Many of the older citi- ! zons of Baltimore remember Lthe incidents of the last war | with Great Britain, and the | gallant defenso* ( at NorthPoint by fho citizen soldiery.— Among others who hurried to the detbnse at that time a company of horsemen from Frederick, and in the front rank of that company was a’ commanding-looking young man in the plain black dreea ofaminister, but with a nohlo and gallant in hand. This was the Rev. Charles G. McLean, a follow student of the Rev. John M. Duncan, so long known in Baltimore. Mr. McLean had just received a call to the charge of a church in Frederick. On the Sabbath morning when tho express took the news of tho arrival of the English fleet arid the landing of their troops at North Point,. Mr. McLean ascended his pulpit, selected a suitable text, preached a inost patriotic sermon, and in conclusion called upon every man to rally to the defense, of his country, himself setting the example, and the next day appearing, as above stated, in tho ranks of the volunteers. From that time Mr. McLean devoted | himself to tho ministry, j through a long mid useful life. 1 On the -Itlnnst. he died atTndimmpolis, Ind., of congestion of the urn in. Three days after, his- beloved wife followed him.. "When told that her husband was dead, she clasped her hands and exclaimed, ‘ ! I thank thee, 0 Father, that he is at home; now let mo soon follow him; life has for me no attractions, and death no terroro. 5 * llov ■ *•*»- swered, ami she gently fell asleep in Jesus.

! full/ approve of the purpose oi the sound Democracy to put a Brack1 ioridge and Lane Electoral ticket in the field to this State, ‘ My i sympathy and judgment ' are with them, and I cannot but hopt tint they may locceed. It ii said that this Is going counter to.r.nd lotting the regular nomination, and that >i will prevent Douglas getting the vote of this Bute. I deny bulb o( these propositions. It was not regular to adjourn the Convention from Charleston to Bahimoie.. It was not regular to exclude, at the latter city, duly appointed delegatee Irons: their scats, it. was not' regular to i nominate candidates by one half-the members after the other half had withdrawn; nor is it true that running a Breckinridge and Lane ticket wilt defeat Doogias in this State.— My observation satisfies me there are enough sound Democials in the Stale who would not rote forthe Douglas ticket if no othet ticket was in the field, to defeat him; but, however this may he, it is the right and dal; of all mea to vote for such men as I f Jhoirprinciplca. The truth] is, there is u? fSgolar nominee of the Democratic part/ the field, and! every Democrat is nl iitaCy to vote j for whom he pleases, withoui viola-1 ting patty usages or part; faith, l i prefer Bteckinridge and Lane, because i their political faith and platform are mine. It is said that this policy will elect Lincoln. Let it be so, ratter than that JDovght should succeed. 1 believe that Lincoln it a more conservative and sounder national man than Douglas, and that lest danger to the Union, and to Us parts, .Vdr/d and Souths it to be feared by the election 0} the former than of the taller. I do not doiire the election of a man who says, «« Doogias does, ."It matters not what way .lbe Supremo Court* may hereafter decide as to the ah* j strict question .whethcr~slavery mayf or may not go iulo a Territory under \ (he Constitution; the people have the j lauful means to introduce or exclude* it, as they please."- This shows that < Jio is neither a jurist uor a states* man, for being either, be must know that the judgments and ' deeteea ( of the Supreme Court,.under our form of Government must be obeyed; tho' it should take the whole power of ibe Untfad States to enforce them; and that there are nolauful means to prevent or defeat their execution. : An appeal cannot be lawfully ta* ken from the judgment 1 of lha Bapreme Court to a .popular meeting. This would be revolution and anarchy, not within the Constitution and laws of the Union. At well may-it. be said ibal if the Supreme,Court has decreed, in »• proper case, that Mr. Douglat is (be owner of'a'acc-'i tion of laud in Kansas, the 'people! of the Tonitory have the lavfuh mean* to deprive fat id of it. This i* | monstrous , doctrine, and the author j of it cannot receive my countenance j for the Presidency. ME Douglas j has-proved falie to sound prin-: ciplesof tha Constitution and of bis; party, and is not worthy of support.! “Ho has dented the faith, aud- iai worae than on iotlciej.” - Caesar j denied the imperial purple to enable| him to pay. his debts and npfcoftb bit bankrupt - coffers,. exhausted by j extravagance and in ambitious strife for power. (Or In the last Some Journal, hit, Willii gives an interesting account of bis-observations in a recent visit to Antioch College, The influence of each sex, he says, upon tho manners oad habit* «i ibo oihor, is found to be refining, as well as stimulative of the highest ambitions; though, naturally,, the effect is stronger upon the older than upon the younger, students, NoiusUaliA, Wynod \h*V of absolute propriety, is put upon their taiercomse. The recitations and lectures are of course in common; but so also ate the ineald—the refectory being arranged with email tables, at which: they fora their own parties 6t four or six, eating and conversing together with the freedom of acquaintances in a restaurant. Out of study hours‘they associate as they'please, often forming picnics and finding amutement to tbs beautilnl ■ scenery of the neighborhood, and mingling much with the society around. Preferences and attachments are inevitable, of courts; but these, honorably panned, are not discouraged or interfered with; and, though undergraduate marriages are not common (particularly while the lady U a -Freshman"), one instance has occurred of husband and wife taking their, degrees as "Bachelors of Arts" at the same Commencement. One couple of "best scholars," who had become attached white "Seniors," aud married after graduating, relumed to the College to become each a Professor. The "Faculty" seem to act- upon the principles as safely established, that love !a only an explosive and dangerous element when bottled tip too tightly, and that free inlwtWKtt, btlw«.w intellectually employed persona of both sexes, results in greater refinement certainly —matrimony possibly—very rarely iu mutual Injury, It should be mentioned, perhaps, tbit the gentle sex has one special offiftr— a "matron." who] regulates personal habits by presiding over the "dormitory", or separate large building where the female students lodge—and that the present incumbent of this office, Mrs. Paine, a New England' matron, is exercising a very marked influence on ibe, College by her singular efficiency and good judgment,. The groat purpose— togive Ms imotter* of the West a liberal education—>U (hue prevented from having. the possible drawback of "scholarly sloveliness." The well known fact that this la the chtapat place of. education in the world suggests its advantages, at within retch, to a class humbler in life, but with its share of noble natures; and among these last‘mentioned we should certainly number oue yoapg woman who is at present successfully pursuing her studies at the College, but who came there without means, and soon found a way to support herself by hiring <u cook to a family in the neighborhood. There is a Spartan quality in this which tells well as an incident at the %t Mater" of a new country.— Cue rather droll instance of pioaier
