Emerson Etheridge, delivered the other day in Tennessee: - • Mr. Etheridge said* in general re* view of slavery throughout the world, that it had been swept from Ask end Europe and now found a locality only in the cotton ami tobacco States of tbo American continent; that Jesus Christ preached to slaveholders there, and they had given vp their slaves; and wherever slavery had been abolished, it bad been on account of’ the popular voice against it. He said tlint the South had always got her rights. She bad always got what she ashed for, and more too. He read ilia Republican platform, section by section, and ashed the people if there was anything in it to offend the South, or cause her to resist the inauguration of Mr, Lincoln* He said there was not. And, so far as bis election would effect the South, it would be the same as if Bell was elected. In cither event there would to on era ot general prosperity; property would. rise; the treasury njould be filled, and the price of negroes would go up. It was cut from the Korfolk Daily Argos, and contained two polite questions, Ilia first question, "If Lincoln be elected would the Sooth be justified in seceding?" To this 1 emphatically answer no. [Grcatap-1 plause.J The Coniiimtional election of any man Would not . justify any attempt to dissolve this glorious Confederacy. [Applause.] Second question, "If the Southern States secede from the Unoin upon the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln before be commence an overt act agaiust their coDsituttonal rights, will yon advise or vindicate resistance by lores to their secession?" 1 answer, emphatically, that it Is the duty of the President of tbo United Stales, and all others in authority under him, to enforce the laws of tlie United States passed by Congress, and as the Courts expound them. - And I, as in duly bound by my oath and idclity to tbo Constitution, would do all id my power to aid the Government of tho. United States in maintaining the supremacy of the laws against all resistance to them, come trom whatever quarter it might.
