CHAITER XXI. Th morning of the second day alter the tragedy at V'oodrol Hail was eet lot the loneral of Lina Wooiruf. 8he had been dressed in a white shroud acd placed in her narrow beda handsome casket early in the morning. Mr. Woodrnf arose and went down to the parlor, where lay the body of his second lore the wife who had so cruelly deceived him, bet whom he Lad loied and trusted; the woman who bad sought to tale his life that she might be free to marry the man she loved. An be gazwi on the cold, still, white face and thought of bow beautiful she had been, r d how toon she must decay, bis heart melted toward ber, and be stooped and iiued the marble-like forehead of her whom he jet loved in spite of her wickedness and crime Who would mourn her untimely (Testa? Who would kneel and pray for her wandering spirit, that Ood might receive it into His fold? The shutters were closed tightly, bat the room was lighted by wax andles, A year had not passed by since Liu Mason entered that parlor, leaning on tha arm of the master of Woodrnf H≪ a few short words said by tbe minister and they were pronounced husband and wife. The funeral was to be private, no one bnt tte immediate relatives being present. The body was to be taken to New York for banal, and in spite of his feeble health. Mr. Woodrnf resolved to accompany the remains to their last resting place. "Ilameber, dear papa, that you arw all I have, and if you do not take great care of yourself, jou will also be taken away from ice," said Meta, when he made known to her his intention. "I know, my child; yet I hare not the heart to allow her to be taken away from er home, without a friend to see that she is buried. No, my child, duty calls me; I must go." 'Ihen you will not refuse to alio me to accompany you. Do not say no, for I should be greatly worried about you until you returned." "You need have no fears for my welfare, ileta; I will take Jack with me. Do all you can to make Arthur comfortable; I fear he v not long for this world," he said, shaking ni head sadly. "I too, papa, fear the worst. Dr. Grey told me enly a few moments ago that he had little or no nope of his recovery." "Then, my darling, rememberhis kindness to me, his brotherly love and attention, and make his lt hours on earth a3 happy as possible. You once beard him tay, when yon were dif-guistd as Malam Iletd. that he loved you very dearly, and wanted you to become bis wife. You a. bo heard my answer. When all others believe yon gaUty of elorinp with someone, of deceiving me and j our friends, he it wai w ho believed in your Innocence." "I understand your meaning, dear papa, and if he lives I will do as you wish; for I do not dislike anyone who has been very kind in yon." Atter the funeral service ai over, the casket containing the body of the late mistress of Woodrnf Hall was placed in a hearse and conveyed to the station, where it was transferred to tbe train and was toon on it? way to New York, followed by Mr. Woodruf and his servant. Within two hours from the time they left the Hall, the casket bad be-n lowered into tbe grave. The niiniiterhedüald dust to dust, and ashes to ashes; tbe earth bad closed over the grave -ot the unfortunate woman, who would sin no more. The man she had so mercilessly sought to destroy knelt and prayed God to forgive her sins and receive her soul at last; the great tears coursing down bis cheeks moistening her new made grave. In another hour he was back at Woodrnf Hall, wh'.ch did not seem to bim much like the home it had been a few months before. He was not glad that Ulna was dead, yet he felt relieved at having the burden of her trial and imprisonment was necessary that Arthur's arm should be amputated just above the elbow. Accordingly two old and experienced surgeons were summoned to Woodruf Hall and performed the operation. The wounded man b( re it bravery. Next morning he hid a hign lever and Dr. Grey was worried over ilia nonditioc, for in case the fever could not re overcome the very worst might be expected. Everything about tie house was iniet and r o one bnt the doctor and nurses were allowed in the sick room. Oh the third day after the tragedy Arthur was delirious all day, calling loudly for Ieta, confessing hia great love for her and pleading with her to pity him, to forgive tbe wrong he had once done her father and be his wife. His white, olnched face told that the end was rear. All day long Meta remained by his bedside, while on the opposite side was Eugene, ever ready to do anythirg in his power to relieve the large, handsome man, whose life was slowly ebbing away. About f o'clock in the evening Arthur fell aleep and slept soundly until midnight, when he awoke and was conscious. God had allowed him to once more gaza upon the face of the woman whose gentle advice had led him back into the path cf righteousress when be was Etraying eo far away from it. He smiled sadly with the lips which in a few short moments would be closed forever, and spoke in a faint voice. "Meta, my guardian aagel, do you know how I love jou?" "Yes, Aithur, I know all," she answered, with tesrs in her eyes. "And do you love me in return, iry Meta?' "Not 83 Ttu, perhaps, would wish me to. Yet, when I tr.y I do love yu, I am not telling a falsehood," she replied. With one hand at his heart and the ether at bis .forehead, Eugene lHened in utter amazement at that which he had heard, for tie tad never thought of connecting Meta with Arthur, he being so many years her senior. What a fool he haa been not to ':bnk of this tx-foie. 'Tlunt God, ray darling! And you will be my wife?' Arthur asked eagerly. 'If Gcd epares your lite, I will." she replied. Bat Meta knew that Arthur would never be en7 better than be was. Dr. Grey did let tkat it was impossible for him to get well. Do you renlly thick I will die, Meta? lint there, you need not answer, for I read in yoar fac6 that which my short breath and weakness ought to tell me " "Try and ba content, Arthur. He knows what is best." "It is so card to die and leave behind that Tvhica is to lf ar to me. Why does God not spare me, that I might taste of tbe great happiness which was in store for me? I am not ready to die. Oh, my darÜDg! I can not leave you," he cried, throwing his arms around ber aa he leaned over him. "Do cot talk so, Arthur; yon are only gong on a little ahead of me. When God call rjt wt should be rady and willing to ea without a murmur. He wants you in His crown cf glcry; yea. He needs you to fill a vacancy. Trust Him and you will be bsppy." "I will try to do as my angel says. If I could call jou wife once, I think I could die laappy." I it j to Uänk vi things aicä axe impec-

ish able, nace your mind upon that which la before yon; noon the one in whoe presence you will sxm enter. Lt your last words be a p raj er for Him to receive your sou), and be will." "I try. my darling, yet I cm think of cotbicg but you, wbo. if I could live, would be my wife. Many long, lonely hours have I spent in my past life and now I am to be cut o2 from this life just as I am ready to stretch forth my hand to grasp happinea," be faid, his breathing becoming more difficult. "Dear Arthur, think not of these perishable things you leave behind you, bet of the home you ai going to, where there is no more sin nor sighing; where all is peace and joy." "Pray for me, my darling. Iam graving faint; kiss me farewell. I see my mother a ki8 forev " Arthur gasped for bieath. and thn his soul took its flight to the Ged who crave it. All .earthly trouble was ofi, ana l be:i87e his spirit was received into its new home with triumph. Whatever his sins in the past were, from the first day he had met Meta Woodruf heasa changed man; a man who bad tried to reform and had met with success. Would he meet the woman he bad once loved in his new home? Or had he entered a higher sphere than she had beon able to reach, hardened a3 ehe was with such black deeds? Meta leaned oer the dying man and kissed him jast as the last breath left him; then, kneeling by the bedside, prayed tkat the rout of tbe one who had just left its earthly home might bs received tn tha -o7 ing arms of his father and receive His oiesaing. How beaatiful she looked there on her tcees, with face upturned to Gxi and hand! clasp sd i grayer tor the one wht, had one s dese L . rather a great wrong. The scene be bad jast witnessed Md proven too much lor his weary heart, nnd the great tears rolled dt wn his cheeks ai he raised his head at the sound of Mr. VVoodrui's voice. "Ccme, Eugene.be a man, and baar our Sfs bravely . He was one to boL tved by all who knew bim and will be mourned by many. But none feel tbe loss more deeply than my daueater end myself." Mr. Woodrnf little thought that Eugene wa not grieving lor Arthur, bat ot his daagater, whom Eugens now fait sure was ost to bim forever Arthur's sister, his only near relative, hid been sent for the day be ore, bnt owing to sickness in ber own family, did cot arri 'b till after bis dea'h. Poor woman; hei grief at tbe loss of her only brother was terrible to witness. We will leave ber alone with her husband and bei dead, and follow the master of the Üall, Mi daughter and Enpene, down to the libra'y. Mr. Woodruf is almost well again, and even though a dark cloud overhangt ois . y.be haa all hope of it clearing awav: men tee sun will pour its rays o" bappmets down upon him and his daughter. fCOXTIXUKD MOS DAT "Tbe Flerolneof Lonesome Hollow." Madison, Ind., Jan. 20 This county is the home of a "heroine," the like of which perhaps there is not another in the State. Nestled at the foot of a hill, about three miles above here, near "Lonesome Hollow," is a small cottage, where lives the widow and orphans of Peter Dekands, who died about two years ago. From the door of this house one can look and see the beautiful Ohio, as it flows on its downward course, while the Madison and Drcoksbnrg pike runs past tbe door. Here the father and husband of this household passed away to the other shore, leaving his wife and five children at home, and one or two grown up children abroad. The eldest child at home was Miss Luly, aged eighteen; and curios it may seem, yet she has rrom the day of her father's death to this been doing all the manual labor that is required around the farm, which consists of twelve acres, seven of which are under cultivation ; and not only does (be plow, reap and mow, but feeds the hcrss and milks the cow. Her mother, assisted by some of the younger children, attends to the household duties; but this is

too light for her. Such winter days as this, when farm work is scarce, she can b3 seen climbing the hills digging roots, which she carries home, and dnring these long evenings she will sit before the blazing fire, either drying them or beating the bark off. Only last week she pold $1 worth, which was a week's work. Nor is this heronlv avocation, but when the river is rising and carrying with it on its bosom driftwood, such as lops and fence rails, she can be seen at the edge of the water, book-pole in hand, waiting for a passing log, which she will plant her hook in, pull it ashore, and when she has a large pile will bitch her horse to it and drag it to the roadside above, where she saws and splits it and hauls it to town to convert into mcnev. Her example could be copied by a great many of our dudes and dudeens of the State with profit. Bhe looks none the worse for all this, but 1m a robust form, rosy cheeks and bright eye?, and although the thermometer Is almost down to zero, order a lead cf wood to-day, and she will haul it to town to morrow. She is indeed a woman amorg women.

The Dynamite Resolution. WAsnisGTON, Jan. 39 The House Committee on Foreign Affairs referred the dynamite resolution to a snt-ommittee. The opinion is generally expressed that no action ehould be taken on the subject by the House.

AX AGED BAPTIST MINISTER. Two More Important Cases Yonrasentbein? In Columbu, Ga., a few days ago, and meeting tbe venerable brother J. U, Campbell, we asked him for the news. Hi reply was: "I have two more Important cures edected by Swift's Specific to report" This venerable man is known far and wide tor his unremitting labors of love in behalf of the poor of Columbus. It will be remembered that the Swift Speciflc Co. has donated quite an amount of their famous medicine, to be distributed by Mr. Campbell among the poor of the city; hence his remark, lie said : "I have just seen a lady wbo has been greatly annoyed by a Tetter in one of her hands. It had civen her much trouble and pain. She said she Bad been treated by several physicians during the pa5t three or four years with the old remedies, out without giving any relief. I 6Ugeted Swift's Specific, and she too four bottles and is now apparently perfectly well. Iler hand is smooth and not a singe sign of the disease left. It is marvelous how this medicine renovates the system." 'What about the other case." "Well, that was a lady also. She had been affected with the eczema lor four years. Her lace, bands and arms, as well as ber body, was covered over with pores and scabs. It was one of the worst cases of this terrible disease that 1 have ever seen. The suCennj; of the poor creatura was beyond ex prerslrn. She tried every remedy at command, including mercury and Iodide of potash, but she only grew worte. Sue was in this condition when I fiif t saw the case. I soon had her taking Swift's Ppecißc, and she has now only taken two bo.tlep, but evtrv mark of tbe disease baa almost entirely disappeared. , Her strength and general hetltn have jfeaily improved. It Is one of the most remarkable cures that haa come under my Observation." Air. Campbell, yon have had a Ion? and varied experience in miuglinK with men and observlug their e mictions and the remedies used what is your opinion as to the merits of Swift's Specific1"' "In a ministry of sixty years I have mingled with every clds of focie'y, and Lave observed closely the variety of diseases which atllicr humanity. Blood diseases are tbe most numerous and the most difficult to remove. Tt is my deliberate judgment that Swift' steine is the grandest blood purifier ever - ere J. There is nothing comparable to It. 'j eis nothing too good to 6ay about Swift's Specific. " Tieatise on RIood and Skin Diseasss mailed free. The Swift Specific Co., Atiaa;a, Ga.
