PciViti' Citizens, A j a ci at fal people ever mindful of the past, we h-vc assembled ,urs 1 es tog', ther for the purpose if celebrating the natal d ty that gave hinh to our National Independence. I'orty four times has the revolvii g earth rolled her ample cireut round, since that era was udu ied 10 that we now celebrate. On th.it d iv the milLnium of liberty made itv appe ar mee to the struggling so:;3 o )f Am ru . und opened to their view, the vi.-douarv track, that ltd toth.-ir future glorious deeds and rrwirH. A ihclarali-iU which had never before shone on the historic page, or tumped its ilat on the annuls of time. One that afforded a new subject for the orator, a new theme for the hard, and a symbol tii at rising generation mi ght admire. Hut before we proceed further into this elaborate subject, let us t ile a precuisorv view of the deedi and eventb that led to this ever memorable t-po'Ai. The fr.t thing that arrests our attention i a voung and unprotected colony i people, who had fie', from thc land ot opprr-slon, and planted themselves in a distant reion, v here the v expected to enjov all thiir civil iichts and inm)unitie, in peace a id harruonv. Stdl were thrv pursued bv the voracious hand of ravine, who flocked to their t oantre's bmnd threatning desolation like a fell plague of destruction. Insult follow id insult, and cruelty 5 jccved' d cruelty. Thus were they driven from one extremity to another, their rights and liberties subverted, thtir country stript of its productions, tdl they were forced at Uil by CCOiUSt liSl Iaciwaiin- ex
pression, tc seek protection in the open fteld a battle. A new scne had now presented itself to viev, and the bloodstained
field was soon to mark the stage of action. The thronged legions of his royal subjects were still seen flocking forth planting their implements and machines of war and death along the pcrturbated coast. The lowering cloud of war was still gathering pregnant with the awful tornado, threatning shortly to rive its dread arsenals, and discharge the bloody torrents of its fatal matter, whilst the howling spirits ot tlie storm, seemed hovering round to gaze on the terrific scene! The victim of sacrifice was nov hound on the alter of Mars, and the loud clarion of war sounded its shrill voice from land to land. The evenging sword was drawn, the eventful crisis arrived and the guiltlcssmartvTof Hbcrtv, was led forth to expiate for d.cis he hael nevtr clone. Great was the signal act Columbia's chosen -sons had to perform, but few were the votaries of their ause. Small was the number cf those contending for liberty, but great the multitude of those that sought to enslave their country. Nor were the peitidious crew contented with their own superiority of numbers, thtir own rapacities, hut a'lured to their assistance the uncultivated African, and the merciless savage to participate in their plunders, and imbrue their polluted hands, in the blood of th innocent. 'Great God, v.jwu thee my oA appal, And whi-per B iu:n, tUou must surely full!"' Thus the anno) ed inhabitant; of the disputed soil not only had to Contend with an ungrateful loe, with an enemv inured to am.j from their infancy, and educated in tne field of battle, but also with the ruthless savage of the wilda, with the midnight warrior ed the woods. Ln:U d by the s acred bands of unanimitv, e see them marching forw ard un that ever memorable rra of seventy six, ever sacred and long to be reverrd by the sons ol liberty, declaring themselv es a free people, no longer dependent on the treacherous povvt rs of Britain ior prottetion. pangs ot fallen greatness living in the hardened ligaments of his soul. Jaring kingdoms skook, and tottering empire s quaking from their foundations, felt and confessed the convulsing wreck. Then the jubilee of freedom was spteading its ambctan sound from region to region, and all the shout
ing choir appeared responsive to tne summons. Then the dauntles a herald cf intrepidity, mounting over the hostage trophies and reeking Hecatombs, that were still bleeding at the altar of libtrtv, unbailed the American hag, and waved it triumphantly over the plains of tlv western world. Then the exulting t)and ot freehorn souls, Wv.re seer, rallying around the st rry banner, retolvcd to conquer or to the, and the only motto they bore, was "I.ibt rty or death." Kach zt-lot felt the vital p.ik Xiruhmg in his enraptured soul, and the descending breeze of heaven, fanned the spreading flame. Housd by the same cause, and united bv the same endearmtnts, thev refoivtd in front of an indignant world, by erne bold effort, toextiicate themst ives from the galling oke of oppression and tytanny, to burst thtir ignominious bonds and utters, and shield their rights and liberties, from the usurpations c f invading desp- t.-.. The heroic band cf noble souls, tired by trie spirits of those who had already paid the bloody tribute, to their countrv , were seen pressing around the devoted suet ifice chanting the anthems- f liberty, ami offeiingup ilivir oiiso's, that h.d already ascended on high, and reached the high portals of heaven. The. Godot vengeance, and king omnipotent, received their invocations, and all the powers above responding to their supplications, seemed to leply, America, thy suffering are complete, the victim bleeds, the atoning auuercr die, proud Albiau yields, it is finished amen! The ransomed souls now freed fiom slavery and despotism, with ecstatic transput is of bliss beaming in their cnruptuied bosoms, hailed the heavea-be.ru messer.ge r to t led the epenim: vi-ta to tiietowerinr buiiiiiiit tiieir i.ati- na! r ndeur. The tragic scene was now clcsed, the dawn of peice begati to diiTuse its smiles, and a garland of laurels was wreathing to deck the brow of the American victor. Tlie bloody act I bay was fully finished, the signets of peace were proclaimed, and the proud soldier was seen returning in triumph to the arms of his spouse, rime now seemed to nave rcmountea its wheels anew, all nature looked gay, and every heart throbbed withecstacy. A new age had now commenced its era, in America, and the hardy veteran who but a short time before, was seen wielding the weapons of defence, was now hurling the sturdy oak from its foundations, spreading his verdant plains and fertile fields, where once a howling foreit diffused its dismal glooms. Manufactories began to increase, commerce to flourish, and the extended sail was seen proudly riding on ths distant wave, to bear th2 welcome barter. Civilization and refinement were marking their progressive bounds, the arts and sciences began to exhibit their adornments, and the name of America was soaring her unbounded flight, on the pinions of fame. For thirty years the annual sun of peace, returned to "light up
the blushes of the morn," an3 cheer the varied season. The peaceful citizen basking in the solar beams of a prosperous sun, began to -conclude, the hour ! )t danger was past and could rc turn no more. But fate, thou incomprehensible harbinger of destinies! what hidden mysteries hast thou ' buried in thy inexplorable boson! Britain, perfidious Britain, long had been a silent spectator, and with an invidious eye was witnessing the unparalleled growth and prosperity of a people, that seemed coping with the universe, and preparing to rival and outstrip the combine! powers of the earth. She ob:erved their proceedings, and whilst with one hand, she held forth thc truce of friendship, with the other she was secretly planting the inridsa of throldom, But soon again, too soon ala3,, the hidden flame burst through the dark canopy of war, to light anew the belligerant torch. America was once more to be the theatre of the bloodv scene. Again the reposing citizen was roused from his lethargic lumbers, to shield himself wit! tiie buckler of defence, and wield the gauntlet of war. Again the trump of war was sounding, again the devastation spreading. Again thc bloody demon howling, again the herald of death stalking around and! marking out his devoted prey, nnd again the shrieks of the irV1 ant babe, 4nd the groans t the tortured mother, were t& break the silent stillness. Again the bereaved widow and the or. phan, were to be the sad spectators of the sight, and the Unhappy messengers of the doleful tidings. 1 he storm of war u now raging in all its hideout horrors; towns and towreta were tumbling from their ba..U; and the yawning vortex ot death, seemed but the certaiii. doom of all. If you wish proof'3 of this assertion, if you wish arj emblem of the scene, go viev the distant banks of the rolling Raisin, go gather the scattered fragments of the tortured, gu number the mouldering bonco of your countrymen, that nov lie bleaching in the hyperborean blasts as a token of their fall. This day the funeral Godes. decked in her sable garb, is cei. cbrating her rites oyer the enchanted spot, and the meager spectres of tlie departed souls, starting from their shades, arc this day rallying through thc dark regions of their abode, to gaze on your proceedings and are witnessing your celebration.
