, THE MANIAC'S SONG. 'from the Pittsburgh Gazette. Gently flow, the swelling billows ; O'er my Edwin's ocean bed, Soft the azure wave that pillows, On its breast, my lover's head; , The Syren's songs, v His sleep prolongs, Jlis bridal coach the sea nymphs spread, Softly breathe, ye sighing gales, Lightly o'er his death bed sweeps; Hark! the mermatd'o song he. wails, See, around him Naiads weep ; They've made his grave, In ocean's cave, And there. I'M to his bosom creep ! And see my Edwin spread his arms,
Ana cries, "y thee here; 3Ierc, sweet, shall cease fond loves alarms, ;Can Ellen ' aught' with Edwin . fear ? Together blest, We'll sweetly rest. Oh haste my bride, my Ellen, dear." With wildercdvgaze and throb- ' bing breast, She sigh'd " my love to thee I go" Then eager to the wild cliff prest, And plung'd into the flood below. By Edwin's side, Now sleeps his bride, fteleas'd from every earthly woe!

minutes, he was let down, and a woman suspended in the same manner. . Neither of these persons discovered the least signs of pain, but .seemed wholly at ease. When they were let ddwn, the multitude pressed round to touch them, as though some particular blessing or virtue was communicated. This painful ceremony was performed before a small temple, in consequence of certain vows voluntarily made by the persons who were thus tormented. The next day two other persons were suspended in the same way.'

Case of Seduction.- Exemplary damages. ..The case of , Waimsley vs. Mercer was trieH at the court of common pleas, which has just closed its session at JElkton Maryland, and the jury found a verdict of 6000 dollars damages. The case we understand was marked by circumstances of peculiar aggravation; the daughter of the plaintiff, a young girl of exemplary character, had been permit, ted by her parents upon the urgent importunity of the defendant, a man of more than three score, to become an inmate of his house (where the seduction occurred) as a companion for his daughter.. The defendant is a man in opuient circumstances; and such was the virtuous indignation of the jury, at a case so marked by depravity, and breach of hospitality, that some of them were disposed to extend the damages to 10,000 dollars. All, we believe, united in finding the sum abovementioned.

BEAUTIFUL LINES. From Campbell's Pleasures of Hope. Unfading Hope ! when life's last embers burn, When soul to soul and dust to dust return,
HORRIBLE SUPERSTITION. Extract of a letter from the Rev. Horatio Barowelly a Missionary frow the1' United States , dated Bombay, Feb. 8, 1818. ' A few weeks ago, I witnessed the swingjng of two persons, as it is called, suspended by hooks thrust through the fleshy part of the back. The machine consists of a perpendicular post about 1 2 feet high . At the top of this was a pivot that sustained a horizontal pole ; at one end of this the hooks were fastened, at the other end ropes were fixed to raise the hooks. The whole machine was placed on wneels. Just before , the first person was suspended, an old man girded with a belt strung with little bells, and deformed with numerous badges of. horrid superstition, seised a young kid that was presented to him, tore open the jugular veins with his teeth, and like a monster sucked the blood while the little animal was strugling in death. This sacrifice being made, a procession then formed and marched a num. ber of times round the car. They at length stopped, and a man about 30 years of age was quickly suspended on the hooks, and the car was then drawn by the people a number of times round the yard, attended by tomtoms and shoutings by the multitude. After being drawn around about ten
V E V A Y. AMONGST other objects marked by the progress of improvement on the borders of the Ohio, the TOWN OF VEVAY, (the delightful situation of which is already known, to travellers and the public generally) has progressed to that degree, that an enlargement of its original limits is not only demanded by the public voice, but now necessary, on account of the high price of lots originally sold the increase of business arising from the unparalleled, settlement ; and cultivation of its back country, and the establishment of a BANK, and other institutions connected with an active, commercial town. From the existence of these facts, the subscribers have been induced to lay off that beautiful portion of land intervening between the original town and the first vineyard, in connexion with the first plat of the town. The . situation of Vevay its present advantages and future prospects, require no arguments to convince the public of the correct views of the proprietors in bringing these lots into market. The above lots will be sold on a credit of 6, 12, and 18 months. Sale to take place on the premises, on Monday and Tuesday the 2d and 3d days of November next, where due attendance will be given by DANIEL DUFOUR & JOHN SHEETS, Proprietors.
