Tin. 2?. fl in defence of his Report on the subject of the Seminole war, and finished his speech yesterday. He exhibited great research and ability in the discharge of his dutv. His argunient was replete 'with authority anj evidence, interspersed W;th the most bold and animated flights of eloquence. The colonel, in compliance with tae request of the Ladies, who crowded the galleries, left his usual place in the house and occupied a position more favorable to their observation. " The manner in which he acquitted himself on this occain, has added to thc high elevation that he has so long held in the esteem and affections of his friends and acquaintances. His appearance naturally commanding when ardent iu debate, was rendered more deeply interesting from beholding those honored scars in that hand and arm, which had so essentially contributad to prostrate our combined eneanl to cause our banner to wave in triumph, on the banks of the Thames." Monte Video, Dec. 4. The English sloop of war Icarus, from Buenos Ayrcs for Rio de Janeiro, touched here this afternoon. An officer on board has politely favored me with the enclosed translated

ish frigate Maria Isabel, of 50 Kuns, destined for Chili. The Maria Isabel was captured in the port of Talcahuana by admiral Blanco on the 28th October. Finish of the Spanish expedition t the Pacific. Despatch from the admiral of the Chili squadron, dated on board the Gen. San Martin f4t at anchor in Valparaiso harbor, on the 17th November, iSiS. This moment, say 1 1 o'clock, a. m. I have anchored in this port with the squadron under my command, and prizes the Spanish frigate Maria Isabel of 53 guns, and three transports ot thc convoy under her care, which took on board in Cadiz 606 men and 36 officers 213 of the first have died on the passage, and 277 are sick ; the remainder are well, but perishing of want. The transports arc the Dolores, Magdalena, and Elena, taken on the nth, 12th and 14th inst.in the port of the island of Santa Maria, which they entered, t.iking us for companions, as on their heaving in fright we hoisted Spanish colors, and the. Maria Isabel signalised for their number, which they immediately gave and anchored alongside of us, when we gave them a shot and hoisted national colors. The brig of war S alvarino, which had arrived the day before, I was obliged to detain for want of hands to man the prizes, and I gave the first into his charge. The second I gave to the brig of war Intrepida CElas Provincial Unidas del Rio de la Plata, which joined me on the 1 2th, and the third I manned from thc 64. On thc 14th, at S p. m. I left Santa Maria : next morning fell in with the sloop of war Chacubuco, which I ordered to the island to wait for the remaining transports till the 30th, should they not arrive before. I very much suspect thc j have either put into some port on the coast or have foundered, if I may infer from the state in which I have found the three which I have the honor of placing at your excellency's disposal. God preserve your excellency many years. (Signed) Manuel BlancoyEucalada. To his Excellency the Minister cf Alar ine. N5W.YORK, MARCH 6 Commodore Aurfs Squadron hst. NEW OR L LANS, JAN.. I. If in this city there be really a want of specie and if in consequence ot that want the interests of commerce have suffered, (both positions by the bye we think very questionable; we may think the numerous picaroons and pirates that swarm in the Gulph of Mexico, from whose depredations no vessel is sate, under whatever flag she may sail, provided she have money on board. We are informed by persons whose authority cannot be questioned, that upwards of a million of dollars would have been shipped for New Orleans alone, during the last summer and autumn, from Carthagena. Tarnpico, and other ports on the Maine, for the purchase of British, French and India goods, if the Spanish merchants had not been deterred from trusting their property at sea by the fear of falling into thehindsof those buccaneers.
