As be paced his room distracted with the force of bis feel lings, the name of Mary was perpetually on his lips; no emotion could shake the power of that attachment. At last he opened the door of hts room, walked hurriedly through the spacious ball, opened'the front door, passed out, closing it gently behind him, unheard by his servants, who might have followed him, lie followed the gravel walk leading over the gently sloping lawn, pasted out at the gate and stood upou.the river's bunk. Here ho pau-ed for a few minutes, as if in deep thought, and gazed Vacantly hi the cotton-wood : trees which lined the banks of the river, and then hurried on, as if impelled by some ungovernable power, until he leuchedaa open space clear of trees; here be stopped. DY "THE SOLITARY It A S’."
It was Saturday evening—some three weeks bad passed away since his wife bad left him, and James Preston was seated in his solitary rooni, with a Bible and some theological' books on his table and writing materials before him; he was endeavoring to prepare a sermon for the approaching Sabbath) for he still continued to preach at intervals in C . Lie had altogether lost | whatever energy ho had formerly possessed, but his mind was still perfectly collected, while in the pulpit, though he had the look and voice of an invalid; and there was at times a most touching pathos in his words, particularly when his subject led him to speak of tho weakness of human nature, and his audience had more than once, observed him shedding tears. His eftVrls at composition now. were the impulsive; powerless efforts, of a stricken mind. He would lean lor a long time with his head on his hand, looking vacantly on thd paper; then ho would begin and write rapidly for a few minutes, and then pause and throw away , the sheet in-, dignant. Many hall-written sheets were lying around lyfi); for though the capability of fxpressing his thoughts with his former force was gone, yet ho had still judgement enough to know his deficiencies. At last he threw down his pen in despair, and. passed lijs band with a convulsive motion over his brow, his lips moved, and half articulated the hame of Mary. He was thinking of'the times when ho used to write with her, as his aspiring genius by. bis side, various conversaiions which bo had held with her on tho subject of pulpit eloquence arose, word by word. in. his recollection, until he looked around through the large, dimly lighted room to sec her face, as ho was almost me ho heard her nrgitig him to study a .more' intellectual style of preaching — he thought she was near him—he tWi he heard her saying the teachers ol religion should in conjunction with the most earnest feeling.of the real spirit of tho Gospel, bestow the highest mental culture on their minds, that their compositions might, in a literary point of view, bear comparison with the best writings of the present day.

.There was a lime when James Preston aspired to the highest ranks hf pulpit oratory; but now he deeply fell that his efforts were hopeless, for ho had wilfully driven, away the gonitis of his mind, and without her, his mind was poweiless, lie pushed his writing materials aside, and drawing aside the curtain of a window,he 'gazed out on the darkness of: n misty, moonless night. No sound was heard in the house, for bis'servants had long since retired to their quarters; the window by which he stood looked pot upon the hi oad Ohio as it rolled on majestically towards' the sea—it was a fitting time for James Preston to look into the troubled places of his toulj as bo stood long with his brow pressed against the glass, and his eyes fixed upon the thick gloomy night.
