The board are happy to be able to state that wherever they have sent the Sacred Volu-.e, whether as a donation or in return for funds remitted to them, it has been received with thankfulness; and the Auxiliaries, tar from being divided from each other, or
from the Parent Institution by any local jealousy, seem to Tie with each other in hailing the prosperity of the American bible society as a token for good to the
whole land. The time has now come when they can reap every expected advantage from the relation thev have so fondly cheirished. The ability of the Parent Institution U such that it can meet the demand of its present Auxiliaries promptly and fuliy. The Board would not finish this part of their Report without mentioning the loss hich the society has sustained in the death of Mr. John E. Caldwell, the late Agent. He had fulfilled the duties ot that oilieefor more than a year before his death, and his fidelity and ability in the dis. charge ot them were obvious to every observer. It pleased God to remove him from this world on the 9th ot March last. At a meeting of the board, on the 5th of the following month, John Nitchie, esq. was appointed hi successor. During the interval, the duties of the office were tuU'iU led by Mr. William Coecil Wool, se) His services on the occasion wcrcgriiuuously rendered, and saved the Ixurvl from much embarrassment and inconvenience. Dunng the pt year the num. br of Auxiliaries to the society lias oeen increacrd bv the .cession 4 ot the following bible s-octtitr. Making the whole nu pjr of Auxiliaries, n r.v oILLuy known aiid recognised, to be One Hundred and Ninety four. Several sx:ietics having expressed a wish to be recognise 1 as Auxiliaries, while at the same time they appropriate part ot their funds to otiier objects besides "encouraging a wider circulation or the scriptures without note or comment," the Board hae thought it necessary to publish the following intimation, which, because of its importance, they embody in their present report, "As some Bible institutions, having professedly other objects in addition to that of promoting the diffusion of the sacred scriptures, have recently declared themselves auxiliary to ths American bibie society, evidently under an incorrect impression of the piinciples upon which they could be admitted as such; and as others in distant places may in like manner he formed under the same mistaken views, the board of managers dctm it advisable publicly to make tncvvu, tiat
by the first article of the constitution of the A.nerican bible sociev ty, it s declared that it Sole object shall le to encouiage a wider circulation of the holy scripui es, without note or comment,' and that conformably to the third article of the sinie constuu ion, the privileges of an 4u.tiii.t1- -can be granted to such soa-ue only as agree to pi ice their surplus revenue, after supplying thv'ir own distrcts with bibles, at the disposal of this society.' Thee bong fundamental principles, a ad considered of vital importance to t'15 National Society, the mi .irrj deem them essentially necLv;arj? to form the basis of that connexion by which other biDle ocie:iet can be associated with it n the tooting of Auxiliaries, and be enV titled to tiie privileges ariin from that connexion. The managers, therfore, think? it proper to state, that no so shall be considered as haviu ; occome auxiliary until it shah a ive ollicuily communicated to thi? board, that its sole object i o promote the circulation ot ihe holy scriptures without note or comment, and that it wii. .iaco its surplus revenue, aftei supp'y ing its own district with the sciptuivS, at the disposal of the amcrican bible society, as lone as it shall rcrr.;;a thua connected with ik.. The rcasonblcne and nrccssity oi this regulation, it is ro be hoped, will be universally admlnr ted. Being much Impressed witla. the importance of adding to the numbers, and animating 0- ef foTs of auxiliary institution-, 'he board have been frequently ; u pied with the u'j-ict dm : . , -no past year. Alrhcv.i'h the present auxidaries are very rcspeoibld both as to numbers and z A vet there arc extensive and weathy portions of our country in which no attempt has hitherto been made to organise and establish either auxiliary societies, or bible? associations. The board do not believe that this arises from in difference to the cause, but that much would soon be done if the? attention of christians in such places was earnestly and respectfully called to the importance of t!i: o ject. With this view, the boaicj have resolved Fhat there be annnally ap pointed at the first meeting cf '.aer managers, after the animal meeting of the society, a committee of five person,, to be called T11& Auxiliary Society Committee whose dutv it bhall be '.o devise and suggest to the Boircf
