"a nooroF gold" at teegrakd. The new English spectacular melo-drama, 1 A Hoop of Gold," was given its first repieEentatioa at the Grand Opera House last night before a large and appreciative audience, and judging from the almost CDntinuous applause and laughter, it made a most pronounced hit "A Hoop of Gold'' is by Mortimer Murdock, Esq , and like all successful plays of its characrr, has a spirited, smooth action and a rauLl Bucceasion of sensational incidents, it ras the whole gamut of emotione, and is especially strong in comedy. It compares favorably with the scenic melc-dramas of its class, snch a3 the 'Ilcmanv Rye" and '.Sdver King." 'A Hoop ci Gold" is a pathetic 6tory, and is abundantly .entertaining. The scenery is new and elegant, and the audience is carried through the p!f cs like one would be through an Interesting novel. Some of the settings were especially elaborate and handsome and created much favorable comment. It was presented -by a capable company well balanced and strong all round. The perpon most noticed in the c&&t, both on account of the prominence of ber part, and the capable manner in which it Was rendered, without bsiug forcible in f.n extraordinary tenre, wis Miss Beatrice Lieb, who played the ro'.e of "Rath Bnllian." Mr, George Morton as -Richard Wrench" has an extremely difficult part to iiiHintain, which he does reaarkablv well. Others worthy of special mention are Scott Walters as "Doctor Hartland Walter Lennox, a most excellent comedian, as "Saumy Wetberwick," and Arthur Moulton, equatlj as gcod, as "iiermlon Scott;" Marcus Moriarty, the stage manager, as "PhiÜD Lep beck;" Jcsephine Laurens as "Mr3. Tester," and Ada Morton as ''Lizzie Lovcgrove.'' The scenery was brought by the company therctflves, and did much to aid a very taking and well-written piece. On one or two occsßiorts the cartaln was ran up several times in refponee to rounds of applause. There will be another perfcrmanc3 to-night, tn-rccrrow a'temcori and to-morrow niht "Hccp cf Gold" is well worth seeing, aud any one attending either of tte perforraanc1will be smply repaid. The low price3of fidmiicn continue to be a feature at Vih house. English's opkiia house. Mr. Emr.d as 'Monozoack" acted hnd taDß: gracefully and with spirit, as also Mr. J. E. Ccnly to "Mascquin." Mr. EJ CupHji.n, who makps np as a comedian hatho lacks as a singer, brought down the houe by his "gflgs" and comedy.
