j THE BWH-'OrSUPIBB. ] ; Four diverse and powerful ‘organizations have now pre-j isented their rival candidates 1 | for the highest Executive offi-, -ces in the Republic; and it isj jremarkable that neither ofj them has chosen its first stand-ard-bearer from the original Thirteen States, from which every President was taken down to 1838—only thirty two years ago. Of the eight riyal pandidates for President, only one (Mr. Everett) is a citizen of an original State, though Mr.. Hamlin’s State, Maine, was included in Massachusetts Svhen he was born there. AH four candidates for President live in or just on the edge of the Mississippi Valley, while one of the can? didates for Vice-President (Gen. Lane) wlio was born in that Great Valley, now, hails from far-off Oregon. Mr. Douglas, though a Vermonter by birth, now hails ‘ from Illinois; Mr. Lincoln, though he has-,lived all his adult life in Illinois, was bom in Kentucky; and these two poor boys, from the oldest respectively of the How Free ami of the New Slave Stales, having migrated, when a little under age, to Illinois, and been there pitted against each other as the champions of their respective parties ini a contest for theD. IS. Sdnaorship, have now been chosen the candidates of the two greatest parties for the most honorable post on earth, because conferred by the free suffrages of an intelligent a i)it discerning people. The rival candidates, being chosen from the younger Stales, ore them*, selves younger than candidates for thuEO stations have usually been, — Messrs. Boll and Jivcrclk and Lauo are pretty well advanced in years; but Messrs. Lincoln; Hamlin, Douglas and Crock bridge are all relatively young, The three former a little over 50, arid the last named , about 40.— "Young America” appears to he taking the hit in his mouth, locally and generally.

THOUGHT. Jp a recent, lecture on Astronomy, by Prof. Mitchell, that gentleman closed with the foUowmg' passage: , •‘Light traverses space at the rate of twelve mUlmns miles a njinute, yet the light from the pearest star requires ten years to reach the earth, and Herschell’s telescope revealed stars twp thousand three hundred times further distant. The great telescope of Lord Hess pursued these creations of God still deeper info space, apd having resolved the nebula of the Milky Way into stars, dissevered, other systems of stars—-beau? tifiil diamond points, glitter? ing thro’ the black darkness beyond. When he beheld tfiis amazing abyssr-wheu he saw these systems scattered profusely throughout space —when he reflected upon their immense distance, their enormous magnitude, and the countless millions of worlds that belong to them, it seem* cd to,him as though the wild dream of . the German poet was more than realized. “God culled man in dreams into the vestibule of Heaven, saying, ‘Como up hither and I y/ill show thee the glory of my house.’ And to his angles who stood about his throne, he said, ‘Take him, strip him pf his robes and flesh; cleanse his affections; put , r a. new breath into his nostrils; bat touch not lus Iiiiman heart — the heart thatfears, and hopes Ujid trembles.’ A moment, mid it was done, and tlm man sfopd ready for bis 'unknown yoyage. Under the guidance of a mighty angel, with sound of flying pinions,; they sped away from the battlements of Heaven. Some time on the mighty angel’s wings they fled, through Saharas of darkness and wildernesses ofdeath At length from a distance not counted save in the arithmetic of Heaven, light beamed upon, them—a sleepy flame ns Seep through a hazy clouds They sped PU’ their terrible, speed to meot In a inomentthe b%.ingbfsimsshonp around them—a moment; the wheeling of planets~-then came long eternities of twh light; then again, on tl)c right hand and on the left, ed other constellations. At Igst the man sank down, cry.u)g, ‘Angel I can go no further; let me lie down, in the grave and hide myself from the infinitude of the universe, for end there is pone.’ ‘End is them none?’ demanded the angel. And from the glittering stars that shone around there came a choral shout, ‘End there is none!’ *End is there none?’again demanded the angel, ‘and is it this that awes thy soul? I answer, End there is none to the Universe of Gpd! Lo! also —There is no beginning!”

Quite Pkobable—A How Orleans paper tells, a utory which may: not bo true,- but which is certainly not improbable. A Hew York school girl thought it would be an excellent joke to advertise in a city paper for a husband; jstie did so, and, of course, rocoiyed replies. The writer of one pf these, who pretended to be the son of rich parents pt thp South, made her acquaintance withoutthe knowledge of her family, and finally induced her to elope with |)im, promising to marry her in Cincinnati. Of course he did not fulfil this promise, and of course, the silly girl was ruined, jShe was then left alonP in Hew Orleans.— She was driven by her despair to attempt sqicide, but was prevented from accomplishing this design. A volume 'of such stories, however, would not keep some school girls from indulgence in anony* mons flirtations. v
