FROM ST. EUSTATIA. Norfolk, May 26. We learn from captain Wilkin
son, of the schr. Clarissa, which arrived here yesterday fromSt. Eustatia, that the patriot admiral Brion with a part of his squadron, consisting of a heavy sloop of war of about 22 guns, (his flag ship) formerly the British ship Emerald, a brig and several schooners, lay off St. Eustatia from the first to the fifth inst. He had several times been in St. Eustatia. The remainder of his squadron was at the Five Islands. Capt. W. heard no news worthy of notice. Flour was very high at St. Eustatia and St. Bartholomews, on the 5th inst but a very small quanticy would stock the market, there being no trade at either place. At St. Thomas, also, flour was in very good de-mand.
comfited "administration to be purchased no war of questionable utility to be vindicated no silver tongued orators to be hired nor does their appear one act M legislative authority, which is not directed to the welfare, the triumph, and the. happiness of the State, in opposition . to the. selfish considerations of even the very promoters of the measure. Still what is all this, but what the constitution of these kingdoms is calculated to bestow what we gather from history to have been derived from it and what, if measures and not men, were objects of political consideration with us, would still be diffused abroad with a profusion equal to the light of the Heavens.

From the Cork Mercantile Advertiser March 27. The Sunday papers received last night contain nothing of importance. Indeed, in the dark and defined state of the continental politics, there is little which can give rise to conjecture or remark. France, under the semblance of freedom, a victim to the struggles of an antiquated system, seeking to control the more nervous and youthful efforts of liberal and unrestraid opinions, is as yet too much unsettled to justify the prediction of the practical politician, or gratify the philosophy of the metaphysical speculator. Spain deserves attention at this moment, merely from the relations in which her transatlantic possesions stand with the triumph cf Civil Liberty. At home she ha? no claim to notice. The object, indeed, upon which the eye rests with most complacency, is the spot where freedom and happiness appear to be enjoyed most profusely, and where the private enjoyment of the individual sacrifices little to the fertilizing stream of public prosperity The progress towards more uncontroled freedom more prosperous commerce & the more unmixed diffusion of domestic comfort, which marks the present state of the American republic, is
really little less than wonderful. The arts appear to arise there, not from the mere combination of experimental successes learned from Europe, but to be the original, nervous efforts of native mind, gathering its data, in untrodden regions, and amidst scenes of undisturbed and uncontroled na-
Extract of a letter, dated on board the United States ship Hornet, CapcHenn, April 28. " We arrived here from NewYork on the 22d inst. His sable majesty will not receive Mr. Tay. lor, because his credentials are not addressed to " Henry, King of Hayti." We expect to sail tomorrow for Port au Prince, and thence to the Spanish Main. On our arrival here we fired a salute of 21 guns, which was returned by the same number. His majesty spends most of his time in the country, superintending the building of a fortification. It is situated on the summit of a very high mountain, having but one passage to it, which has been cut through the rock & will not admit more than three men abreast. It is not yet finished, although he has 800 pieces of cannon mounted, most of which are brass, and none less than twenty four pounders. Within this fortification he has provisions and clothing sufficient for the subsistence of an army of 20,000 men for seven years."
STOP THE MURDERER .' ! I ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS HEW A li D . Broke jil on Tuesday night the d of June SAMUEL WALKER,, who has been committed for murder, he is supposed to be between 45 and 50 years of age, fair hair, blue eyes, sandy complexion, looks trncvugh hh oye brows, a little stoop shouldered near six feet high, well made, coarse featured, his dress is supposed to be plain homespun, it is probable he has a rifle with him, has a. scar on his neck occasioned by his attempting to commit murder on himself, the morning that it is supposed he murdered his nephew Benjamin Morrison. He was oneof the first settlers in the Miami Purchase and has spent a greatpart of his timeir. hunting, when inxtoxicated very talative but when sober a man of few words, and rather slow in speech. The above reward will be given, for said criminal if he is returned to the Jail of Butler countv. PIERSON SAYRE, Sforif of Butler county state of Ohio. Hamilton June 10, 1818. Printers throughout the United States are requested to give the above three or four insertions, to have the perpetrator of such horrid crime brought to justice.1
A number of merchants of Holland have petitioned the government to exclude American vessels from Batavia; but it was thought this application would be unsuccessful, as a former one had been. The Dutch have not, at present, a sufficient number of vessels to carry on their commerce. A kidnapper by the name of Jernigard, has been sentenced to suffer death in Wayne county N. Carolina. A Virginia Editor appears to wish the merchants of that state to compete with those of Massachusetts in the exportation of ice. If they do, our agriculturists must balance the rivalship by growing tobacco Eastern paper.
ture. The love of country is amongst that people an untortured and uncolorcd instinct, wasted, not in the diverging rivulets of personal aggrandizement, but rushing forward, a great good, for the welfare of a people. Their politics are not politics of a party. There are no wasteful expenditures ot public money to be justified no secrets of a dis-
Nathan Lukins, of Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, for refusing to pay a militia fine, and resisting the officer sent to collect it, has been sentenced, by the United States circuit court at Philadelphia to pay a fine of 150 dollars, and be imprisoned six months.
To the Electors of Jefferson County. Fallow Citizens: The dayis fast approaching when you will be called upon to elect some suitable person for the office of sheriff and having been solicited by a number of my friends, I now make known to you that I am a candidate for the same, and if elected will serve you to the utmost of my abilities. EKILLIS WILLHITE. June 25, 1818. 81 3t tf-LAST NOTICE. ALL those indebted to the subscriber either by note or book account, are requested to come forward without delay and settle their accounts.
