PROM THE BOSTON CENT1NEL. TIME. See Revelations 10 Chapter. High on his throne of moss-rob'd ruins sate An hoary monarch, erst cali'd Time: Around his temples growl'd the storms of fate, And svvift-wing'd lightnings flash' d sublime. .Jlia head was pillow'd on the mountains steep, His limbs reclin'd o'er all the earth, And, as if tir'd of havoc, seem'd to sleep, To wake refrcsh'd for horrid mirth. JJut ere he rose, a form supreme, ly fair, Whose brow a rainbow wreath entwin'd --His visage as the sun, his feet as fire, And in an azure cloud enshrin'd, Descending from his bright abode of bliss, And on the earth his left foot set ; His right the weary billows kindly kiss, Nor dare his garments' hem to wet. He rais'd his arm and trembling, pale with fear, The king of devastation woke; Then thunder'd forth his mandate in his ear, Till ocean's coral cavernsshook: " By Him who form'd the earth, and sea, and air, Who was, and is forever more .,; ;d By him, thou hoary-headed kjn I swear, Thy fate is seal'd thy reign is o'er." Frem thc Connecticut Courant. The following, from Kotzcbuc's Travels in Italy, is a striking account of the once famous .city of Pompeii, which not long previous to the christian era, was swallowed upJby an earthquake, and overwhefiried by the volcanic lava from Mount Vesuvius j and the ruins of which were dug out at immense labor and expense, during the last century. " A great rich town, that, after lying 18 centuries in a deep grave, is again shone pn by the sun, and stands amidst other cities, as much a stranger as any one of its former inhabitants would be jreioii; his posterity of the prepr:sei;t uayj such a town has not oj eiK 1 in the world. . Thevvholepavementisingood condition ; it consists merely of considerable pieces of lava, which, however, are not cut (as at pre, sent) into squares, and may have been on that account the more durable." , " What must have been tne feelings of the Pompeians, when the roaring of the mountain and the quaking of the earth waked them from their first sleep. Ihey attempted also to escape the wrath of the gods ; and seizing the most valuable things they could lay their hands upon in the darkness and confusion, to seek their safety by flight. In this street, and before the house that is marked with friendly salutation on its threshold, seven skeletons were found ; the first carried a lamp and the rest had still be tween the bones of their fingers something that they wished to save. On a sudden they were o. vertaken by the storm that descended m heaven, and sunk into the grave thus made for them. Before the above mentioned country house, was still a male skeleton standing with a dish in his hand ; and as on his fingers he wore those rings that were allowed to be worn only by Roman knights, heis supposed to have been the master o&the house, who had just opened the back garden gate with the intent of flying, when the shower overwhelmed him. Several skeletonsTere found in the very posture of which they had breathed their last, without ; being forced by the agonies of death to drop the things which they had in their hands."
