The Upper Mississippi is very low, and the smaller class of boats find it difficult to get along. The Memphis Appeal of last Friday says the Arkansas river is lower and in a worse condition than ever known. The channel of the Mississippi at Helena and all points below, is crooked, snaggy and very difficult to successfully navigate. The Cumberland river is lower at the present time than it has been for thirty years. The steamer Choctaw, Capt. Silvers, is sunk at Island 34, where she had been aground for some time. She was heavily freighted at the time. The steamer Harmonia has been sold at St. Louis for $3,000, for the Upper Mississippi trade.

The Madison Courier says: The mailboats make their down trips now with, heavy freights. We learn they refuse freights every day at Cincinnati. The failure of the crops in Georgia and part of South Carolina, requites shipments to a largo amount. This demand, with the demand for shipment to Europe, enhances the price of wheat and flour in the valley of the Ohio. The Forest Queen, the Madison and Cincinnati packet, goes up every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday; returning Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Queen is the largest and fastest boat running above the Falls at present, and her accommodations are No. l. Wm. C. Blanker is her popular and efficient Book-keeper. LOUISVILLE CANAL.—The Journal, says: The contract for building the branch canal at this city was let on Saturday to Messrs. Theodore Barton & Co., of New York; gentlemen who come with the highest credentials as to capacity and means to carry out any contract they may undertake. The contract for the enlargement of the present canal has not been let, as the precise plan upon which enlargement is to be made has not yet been matured. It is proposed to make the enlargement by sections, and without interfering with the transit of boats, which arrangement is very proper. In the meantime the tolls are essential in defraying the expense of the work and paying the interest on the bonds proposed to be issued on a mortgage of the canal, which bonds will no doubt command as high a price in the stock market as any in the country, as the income from tolls will be sufficient to pay the entire indebtedness at no distant day. The security will therefore be as substantial as any could desire. We trust that the Commissioners will see that the new masonry be made of the best materials, as such material can be obtained in this State as well as in Indiana.

The "Jacob Strader," the monster of the Western waters, is undergoing several very important alterations, preparatory for the fall trade. The low-pressure boilers are being removed, to give place for five high pressure boilers, sixty-two inches in diameter, and twenty eight feet long, each boiler having five flues. The chimneys are being moved forward, a portion of her stem is to be cut off, other improvements which will make a far better vessel than she ever was before. She is to use her low-pres-sure engines, but will be lightened at least seventy-five tuns by the substitution of high pressure boilers. The Telegraph is also undergoing a general overhauling, but no material alterations.
