At the Meridian Rink Last Night a Grand Sncceee. Last evening was the time set for the calico party at the Meridian Rink. The housa &s decorated with Japanese fans, parasols, 'anterns and Macs, and presjnted a most inviting appearance. Tim Moor was in excellent condition, and all who were la costume enjoyed themselves in a most satisfactory manner. Those who attended as spectators were delighted with this rare opportunity of bero'dirj; more genuine beauty wrapped In calico than the most fanciful imagination would ever picture. When silk, tatln or velvet drerees are ordered, stvb and tit are the main features considered; bat, in this instance, elegance was entirely foreign to the occasion, the all important Questions being: "What can I wear?" "What will suit my natural (?) complexion?" "Will blue be tco trying?" (aite a number of the C3lic: ( ?) dresses wtre evidently designed by a faäalonable modiste, and we venture the conjecture that the liege lords of a fortunate few were so generous as to command the dresser to adorn tis better-half with the caljco robes that he had given order for. The wretch who recently eaii. when reftrrin to a handeoine lady oa Me.idian stre ct, "It's morey that make.i her lovely," locked in for a fflw niinntt-s last n'gut on the happy thronp, and tuen betook himelf 10 seme" debited spot where he muat reflan and conscientiously rep?nt the injmticaho had done the air sex by the utterance of finch an outrageous expression. At U o'clock the graud march was announced, which Frank Murphy and partner immediately placed themselves in position to lead. About forty couples took part in this feature of the evening. At the conclusion of the march th9 musicians curled themselves up comfortably on tbeir chairs, evidently prepared for the usual intermission of twenty or thirty minutes; but 09 the stockholders of the rink were in readiness to dance off their exhibition the horn manipulators (noise dispensers) in the corner were, after considerable coning, induced to toot a little to keep up thecourepe of the dignitariea as they Gracefully ( ?) glided over the glassy surface. Theo. Plaill n was heard to pay to his partner, as tbey bteadily ( ?) rounded the "home-tnrn": "How they cheer and laugh in glee! What bright words of repartee are said as if to guy us!" While the spectators thought: L'gbt as fet on velvet dancing fall Iba skates eo gayly prancing as they friskily Mit by us. The exhibition referred to above was a contest between the stockholders for a hand tome gold (?) medal, which had been ordered for the cccason. When Mr. I'fafllin discovered that ladies had bsen selected by Manager Hurry to act as judges his countenance lif hUd up, and he was beard to say: "If my graceful skating do?s not put rue in favor with them my winning railcs will." We are of the opinion ihat his winning ways were of no cons? que nee to the fire proof, dignified four, bat his superiority ns a skatorial artist over hU ccmpstitcrs they were in duty bound to recognize, so without even a ecor! ballot b was awarded ths prize. Particulars cf the Fre at the Insane Hoplta). Loee, 685,000, with no Ineurance How the Fire Originated Inadequate Supply of Water. The Sentinel of yesterday contained a brief account of a fire in progress at the State Hospital for the Insne, at the time of. going to press. The amount was as full as wss possible to make it, owing to the fact that everything was in canfusion and it wa3 impossible to give detiils until the fire was under control. This coaid not be accomplished until after daylieht, and, although the fire was nearly entirely extinguished at that time, the Fire Depi-t-ment contiLued to work oa iha wreck u itil 10 o'clock in the morning. OKIUlN OK T II a UBS The fire was the mot disastrous which h.s yet occurred at the Ho'pitat. It l3an in the boiler room, which is locate! in the double L building in the rear ot the miln building. This is where the fire occurred two weeks ag-, and Superintendent Fletcher and the other employes have be?n very anxious lest the fire should again break out in this part of the institution. The building is three stories high bseides the basement and is separated froai the main bailding, in wQ'ch are the wardi containing the patients, by heavy walls. I i this are located the engine room, bMler room, store room, laundry, bakery, kitchen and chapel. In the center of it rises the smokestack, 176 feet high. Just how the tire caught could not oe determine J, bat wheo Superintendent Fletcher heard the hurried walkirg of the employee about 2 o'clock he hastily dret::d bimstlf and wmt out to see what was the cause, having h prcser.tin ent tha it wes the dreaded fire. The erxell cf smoke was strong in tbe pesf'aee leading back from the dining room, but it was not until the engine room was reached that the fire wa3 discovered. The fight against the riitnes began at once, and lw hand grenades were soon broken over the fire, almost entirely quelling it, but when theee were gone the flames we re obEerved working on the Moor immediately above this part of the building, aud it was with sinking hearts that those present felt all hope of saving the block was past. For nearly half an hour the fight had continued and every one had forgotten to eeud in an alarm to the city. Finally when this was thought of it was net properly sounded, and the result was that the bells clashed and struck in the wildest and most uncertain manner, so that it was some minutes before the fire conld be located. However, Cnief Webster had beaa notified by telephone previous to the soundiDg of the alarm, aud ilieady had two engines on the road. As srou as the alarm was sounded two more companies responded, and these, with the File Chief in his light wagon, were all oa a gallop for the scene of the conflagration. AS UNEQUAL FPJHT waa kept up almost all the time by those who aided in subduing tbe tire. He hand grenades were good eo far a tüey went, but it was found impossible to fight a fire which was already playing along uoderneath the flooring with these small ext nguishers. When tbe engines first arrived taey betran in a manner which promised to c-tck tho fiames where they were found, tmt. the water gave out, aud by the time ihy were again ready to work, it was fo mi ceretsery to tight the lire from the chapf. 1 Lis cor. Id then only be reached by ladders, id d the ladder wngoa had not yet arrived. When tho first cistern gave out toe tire boys ffpptd tfck from tbe entrance where !hc-v he 1 been at work on the chapel whe: 'he rocf came crashing down, aud with it a .'orty-fcot beam, which struck end f-.renion ':ror ibe very spot where ths brave tire. Oihers may require but ittle work to make them as good ai new The cooking for employes and patients is icg done in g3 stove?, and the work of re airing tte boilers, steam pipes, etc., is aleady going on. The want of water at the asylum is now lt to be the cause of mot of the loss, ai, with a proper cpply, the fismes could have een checked in the boiler room and the ioor above. The wonder is that the loss has not been heavier. The well was originally intended to have been eighty feet deep, but for some reason it was dag only 3fty-fivefeeL Tbe tevtn cisterns about the ouildicg havirg a capacity of 2,000 barrels, nd three of there were u?ed by the en jir.es, but for which the destruction would have been greater. It is now being thought idvüable to have a twelve-inch water main 'aid from the city. This will cost SiVOiW ind part of the cost of the work, if it is tor e, will be paid by citizens along tbe line of the read, who will thus be provided with prctc clion against tire themselves. Tbe inmates of Eome ;ot the wards ere considerably agitated, and t was feared for a time that trouble would ensue with them. Occasionlly one would be found who would shriek in a manner calculated to freeze the listner' a blood. A few escaped and ran eome distance from the building, tat they were afterward rttnrncd to the ward, no: having suffered xcept from the cold. The laundry and kitchen girls were forced from their beds, as their rooms were included in the burnt diitrlct. The fire destroyed the clothing cf 4O0 I c ople, Vilich was in the laundry. Dr, Fletcher

The authorities gaTe an order frr l,f(0 loaves yesterday morning to met the immediate demands of the inuünti:n. At a late hour last evening everyV.drg was reported quiet at tte asy um, and considering the exciting time of the previous night everybody was getting' along very well. Temporary arrangements will be n ade for laundry and kitchen work, most of it being done at the old building. The management believes the cost of repairing the steam heating apparatus will be but small, ar.d can be accomplished In a dav or two so that it will be as good as ever. THE MILITARY CARNIVAL.
