POETRY.
Jtoiii the Pittsburgh Gazette. PARODY 7c Mariners cf England? Ye gentlemen and ladies, Who live at home at ease, In rural quiet snugly fix'd, Among the pigs and fleas ; Give ear to a director, And he will plainly show, What dismay rules the day, When stock is getting low. When Congress sends committees, To fumble o'er our books ; You'd think ten thousand pitics, To see our piteous looks ; The President and Cashier Depressed with care and wee, Hop labour, in and out, While the stock is getting low. Or if some members bolder, Do threaten and denounce ; And on eich poor stockholder, Arc ready down to pounce ; Then shivering s.gucs seize us, Rheumatic pains shoot thro The aching bones of Billy J s, For the stock is getting low. Each chcck-bcok, ledger, journal, Is now thrown open wide ; And the balance sheet diurnal, Is in the balance tried ; The tellers, runners, watchmen, Are capp ing to and fro, "While the clerk, with a jerk, Exclaims 4 the stock is low.' But courage brave Directors ! And "never be dismay'd While we have cash cr credit left. We ne'er shall want a trade ; Our merchants will employ us, To raise the wind you know, Up we must kick a dust, Although the stock is low. Oo From the Genius cf ike Lakes. When we consider the few real enjoyments that mankind arc permitted to share in, it ought to eA'cite us to an emulation with each other in endeavoring to alleviate the gloomy feelings which zvz constant attendants on the minds of those who are obliged to face fhe storms and quicksands of a tempestuous and uncertain world. And who can say that he is at ail times without feelings strongly tinctured by, the dregs of a bitter cup ? Is it the man who is in the daily practice of laying up riches ! Ask .him if, with the piles of wealth which he hoards, there are not a few packages ot doubt, dread, twinges of conscience, and, what is worse than sll, a large quantum of horror in the thought of dying and leaving his earthly gods at the mercy of the spendthrift to attend the summons of him, who is to the poor and lowly a merciful God, but who appears to the insatible griper of the hard earnings of others, in a robe of vengeance. 4 Mow cruel must thy summons be Oh death, to iiirn that is at ease in his possessions i I have been led to the above reflections in consequence cf the very alarming appearance which the times present. The bar-rooms in the taverns of the place are covered with notices of Constables' sales the newspapers teem with accounts from die Sheriff of vendition exponas
writs, until the very peasant becomes familiar with the Latin term. And scarcely do you meet a countenance that is unclouded with care ; and, indeed, on some you may trace the lines of despondency. I am not sufficiently acquainted with the cause which has produced such lamentable effects, to enable me to prescribe an efficacious remedy for the evil. I only know that calamity does exist, and think that if milder means were pursued by the creditor, he would obtain his money from the debtor with much more gratifying sensations than he can feel in tearing the means of existence from the mouths of an affectionate wife and starving offspring. I will conclude these remarks with two lines from a very favorite poet, who was (if ever man was) possessed or a heart Hlled with ' the milk of human kindness. c Man's inhumanity to man Makes countless thousands mourn.' HOLLO WARD.
A sailor who had just returned from sea, and had received his pay, was met by a highwayman who ordered him to deliver up the money he had, or he would blow his brains out. The sailor, after turning the cud of tobacco in his mouth and hesitating a moment, exclaimed, Blozo and be d J9 Sir it is better these times to be witkiut brains than without money' When the Hon. Mr. Clay was somewhat unpopular with the people of his district for favoring the famous compensation bill, the lion. Mr. Pope, who has had the misfortune to loss an arm, was run in opposition to him. During the electioneering campaign, Mr. Clay, in a playful manner, asked an Irishman which candidate he intended to vote for. The votary of St. Patrick immediately, replied 4 And faith Mr. Clay, I think as how I shall vote for the man who can get but one arm into the treasury." .). G.
