FROM THE UNION. TO ALCANDER. " Say, wilt thou not resign thy lyre, Whose thrilling chords ne'er waked m -jam? No I would not resign my lyre, For India's wealthiest mine; I would not part with poesy's fire, For all thou cteem'st divine ! 1 would not change my bosom throes, To win a monarch's smile ; I would not change deaf poesy's woes, To gain an emerald isle. Alcander, know, theiris a bliss, E'en in a poet's tear; There is a charm in friendship's kiss, Than gold more richly dear;
And all that pleasure wealth or power, Can to the soul impart, Is cold and lifeless as the fire That warms a feeling heart. Then come, my lyre, for O too long, In slumber hast thou lam ; My soul is heavy wake thy song, And cheer me yet again. Thou hast one friend who loves to hear Thy "simple wood-notes wild;" Then, fearless, wake thy strain so dear, Andsooth " misfortune's child." Believe not thou that virtue's . smile, Will ne'er reward thy strain, Belicvcfnot thou that all thy tcil, Is fruitless care and pain. For now around thy chords is 'twined, A wreath by virtue wove; A chaplet fair, of flower refined, Wreathed by the hand of love. And though rude storms may dare invade, To blight these budding flower s, Despair not thou thy worth is weighed By one who sees thy powers. Then, O my lyre, we must not part, While I have life and breath ; No I will press thee to my heart, Yea, grasp thee firm in death ! BOSTON BARD. June 6, 1818. 7831 THE COTTAGE. O ! share my cottage, gentle maid, It only waits for thee, To give a sweetness to the shade, And happiness to me. But envious pride it cannot boast, 'lis all simplicity ; No perfumes from Arabia's coast, . , Nor costly gems thou'lt see. Here from the splendid, gay parade, Of noise and folly free ; Nor sorrows can my peace invade, If only bbst with thee. A truly fond and faithful heart, Is all I offer thee ; And can'st thou see me thus depart, m A prey to misery i Then share my cottage, dearest
maid, . It only waits for thee, To add fresh beauties to the shade, And happiness to me. The author of Waverly, Guy
Mannering, &c. (late English novels of a historical character) it it is said, has received as his tuoi. ety of the profits arising from the sale of his works, c;:e hundred and Jour thousand dollars! It must be confessed that literary property is not without its value in England. We do not believe, although this is the most reading country in the world, that any author has, in the United States, ever realized a fourth part of the sum by his literary labours, unless in the composition of school dictionaries or spelling books. It is observed that in the kingdom of Bavaria, there are at least three thousand Noble Families which, if five individuals are allowed for each family would produce a total number of fifteen thousand, or one noble to every 213 persons ! The kingdom should be called The nation of No blemen.
