7?rcepcts of tbe Indiana and Illinois Southern The Uonon Presidency Otner Items Relative to Railroads and Employe.
It appears that the Pan-Handle people look upon the electric headlight with favor. Several of their engines have already been f quipped wlih this light, Dave Ed wards, formerly connected with the Use LiDe, and well Known In Indisnapel s railroad circles, baa been appointed "Western agent of the C. and O., with headi;carten at Cincinnati. It is understood that the system of paying 0 J employes by checks, thus abolishing the 5)iy-car, will soon be introduced on the C, U. and V. This sut'm id in vogue on the 3., 1$. and W.t Bee L'ne arid many other imj crtant roads, and Las given Kret aatisfic lion to all concerned. Chalmers Droffn, the well known Big Fonr j,as3enger conductor, will to-morrow succeed George Reck as City Tasaanger Agent. Mr, .Reck Uiea service with the Pennsylvania Company. The Big Four freight department 5a also to be reorganized, and Mr. Hafcbs, As "tlitant General Agent, will probably remove ixls headquarters to Chicago. The-Vandalia'a threatened withdrawal Jrom the pool wa3 thoroughly discussed yesterday, but the opinion prevailed that no tnch action would be taken. The complaints xuade were acknowledged to be true toa reat atent, but the ecaallne;s of the percentage tv? exp!a;nd by the claim that the etron? reads at on id concede something to the weak. St. Louis Exchange. There vas : time when the ..majority of tbe Indianapcnhs roads used wood in their tsiines altogether. Coal was then very ecarce, while timber was very plentiful. It i- juät the reverse now, and none of thsroad3 i ading from this city use wood. The coal iupplvi3 now far in excess of the demand, fed, infect, the great commercial centers re overstocked with it, as was stated in a lengthy article which appeared in the Sentinel some time since. "Is the rumor to the effect that Colonel "William Djwd will beofiered the Presidency of the Monon at the coming annual meeting irne?" was asked of a gentleman conversant "With the aHairs of that road. "I should judge." replied he, 'from what I have heard that It is. I hope there is some truth in it, JorMr. Dowd is just the man for that oositlon." On being asked if he thought "that Mr. Dowd would accept the position the gentleman replied in the affirmative. It is understood that General Manager Carson is an no as for the appointment of Mr. Dowd. It is generally conceded that the Indiana aad Illinois Southern has not been permanently abandoned, and many believe that there is some foundation for the report that the Vandalia people intend to purchase it, while others are of the opinion that it will fall into the hands of a syndicate of Eastern capitalists. A few thousand dollars will place the I. and I. 8. in as good physical condition as Lie majority of the smaller Indiana and Illinois roads, and with good management it will become a paying property. An eminent physician writes a lengthy article in the current number of the Popular Science Monthly, on the Bight and hearing of rail read employes, in which he says: It Jim not been the duty of the writer to investigate cases of accidents which might have 1 een caused oy defects of sight, but he lias been assured by officials that a solution will hereafter be found in them fur those hitherto insolab! mvsteiies whare nen, otherwise credible, have S3 flitty contradictf themselves and the circamstances of ih case. By one prominent officer i e was told that, being upon a train at liight, delayed by some slight accident, he hiimelf took a red lantern, and going a j.rocer distance back, placed himseU on the track in the way of an oncoming train, but, iär.d:rg his light not observed he was comiel!ed to dash it Into the cab to attract the engineer's attention, and arrest him in his progiew to a collision. Upon the examination of another engineer, his superior oiücer "being present and convinced ot his marked color blindness, remarked that, bat a short lime before, the man had run iato the rear of a train properly protected by a red light in the hands of a braker.ian some distance in the rear, that the most careful investigation hal resulted only in the suspension of the brakeTi an for not haviDg gone far eiiona bick, tut that ne was now tat sSed thu th-i ci.or '"'indness of tte engineer tiad fojen the real caue of the accident. Soma slight 0r minor accident recently led t . the disovery that another engineer had by some oversight not -iWn tes'ei in his division, and this led to bis examination and detection there, an i to 1.19 con v:ction oy the writer as a color blind. J-ull another case now presents itself. An !'trir.pt-r eome time ago ran over and killed a brakeman holding a danger signal on the irack in front of his engine, and no satisfactory explanation could then be given: but ti e division eiaminer predicted 'ihat he Tcn'd. probably be found color blind, and on hia examination thi3 proved to be the caia.
