INDIGNATION NESTING. ?’ Patriot) Nov, 6, I860. At a meeting of the citizens of Patriot ami vicinity, in the School Douse last night, a !tioaimiUte were appointed to draft resolution? indicative of .the feel* I ings of the citizens, in'jelalion fo thei case of James Dever, at the last term of the Court at Vcvay. j Al a called meeting of some two hundred of the citizens of this 1 couuty today, tbeftlloVing resolutions; were presented by said Committee, and being read, were adopted by the unanimous consent of all present: WncRgAs,- At the recent leipt of the Circuit Court of this judicial district, held, : at Vevay in this county, twelve men on' their oaths convicted a man by the name/ of J amesDevcf, of a crime the most odious and heinous known in the annalaof human depravity—a crime loathed and detested by every husband; father and brother, not'degraded by ignorance and brutal passions below the- level of beasts of prey—a crime that every just man bates with.a perfect billed. And whereas, said twelve men, stilt on their baths.'after finding the culprit guilty of the aforesaid crime,'charged in the indictment, unaccountably sentenced him to the trilling punishment of two years confinement in- lhat scbool of vice, the State's Prison, to be turned loose at. the end of that brief period; twofold'more a child of bell than when he tattled It.And whereas, 1 under a well meant but mistaken clemency, originating in a misplaced hope of (reformation,' many honest but weak men, in their sympathy for the unfoitunate; guilty, forget the ' duties they owe to society, thus joining hands with the profligate, and abandoned sympathizer, vviitr the detected viololor of law, ami forming .a public opinion adverse to the ends ol justice and the public peace, and security. And whereas, under the influence of this vitiated public opinion, the. worst and most revolting of crimes \ ate multiplying from the center to the circumference of this great nation, in every State and Territory of the' Union, filling our courts of justice, bur jails and I Slate's, prison’s with burglars, highway robbers, murderers, seducers and viola-1 lots of female cliasiity, thus burdening i the Wealth and labor of the producing and useful classes with heavy and yearly 1 increasing tales. And whereas, under the evil influences above named, a tcyil incarnate, recently committed that most monstrous of all human atrocities, a rape, upon the young but simple heatled wife lot an industrious, honest, but unrelf-re-1 ii3at citizen, under circumstances endangering the life of the helpless victim ef bis beastly passion, and her unborn child, the young wife having become a young mother in less than six weeks from the commission of the infernal deed. And whereas, the victim ol this outrage is the daughter of one of our oldest and must respectable inhabitants, ami extensively and respectably connected with many of our most reliable and worthy citizens by consanguinity, and by the mote enduring ties of social and . moral obligations ot neighborly intercuusse, in the exchange of mutual courtesies and | favors. And w hereas, this unpardonable j rin w as committed in our midst, and the finding of the verdict of guilty,' and as ■ the total and unaccountable inadequate- j ness of the punishment, to the enormityj of the crime, rests upon a Jury of this I county, it becomes our duty, and as we think, the duty of alt advocates of jus-! lice, in this judicial district, to manifest j in.some suitable and proper way, deles-

The Population op Indiana.— The census returns show our population to be 1,347,000. In 1850 it was 990,258. The increase in the last ten years is 356,742, or about 36 per cent. The enumeration falls below tbe genorAl estimate, but as our citizens are mostly engaged in agricultural pursuits, and we have pp large cities to swell the population, (Iie'result presents* very gratifying evidence of progress and prosperity. If the ratio xf representative population 'should ha increased to 125,000, we shall probably retain onr present representation in Congress.
