THE corrox SUL AT ca.vseijox, LSD. While in CanncUon last week, by the kind. invitation 1 of the Snperin* tendcnt, E. Wilber, Esq., we paid a visit to the Indiana Cotton Mill situated in the midst of that thriving town. It ia a noble atone ntructaie, four stories high, and built most sub-, siantially upon a sme foundation; and well and securely supported from the basement to the roof. It is a chartered institution, which wa> first organized by the enterprise ol Hamilton Smith, Esq., then of thicity, but now a resident of Cannelton, Ind. The capital invested was, we believe, about 8500,01)0, including the landed estate in (be town. It has now changed hands, the new proprietors being H. I). Newcomb &. Co., of this euy, and otbera, under the superintendence of Mr. Wilbur, who haa a long experience io tbe factorv bnNtncss. ; :■

The entire product of Indiana Cotton Mill ia controlled and sold in this city, and it may be virtually ebasidereda Loots villa institution.' The Oaouelton sheetings and batting are leading articles of ;Onrcommerce, as crinccd by the sales in the daily market repot ta. - This brand oL sheet mg in fineness ■ of quality, smooth anti even texture, fully rivals the Eastern bra mis, and;; establishes the fact that the South-western market can be supplied by. bo trie manufacturers as good, if not far belter, than can be obtained from abroad. ‘ The en couragement to borne manufactures,' tends mote surely; to bring forth ibe. vast resources of the. great West, and tiiakw it assume a more prominent, if riot 'the leading and controlling position, in the policy and government/ot the Union. The -raw material lor almost all kinds of |.manufacture* is abundant and of easy [.access, and all that is warning is the 1 determination ot the Western peoi pie to abide by Ihcir own resources | ami nut depend upon others. - During the past year, the proprio tors of the Oaunelton Mill made s-veral very tuipuitsut ctiariges aud additions to the machinery of me factory, and have now at work the Lest and latest invented looms that cun be found in the country. This ha* enabled them to turn out finer work than heretofore, and they can now successful/ rival the Eastern, lactones. The mill contains 372 looms, 10,SOU spindles, and has 350 operatives constantly employed. To keep that vast number of machines in lupuuii, one of tbs most complete steam engines is used that we have ever seen. The engine room is as neat as a parlor, and everything moves like clockwork, with the utmost The battery ol boilers is ample,; and 400 bushels ol coal are daily consumed as fool in the lumaces. The coal is supplied from the contiguous mines of Oupt, Dwight Newcomb.. To supply the looms, the consumption of 4,000 bates of cotton is annually required. This is purchased cither at Memphis, orou plantations),and sea reel ya day passes without one of our Louisville packets discharging a lot of cotton at Uannelton lor the factory. ' Tinproduct of the mill annually sums up 4,500,000 yards of sheeting, am 10,000 bales of; batting, all menu* luctured expressly lor the Louisville market, ami sold by the enterprising firms of H. D. Newcomb' it Bro., and James Low <fc Co., metchauis of this city. Tho wages regularly paid tor the work in the factory, op craliveti, dec., amounts to 87,000 pet mouth, , That, together with the cost of Materials, dec., makes the annual expense of the factory but little short ol 8400,000. .The Uannelton mill, in addition to,unusual strength ot structure, combines all the elements of safety that art and foresight, as well as constant vigilance can cutnbine. Pumps, water pipes, water tank: 1 , water buckets, and hose, are profusely distributed all over the building, in addition to which, there are two immense reservoirs in the yard, and a file engine in close proximity, especially and exclusively fur the factory. Up the outside of the mill wall, in the rear, is a stationary iron ladder, which communicates with every story of the building and the roof, to be used in case of emergency. Ihe supply of water is abundant, and constantly lorced to the building from the river, by - means of steam power, especially applied. The lactory is lighted by gas, which is manufactured on the pretimes from the coal of the Uannelton minus, which makes a beautiful, bright; and cheap light, aa well as a much safer one than oil. In the basement of the mill is located a watch clock that is so arranged, constructed and connected by wires leading to all the rooma, that the night watch cannot neglect making a visit without detection.— He is required to traverse every room in the building, and pull a wire connected with the clock in each story, a sort of index, every ball boor. In conclusion, we will add, that it is a model western or southwestern institution, and the material manufactured is as good, durable, and cheap as made elsewhere. .
