PROM THE XtNTINEt. THE POWER OF VIRTUE. -Come gentle power, inspire my muse to raise, Prolific themes to utter all thy . .praise; Give me thy influence shed thy brightness round, And echo! oft the universal sound. Then may I praise thee with unboud ing sway, Glit'ring in beams of each effulgent day, Where nature smiles serenely on that youth, Whose soul is honor, sentiment, and truth, Who knows each wish, each action to control, .Bless'd with a noble, plilosophic soul. Now pause and listen while my words impart, , The soft effusions of the blameless heart, . 'Tis all your soul (each tumult charm'd away, , Yields gently, led by Virtue's heavenly sway : By thee inspir'd oh Vfetue ! age is young, .And music warbles from the faultering tongue; But when youth's bloom reflects thy beautious beams, Resistless on the view, bright glostreams. In lovely youth the gentle power is known; 'There it oft chooses to erect its throne, herc dowry scenes lie open to the view, And heavenly wisdom sips the morning dew; Where virtue smiles when all the graces move, , And every breast beats high with social love; They guard their souls from envy, and deceit, And prove that virtue is forever
great. Methinks I see the happy throng advance, Whose spirits to the song of gladness dance, Jfow nearer. Mill, I view them on the plain, Marching majestic, and even not in vain, vfeor they behold new scenes of love arise, Salubrious fields, and the etherial shies, Burst on their sight, fills their souls with joy. Which grandeur ne'er can buy, buy, nor wealth annoy. By thy soft power, oh virtue ! we , survey, The gloomy scenes of vice obstruct our way, But our best gift is thy delightful theme ; Whom all that know must value and esteem: Sweetly the lark hymns forth the expressive pray'r, Poiz'd on his quiv'ring pinnacle of air; Sweetly the amorous Linnet's temperate tale, Courts the soft echoes of the listning vale ; But sweeter far is virtue's lasting power, Possess'd of hope in death's all solemn hour. A. Bloomfoldrti';.
