both to the state and city authorities, last Sunday held in a house in the suburbs of the city a large and awful assemblage of Free People of color, and slaves, as they had done before. This assembly was taken up by the city guard, and although every individual was liable, by law, both to imprisonment and corporeal chastisement, yet the penalty was mitigated and inflicted on only a few of the ring-leaders. From the N. T. Columbian. PROSPERITY OF OUR CITY. It is with pleasure we give insertion to the following facts. They point out in a manner that cannot but afford exultation, the future greatness of our city : Increase of New Tork this season. Mr. Spooner. It has been communicated to me by several gentlemen, who have obtained the fact by personal observation, that about two thousand buildings are going up in New Yorl: this season. The amount of capital which is and will be employed in their erection will be, by the nearest calculation, millions cf dollars. Who but must wonder at . the rapid growth of our great city ! Let this enterprise continue yJct her citizens return and exercise their present liberality, and she will not only hereafter become the London of the western world, but a greater than London herself. If the calculation which has been made, -with respect to the amount employed in erecting the buildings this season, be true it exceeds the great Western canal from the Hudson to the lakes, the estimates of the canal commissioners falling somewhat short of five millions . of dollars. What scenes of commercial grandeur opens upon us ! When the Hudson and the lakes shall be connected, we shall sec New York the emporium of trade that will employ the industry, not only of our own state, but of the whole country bordering on our great chain of island seas. New York now possesses about a hundred and twenty five thousand inhabitants. The extraordinary tax which wc pay this year, is two hundred and fifty thousand dollars a sum more than half enough so pay the annual interest of the whole fund for the great western as well as the northern canal! These facts & prospects are enough to make party spirit blush and hide her haggard visage. They are enough to direct our attention to these vast .objects of state and national improvement, "which are worthy to employ the attenti6n and command the efforts of agrea and enlightened people. A gentleman of veracity, lately arrived in this city from Edinburgh, (Scotland) says that the agents of the South American patriots recruit in an open manner for men, without interruption, and that they are musteied and rr-arcned through the streets fur embarkation at Leith; all this is done in the iac of day and undu Uie eye tfi the British authorities. Washington City Gazette,
From the New Tork Gazette. SPECIE. It is whispered, that the Erench sloop of war Eglanlantine, which anchored yesterday at our watering place, brought a very large sum in whole and half French crowns. We could have wished they had been real unadulterated Spaniards, being the more current medium of the present day, although rather too much above par. In twelve months hgncc, our banks can redeem their paper with specie, without a Spanish dollar in their vaults ; arid the Indians and Chinese must take French Crowns and American Eagles for their manufactures; or the striped bunting will no longer wave in their ports.
had suffered a defeat. They retreated and recruited then, collecting . their strength into one tremendous effort, relying upon the bayonet alone, crushed at a blow the whole royal army. - All the particulars ot ,this splendid triumph we have not received ; but enough is known to assure us of. its decisive character, -and to encourage the belief that : it is as certain the death b!ow;to the royal power, in Chili, as we hope it is the precurser of the speedy and total extinction of the Spanish power from the Isthmus to Cape Horn. We learn, through a private channel, . that Judge . Bland, one of our commissioners had set out from Buenos Ayres for Chili over land we presume ; of course it was not his intention to return in the Congress, if she left Rio de la Plate as early as the first of May at which tim;; it was expected she would, sail, lb.

We are authorised to state, that William W. Thom, is a candidate for coroner.
From South America. vThe ship Woodrop Sims arrived at Baltimore on Wednesday, in the short passage of 55 days, from Buenos Ayres. Capt. Jenkins states, that the United States' frigate Congress was to sail from that port about the first of May. The British brig Devcron, Wil. son, from Baltimore, had arrived. Business was dull and many vessels of all nations lying there. Several vessels from England were fitting out as cruizers. The brig Ariel, from Baltimore, had arrived from Valparaiso ; she was very near being taken by the Spanish frigate Vaganza, had she not been assisted by the boats of the United States sloop of war Ontario. Buenos Ayres was rejoicing in consequence of the splendid victory gained over the royalists in Chili,' which news reached Buenos Ayres a few days before the W. S. sailed. Upwards ' of 1000 cannon were fired on the occasion, and the city brilliantly illuminated for 3 nights. Captain Jenkins has brought papers detailing the particulars. 'J he Peruvian army, of 7000 men was totally destroyed ; all killed or wounded, and no resources left to raise anothei. The loss of. the patriots was considerable 1000 killed. Lima was doubtless in possession of the Chilian army. Nat. Intel. June 26. We have been favored with the use of a Buenos Ayres Gazette, received by the Wondrop Sims, arrived at Baltimore, from which wc copy the subjoined notice of the late splendid victory which has crowned the republican arms in Chili. From another source we learn, that thirteen days before the decisive battle the patriots
;from CHILI. ..Buenos Ayres y April, 19. Friday It is now 4 o'clock the air is filled with shouts of joy, the roar of cannon and the ringing of bells. We : have obtained a complete victory' in Chili. Fifteen hundred persons, all their artillery, their baggage, their general officers, a general called Ordenez, are in our hands the pledges of victory. The miserable remnant of an army, that a few hours since promised an early conquest cf Chili, now routed and fugitive seeks in vain for escape by flight. Our indefatigable cavalry are: in pursuit. The dead strew the field of battle ! The action listed six hours. It was at the point of the bayonet the true weapon for the soldiers of liberty tftat we have overthrown the enemy. Our Joss is inconsiderable compared with that of the Spaniards. We can easily realize if we reflect that immediately after the issue ot the battle, the vanquished experienced the greatest reverse in finding in their rear the rivers Maipo and Maule. How indeed can we conceive that an army, or rather the remnant of an annv in disorder, could repass those rivers ! Every moment more circumstantial details are received. It is necessary to see the whole community in clamor and congratulations j the streets thronged with citizens, who make the air ring with cries a thousand times repeated, i-iva apatria, to witness the delirium of joy that pervades ; to hear every one shouting and repeating " we are conquerors !" to form an idea of the general enthusiasm which this news has inspire.!. All eager to circulate the giad intelligence; thousands of rockets from every door and terrace, announce and celebrate our joy . At evening, a complete and spontaneous illumination prolongs the brilliant day, which forever consecrates upon an imperishable basis the Independence cf South America. Ferdinand trembles ! He learns that soon Lima will disburden herself of her oppressoisj and checked only by a feeble garrison, will shake off the yoke of servitude and raise the standard of
liberty. The intrimi..
