Mr." Brookey has declined as a candidate for commissioner. It may be seen by examining the three last numbers of our paper, that 'Edwin' lias employed his pen in trying to inform the minds of the votcn of this county, of the standing 'or character of the two candidates for clerk. One, helias certainly placed in an unft- ' vorable point of view ; and if his statements be true, ought forever to fink the Gen. in the estimation f all good men : but if it shoud turn out in the sequel, that the charges he has exhibited are false, and the gen. innocent ; then hi reputation, so far from being injured, willriic higher andctand fairer than it hai ever done here telore. But some doubts ciitt of tie proba iiity of doing that, to the sacisfactioa of the candid part of mankind. The other, he has extoiicd very UNNECESSARILY. We aH know that Talbott is not perfection he is not infalibie ; he has his foibles ; yet he has been fortunate enough to support a chancter .s a patriot k citizen, that will enable him to stand on his mm footing, without Edwin's encomiums. Can a ny fcuta call in question Talbot t's
veracity : it is presumed not, or it certainly would have been done ere the present time. Since the above wxs written, we have been called on by a gen tlcnian who produced an order" from fourteen of our subscribers (at Ntw-Lexington and its vicinity) with money to discharge . their accounts and have their names stricken off from our Hit ; which we did with pleasure, and feel under some obligations to those gentlemen for having made prompt payment; particularly as uc were in need of a little ready money. Some persons have been 2 little displeased at on editorial note in the 3rd number of this paper, k some others were greatly irritated xn consequence of the writing of .Edwin the 2nd having been refused a place in our columns- It is aiuch to be regretted. It to us, very unpleasant to give offence ; yet, let the effect be what it may, wc will not consult Edwin the 2nd as an assistant editor. Whether tkc course we may pursue will ultimately cause us to sink or swim, time must ditcrxtiine, but bo long as a press is at our conuriRnd, so long will we ding to the rieering oar of the tdiioriid department. No doubt it is recollected that we published a f ew lines for . Gen. M'Tailaud, correcting his, adver. tiscnrciit to thoke concerned. Some Lv.y bodies have, charged us with baring ir.sertcd the words 4;;r my coiumanti" in that adver tbement, without any authority
