>‘‘I don't approve of donation par* lies,” returned Dr. William;. “1 believe that if every person who ii willing to contribme would give only half as much as they expecting and that in money, their contribution would be much more acceptable.” . A parish meeting was called, to consider what should be done. A few, among whom was Dr. Williams, were in favor of raising the minister's salary to five hundred dollars; but the majority thought it would make the taxes to high. One proposed getting up a tea party, the proceeds to be given to Mr, Lewis, Another tbu't it would be better to raise money by subscription; but il was finally decided that they should give him b donation.party. The ladies favored this; and at a meeting of the "Benev* olent Society,” the next day, it was agreed that they hould appropriate the sum -of two dollais to boy a large spittoon, which was to be presented, in the name of the society, to Mr. Lewis.

And'what was’the result of the donation party? Few thlngs'of any value remained, A pair of chickens, a strip of salt pork, & palm-fap, a boot jack, a basket of apples/ two skeins-of sewing silk, a couple of pocket-handkerchiefs, a paper of tea and ono of sugar,; some "herbs, besides a load of wood, and a Urge loaf of brown bread—which was so hard that it would be of more service in making bullets than anything eUa —together with three towels and a spittoon. These weic all that remain* ed after the parly had gone. - Mrs, Lewis was disappointed.— She had looked forward with pleasure to the donation party, anticipating that she might, perhaps receive from some of tbs parish—she scarcely knew who—a dress which she needed very much. She imagined, also, that her husband would be presented with a dressing-gown by the Benevolen Society. And she secretly cherished the hope that some one 1 1 wonld bring a carriage for the baby. Bnt bow.different was the reality! After due deliberation, Mr.-- Lewis sent in bis resignation to fats people, being satisfied that be could not lire on his present salary. ' They were taken quite aback by this supposing that, after the donation party, their minister was well pro* vided for. Another parish meeting was called; and a committee of three Chosen to wait npon Mr. Lewis, and urge him to revoke his decision. Bnt this he was unwilling to do.
