In referring to one of the papers he eaid that, in his opinion, the man who had the ndacity to write it shoold be compelled to j-ign ir. One of the members of m committ then celled npon Dr. i:tman to eip-n the papers, which he did it h some reluctance, eayirj: that some tnar.jes might rave beeu made i a them rive they mere submitted. Dr. Kan man u aJj a ihort rt-wch t the committee, S17. jr? that in deposing him this Superintend em had been guüiy of nnjast dicrimina en e?ait a represetitue citizen and ixpayer. He Lad always labored in the ir.Urest of the City Hosfital ana nid endeavored rot to incur the enraitv of Mr "Wishard. He had felt tome time a'o that Dr. "Wishard intended to depose him, and I went to Mr. Newcoinb, of the Hospital Board, ard informed him of that fact. Superintendent Wishard at the conclusion of Dr. Eastman's remarks denied the charpes of discrimination, and railed npon Dr. Chambers, who was present, to testify 3 to the circumstances under which ha (Wishard) became a member of the clinical stafl. Ine Doctor stated that it was at hii snzjrtstlon that Wiahard wa3 made a member of the clinical stall. Assistant Superintendent Morrow was then called upon to make a statement as to tte number of lectures Riven at the hospital rach week. He said there were four each - week, and that Dr. Btilison, of the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons, had lectured tLere three times since the beginning of the year. The Superintendent then asked his assistant if he had instructed him and all treat the staff with courtesy at all times. "Yes, sir," was the answer. The witness was then asked what Dr. Eastman said about the sponees while performing an operation cn Caösie Heaver In April Ia3t. "Ti Doctor told his assistant to throw the spoDges in the nurse's face if th?y were either too wet or not warm enough," replied the witness in a ierky style. The Superintendent then asked tbe youn man if it wasn't true that all of the honss physicians were well pleased when Eistman's 1 er ni expired. He paid they were, and in act he dreaded the afternoon on which Festman visited the Institution, as did others. Eastman had a way about him that wa3 very unpleasant. This ecrap ot Dauer he Superintendent said had beea handed tocteoftbe nurses by Dr. Eastman. It tated that all nurses and attendants while tm duty in the City Hospital must wear Uppers with felt soles after Apiil 10, ISSt, Ld the sentence "three years a nurse in a capital of 2,000 beds" appeared at the bottom, inclosed in brackets. Dr. Eastman then assed Miss Lemoiae, to whom the 1 aper bad been handed, if she did not realize t the tirxa he gave it to her that it was intended as a jcke. The lady answered in the r'sative. ExCcroner Maxwell was present, aad aid that he bad never known Dr. Eastman 10 ba guilty of an act of discourtesy. He uiu uw. luiua luii ue saiu auyiuiuK vj insult the Superintendent while performing the operation on Cassie Beaver. He bad heard what Dr. Eastman raid about the sponges, but did not believe that he meant a word he said. He had always toticed that when Eastrzan was in attendance cpon an important case his whole mind was wrapped up in that cae and he hsd no thought lor anvthiDg else. Several other fhysicians testified to the same fact. In answer to a question Superintendent Wishard said that a pay patient bad never fceen refused admission to the City Has pit! "Will yon allow me to bring a patient to the hospital to-morrow?" aiked Dr. Eastrxac. "Yes, if I am relieved of the necessitv of rendering you any professional assistance," was tbe reply. It is but just to say that the beauty of the ladies was particularly prominent, as it seldom hampers that so many handsome ladies are collected together in one assemblage. There are seventy stations on the Indianapolis and St, Louis II a 1 between this city acd St. Louis nearly half of which are in Illinois. According to Boed-r.asters there have been fewer broken rails on Indianapolis roads this winter than during any winter in the last live or six years. A land agent says there is every indication that emigrant ttavel to the far West and Northwest will be unusually heavy during the coming spring and summer. The large portion of this business, he savs, will come from Indiana. Ail of the local land egents are receiving inquiries from various parts of the State with regard to rates, and the price of land along the line of their reads. Many of the Northwestern Lines are beginning to send out circulars giving a description of the country through which they pass. T see by the newspapers that several of the most important lines in the East are preparing to adopt the locomotive electris headlight for permanent use. Thus spoke an engineer oa one of the Indianapolis roads yesterday afternoon, as h examined the various parts of his enins in a critical manner while the machine" so J polling and snorting on one of the side tra-k? near the depot. "There is a time coming however, when people will not consider a locomotive well equipped unless it has an electric headlight, and engineers generali? will hail the day with joy, as will also the traveling public" The east-bound rates went into eTect yesterday, and there is every indication that they will be well maintained by all roaij. At Isst accounts Terre Haute Roads were stiil fcauiins freights on a twenty-cent basis al:bo;h they a-e liable to receive in structiüa; to alrauc rat:s at any momsnt.
A freight agent in answer to a question yesterday said that the railroads realized some little profit by carrying fieight at the twedy-cent rate, but not near enough to satisfy tbem, the cost of handling being f bent fifteen cents, while there is three Ctnts lighterage to pay at New York. The taking up of the third rail cn the Er!o would have been done several years go but for the fact that the locomotives of the road were built on the broad eaae model, and it was Impossible ti rebuild them to fit the
Standard gauge. Therefore it wa determined to use the third rail until the encin? 3, about forty in number, were used up by vrar.
