FvICIUtiWAY,
Somewhere, down tbo stream of Time On which wo are Soiling, is a beautiful island, called the By-and By. It may be jnsl before u?, beyond the next turn of tbs river; or wo may not find it until tbo stream disembogues itself into tbo real ocean. of eternity. Bat wo all look for it, from infancy to old age, jmd dream that all evil will bo banished, when we arrive at that beatifol island—By and-by. j All day wo float down the turbulent stream; the blue cove of heaven burns above us; tbo unfathomable depths yawn beneath us; the mysteries of God oud immortality stream in upon us with their awful splendors, and truths that have the loftiest intellects—truths that in all ages have roused up tna soul from its foundations, baptizcdjt with reverence and kindled it into love, environ ui : with their intensity, and all thoughts of the island are banished from the mind. But when tbo solemn gray of the twilight falls around our bark, in fancy wc see its magical shores, green with trees of bcanty,. flitting before ,us like a star over the deyy shadows of years, and our longings all return to wander on-Us fairy .banks, and listen to the silvery voices of its inhabitants. And as tho rosy flash of the day fades in the west, and the watch-slurs open one after another their holy eyes, wo go to rest in the happy belief that the morning sunrise will gild this immortal land, full in our vision; this dime wo have sought, so long and so vainly, and whither have fled all the lost sommers of oar youth which we besought with lean to stay. [ A land of promise is that By-and by. - In it we ell have rich possessions, thj anticipated enjoyment of which-alone tenders life folerablfl’ — - The past has proven a weary - way; the present is full of thorns and beset with dangers, bat in the golden By and-by there is a tecompense for all. There tho broken heart shall be healed, and tho wfa'ry spiritfind .a‘rest. 1 Who would sell bis birth-rigbt in this land? Though poverty, gloom and desolation environ ns here, and wo have wealth ahe bealt and lovingfriends in that fait clime.

Mature unfolds her broad page for oar instruction, and gives us wondious lessons of the power ond wisdom of the Divine Architect. The stars, as they glitter above us, excite our admiring gaze, hut in the vast immensity of distance, Aye feel we cannot fully understand these mighty works, and turn with a feeling ol relief to objects more immediately within -the scope of our scrutiny. ; liOw wonderfully is the hourityof onr Maker displayed in the fragrant and beauteous flowers which deck the earth! The purposes of growth end reproduction might doubtless have been accomplished without the rich and varied hues of the blossom, or the delicate and subtle odor which exhales from its petals. But ho hks allowed ns these tokens of goodness to refine onr emotions, to elevate our thoughts, that , we may i adore the band that has.thus written inscriptions of beauty over the earth. A French writer has'spoken ofa political prisoner, who in the solitnde tf ku A * J ,4, * „ 4 MSUW spring up in bis narrow court-yard. Day by day ho watched its progress, and infidel as he was, he found the inquiry arising in his mind as to tho First Great Cause; That homhlc plant, as it grew and finally developed its welcome bloom, was the teacher which guided the.captive to the knowledge of hts God,' A traveler upon the sombre wilds of Africa, weary with bis toil, sank down dis-i heartened and almost ready to dle t Gazing around him, he eaw a little cluster of moss v wondrously'delicato and beautiful. The thought arose in his miud, “Can the great God luivsh such care upon this object and leave one of his rational creatures to perish?** The reflection iufused new jifo aud courage into his desponding heart, and bo renewed his journey with re-awakened confidence* in his Creator's goodness. Our Saviour drew lessons from the flowers, as they blossomed around him, ami pointing to the gorgeous, oriental lily, he desired his disciples to remember that the same Being who had lavished such exquisite tints upon those transient flowers, wouhkmucb more gladly provide for tho ncccssites of his children.

VILLAGE GKAVEI'ARD,
I never shun a graveyard —the thoughtful melancholy which it inspires is grateful rather than disagreeable, to me; it gives me no pain to tread on the green roof of that dark mansion, whose chambers I must occupy, so soonami I. often wander from choice to a place where there is neither solitude nor society. Something human is there—but the folly, the bustle, the vanites, the pretensions, the competitions; the pride of humanity are gone—men. are there, but the passions are hushed, and there, spirits are still—malevolence has lost its power of harming, appetite is stated, ambition lies low, and lust is cold; anger has done raving, all disputes are ended, alPrevelry is over, the fellest animosity is deeply buried, and the most dangerous sins are safely con fin- ; ed hy the thickly piled clods of the valley; viceisdumb and powerless, and virtue is waiting in silence for. the tramp of the archangel and the voice of-God.— jRa\ Greenwood.
