HAEF.ISOX .t .OCKLAY AT Til C ORAND. A fair sized and appreciative audience laughed for wo hoars and a half at that superlatively absurd affair termed "3kippe ! by the Light o! the Moon," ai proincei by those popular comedians, Louis Harrison and John Gourlay, at the Grand Opera House last night. To attempt to describe the plot, or give a detailed rehearsal of the play would be but a waste of space. We could neither do jistice to the authors of "Skipped," or to those who contemplate seeing it. We heard many of the audience, as they pissed out, say "Funny, fanny, very very funny," but summing all these up, w can not find enough letters in the phrase to express ocr satisfaction. We waul! call it it ihe jolliest of torn f 3lery, and net not feel satisfied that we hid adequately de Ecribed its laughter provoking eleannt3 Louis Harrison is one of thine natu' comsdians wh?se erry art i ladicron, ani whose movements eeem to have hu mir tid all around theui. A! " Felix Crackle" be is all that is In any manner comical, and as long as be is on the etae;e so long in h audience convulsed with laughter. "This nit? as well be truly said of his farcical colleague. John Gonrlay, even though Goarlay U ea lirely different in his methods, and a mar enjoyable though totally dissimilar psir has net jet been discovered. The coterie of artists that support these characters is one worthy of a fail share of the prai;e bestowed on the former. Without exceptio, taking only into considera:in th mirth-provoking and 1 tnghter-prodacin situations, without regard to literary wotn. this may be said to ba the most lanhiblo, we might more properly say ei Je splitting play we have ever seen in miny seasons, and the amusement seekera who fail to se "Skipped by the Light of th Aloon" will miss more fan than they will b? able to derive from any other source in a long ti ne. It will run tbe remainder of the week, with the usual Saturday matinea. VmUGG.s' LAKPISG' AT ENGLISH. The initial performance of "ilcug'a La.il icg" was given to a large and aopreciative andience at English's Opera House hut night. The play, to use a favorite ex ore i sion of McDowell, who personates "Aa Beck." the land a;ent, is "away up," aud the interest Is maintained from the shipwreck scene in tbe prologue until the cloie, when the rights cf Littls Muzgs" are fall? sustained. Miss Frances Bishop as "Little Mogps" was most successful, aud secured, as the deserved, the hearty compliments of the audience. The impr eccat'on cf the character is not overdrawn, as is cften the case, and in this U its pri aet merit. Overflowing with buoyant spiiits that can not be repressed, the brilliant vcurg actress was forgotten, so thoroughly did she personate "Little Mugs." Tne dran a ba? the meiitot beinj pure, ciev and f levaiinp; affording opportunity tor the introduction of bright eongs aaddms'S Miss Biihou has a brillaint future before her. Alf McDowell as "Asa Back," tha Land Agent, is one of the sacceisful comedians ot the day, with an established re pi tation that should always secure for him a cordial welcome. The support wai excethut. "Mnggs' Landing" will be presented f jr threiuamder of the week, with a grinl matinee Saturday, at which the s?ats hi if been put at twenty-five cents, reserved, a'l parls of the hocse. LEGISLATIVE NOTES.
ThoIIouso Kef uses to Concur ia tho Senate Amendment Fixing tbe Bond of the Treasurer of State at $500,000. The Investigation Into the Knightstown Home to Proceed at Once. The Effects of Narcotics Not to Taught m the Public Schools. be The two Hmv.s will meet in joint convention on Mondy at 2 o'c'ork to elect Stte Librarian and oiher officers nominate 3 sometime ago. The Senate Coamit'ee y?5t ?rdy r jpr-reJ favorably on the Mrs. Edvin May claim for $10,000 for service of her deceased hajbnd, and that ttc money bs tiken from the S:atahouse fund. Some thirty Senators yesterday presented petitions from the people praying Lor the passage of tbe bill reqairing the effects of alcohol on tbe human system to be taught m the public schools. In the House yesterday morning an ineffectual effort was made to reconsider ths Eley bill, reducing the pay of Coroners from 10 to ?G per day, in order to so amend the bill that its provisions would not apply to cities of 40,000 inhabitants. SThs Robinson b'll to repsal the law psrmittirg aliens to hold titles to real eat . te came up a3 the ipec'a1 order in the House 3 esterday morning, and was discussed at lene h. the bill was finally passed by a vote of CS to 15, and the Senate bill on the same subjtct was recommitted for amendment. Tl e ihort-hanl reporters are considerably exercised over the bill which reduces the pay of stenographic court reporters from $7 50 to ?3 per day, Tney c'aim lht short hand reporter are not made in a day, but in order to ao the work required in conrt a long experience is necessary, and besides they neyer have reenlar empleyment. The attempt to relieve cjrta'n Township Trustee 8 of this county from the consequences of Ioes by the late bank fallarej is stirring up the people, and remonstrances are being circuited in two or three townships. A remonstrance from citizens of Decatur Township was presented jesterday in ths Samte, and others from various parts of the county are promised. In his argument on the State Treasurer's a flair s day before yesterday, Mr. Foulke stid that Cooper had obtained $'JO,0)0 from the Meridian National Bink on the Indorsement of Hon. Franklin Landers. Yesterday Mr Lsnders accomraiied ths Senator to ti bank, and in the presenc3 ot the ofiisers ensured him that the statement referred to above was not true. Mr. Patton, tho Representative from Sillivan, took offence at an article in the Journal yesterday morning, and when h? met the offending reporter In the lobby of tbe Höuee, be proceeded to pall tin" re porter's cars and apply his foot to tue s-t of the reporter's breeches. Friends intr. fered, and the combaUnts were siparalel before any serious damage was sustained by i'bfr. The House bill increasing the State Treasurers bond to $1,000,090 was reported from the Senate vestsrday, that body having ia?sed a i amendment making the psnalty 500.000. Mr. Harrell thought the pea i!ty should stand as fixed by the House, not tl at the present Treasurer is not honest, or th-it ttere is any dangerof hi3 running away, bat because as a general thin? the principle is right, end obtiins in all cases of County Treasurers. After toxe further dissusiion the question was put and tne House refilled to concur in the Senate resolution by a vote cf 47 to 3S. As soon ai the v.)te wjj announced the result was conveyed to the Senate, and a Conference Committee, c msitting of Representatives Eley aid Twineham wr.s appointed. The Special Committee appointed to in vestigate the Knlghtstown Home returned yesterday, having taken some important testimony at the institution daring their brief visit. Tne committee hsld a conference at the Grand last night and decided to return to Knightstown tb's afternoon for the purpose of taking further testimony. No formal charges have yet been submitted, and the parties to the controversy were informed last night that unless specific charts eie filed with the committee by 1 o'clo;fc this afternoon, tbe committee woü'd formlate charges of its o7n and procsed with the investigation. It is understood that tue charges to re formulated by the committee, in the absence of spesifio charges by tbe partie?, are to be based upon evidence already taken at the Hoaje which, rumor has it, is very damaging and conclusive. The committee appears determined to probe the matter to the bottom. For the bill requiring the teaching of phys iology and hygiene in the public s;h ols, with particular reference to the effects of al-rc-'-1 tobacco upon the human system, Mr. Gooding has proposed a substitute which limits the teaching to alcohol and tobacco, he objecting to the word "narcotics" as given in the first bill. Tne eubititute alio provides that new books need not be purchased, provided those in use treat these subjects sufheitntly; also, that the teaching may be postponed at the option of ounty beards till books can bs procured at reasonable prices. Mr. Gooding contends that tne provisions as contained In the original bill throw open the way to jobs in the mater of furnishing books Mr. Williams moved ao amendment to the substitute in effect that infant baptism and foreordination should bs taught in the schools. The amendment w.i tabled. Mr. Gooding's motion to recommit was laid on the table and the bill was read a third time, but failed to pass for want of a constitutional majoiity, the vote being 43 to 42. The Department Horses. Some time ago the Chief of the Fire Department sent out postal cards to the several veterinary surgeons of the city, asking them to submit bids lor attending the department horses for the current year. Among others Dr. L. A. Greiner, 6r., and Dr. John Elliott submitted bids, the former for $140 and the latter for f 180. The Council approved Elliott's bid last Monday night, but it is safe to say they did not understand the facts in the case. Dr. Greiner is a man of large expeiiecce in his profession, bavins received a medal of honor from the French Government as a reward of merit, and having fervrd aa veterinary snrpeon.for five years in the Thirty-first Brigade New York Light Ar
tillery. He has been in th!s city for the pat eight years and has proved a ruccessfai piactltioner during this entire time. Dr. Greiner is a Democrat and Dr. Elliott is a Republican, but this is no reason why the people of the city should pay $40 more to the latter for taking care of the department hones. No one will doubt Mr. Greiner's capacity as a surgeon, and the Eoard of Aldermen should look carefully into this matter before they confirm the bid which p:a:tically robs the people of $10.
