CONTESTED ritllDKNTIAL ELKCTIO
The Four Jreat Contt in Onr !rtoral College. Wafh!ceton Lttter toCIevcal Lr1er. There have been during our history to ir dispnted lrf ident?al elections. Ia most of these cases the election has been thrown into the Hue of Ilfpreientatives. and the Congressmen, vot1rg by Str.te, have elected tbe Prejident. F.ach State has one vote, and the Conititntion originally required Congress to cheese from the two highest ca'idldtt-s on the list. By the Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution they may now choo? from tie three bihfst. The first dis 1 t.tfd election vre.3 that of lCO, In Wbirh J-Üeron and Barr had a tie vo'e of 7J eurb. J?oth cf the candidates cre Deuio-c?6t-, and the House was Federalists. It eltdta Jeirerscn enddtfeited Burr, wh , by i) e then rule, b?came Vice Presideut. The Feder I 'si", however. r:tTly wanted I'nrr, 8? he wa a New York nm, and ou'd be more favorab'e to the coma trtia1 intertrts of New Fiiglnrid and bp North. They held a cauca3 and ''etermired to vcta fr htm, but olp of their members went hack on the rj icus a- just tbe rong time, and thn e't-. :id Jt. trrcn. In this vote- Biyard. of Dalawar, en ancestral relative of Tom Biyard, was or e cf the members, and it is said that ha decided in ceriairi eaieriencies rather thaa Le-vp a protracttd elecii-a. The law rrovides that while voting ou such a subject tbe houe shall not adjourn withoat coming to a decision. At this l'esiden tial elect fifi it sat for eiven days, though it Uok uumergu? leceH?. The election of l.Cl was also settled in the House. Tbe eontfst was heten John (u r,cy Adams then Monro s'd Sjretary of Stat;" Htnry C'ay, Speaker of tha Hou-; V;ji:r.i H. Crawford, Stcreta'3 of the Trft-nry, and Andrew Jackson, who b.d been Fe cater, but was now a i private cith:n of Tennessee. Clay was the fourth in the 1 s and was consequently ineFuib'.e to election. His vote wan such, however, that tbe throwing of it t either Adtms or Jackson would have secured tbe election of either. Cloy gave his vore to Adams and made him l';i :? der.t. Adams appointed him his Scretfiry of ttf. and straightway the cry arose that his oihee had bsen given h;m as a price for his eitctoral votts Andrew J(4"kson believed it, and I don't tbint tha impression was never quite removed from his mind. John Randolph accused Ciay of it on th I'.oor of the Senate, say i eg that his c imblnatir 11 with Adams was a combination ot Biifil and Buck George a combination of the Puritan and blackleg." For this it was that Clay challenged Randolph to that noted dael which was fought 00 Virginia soil near Washington, with.no material injury to either. In the third great electoral dispute the question was the choice of a Vice President. This was settled by the Senate. Riebard M. Johnson was chosen to act a3 Vice President with Martin Van Baren a3 President. The fourth electoral trouble, that of Hayes and Tilden, is too well known to ueed mention. It is enoach to say that our whole electoral system is cf euch a rature that it needs reformation. Congress haibesn proposing legislation in regard to it ever aince lso, and we have periodical dissuasions in regard to it. These will probably continue until some radical wrong is dune by its present action, and then tbe trouble will be remedied. Old PaddUbags for the Utbioet. i Louisville Courier Journal Tbe President will make a great mistake, both in justice and In policy, if he omits the name of ex-Senator Josedh K. McDonald from the list of his advisers. A peculiar train of circumstances has in eorae measure conspired to thwart the greater career of this truly great man. He is a man of tbe most perfectly balanced character. Of judgment s perfect as his courage, as unostentatious affecting none of the graces and aits cf the demagogue, yet of commanding intellectual power and integrity, admirably trained, this ReDresentative Democrat and true man ha. I a record of services and opinions which few of h;s contemporaries can match. On all of tbe great issues of the last thirty years he ba? been sound to the core. His eelection would be another gnarantee to the country, and, eside from its fitness and popularity, wocld give the President a colleague and friend equal to every demand and after hi3 own heait.
