssverus Tubb' (Mr. W. H. Denny), deeply involved in eyeglass, diaries, ha'J idiocy atd love for "Violet," "Ruth's1 jounger s'ster, comes on a visit and demonstrating that he is not so big a fool as he looks to be, recalls having met "Da Merac" and his accomplice, "Antonio Sforza" (Mr. Roland Buckstone). an Italian or3n grinder, and by aid of certain findings In his diaries and otherwise, exposes the real criminal, and after a terrible ordeal for the innocent ones, establishes "Fovrat's" Innocence. Anything like an adequate recital of the . ingenions, stronand entertaining situations can not here be essayed. Nor can anything lew than an observation of the performance give a correct estimate of the exceeding .force end crace of rendition of the several roles. Tbe ctst is a notable one, and such . as is seldom teen grouped off the metropolis fcosrds. We can faithfully promise an nn- : csual feast for all who may see "Victor Durand." The play runs the remainder of the week, including Saturday matinee. "UKAF.TS OF OAK" AT ENGLISH?. Ar other fair -tired audience witnessed this teantiful drama of American life and grit at English's lat night. "The Bibj" atiU lontinues the absorbing object of interest with the fair sex. It is a piain but powerlai drarra, possessing beautiful scenery. Taoie "who have not seen it should go before the "eekcJoiej. Don't forget the maticea tomorrow at cheap prices Cbarloit- Thompson, supported by C. G. Crais and a coed company, all of next week, in -Jane Eyr," "Phillis." Charlotte 'Thompson will be at English's all next week in a round of her popalar plays. The dude in "Victor Daraud" is eimply immense. Hlsmonotonus 'Wother fellow'' takes the house by storm. "The best play and the best company of the season" is the universal yerdict of everybody who saw "Victor Durand" at the Grand last night. The return of Charlie Hoyt's laughing triumph, "A Rag Baby," to tbe Grand the first part of next week promises to be a most popular event. Tbe popular Dime Museum is filled to overflowing every afternoon and evening this week, and the ihow given is one of the best of the season. The "Victor Darand" matinee at the Grand to-morrow afternoon will be plaved at popu'ar prif3 twenty he a id ri'ty cents, with seventy-five cents for reserved seats. W.J. Fielding represanting the Hsnloa Erotberb' "FanUferua" Cooipany, which ap-
