“I resided for several years in a spacious old stone house, agreeably situated, amid fruit trees and shrub* beryl on the banks of the Ohio River, in Switzerland County, Indiana.— Two verandas, above and below/ with outside stairs leading up to them, ran the entire length of the bouse on the side next to the river. 'Ibcse, especially the upper one with its charming prospect, were a common resort of the family. - ••On the 15th of September, 1845, my younger sister, J: , was married, and came with her husband, Mr. 11 ■ ■ M ,to pass a portion of the honeymoon in our pleasant retreat.

“I could not donbt (be lad’s word. He had bo motive for deceiving us. The island of which he spoke was two miles distant from our home; and, under alt circumstances, I settled down to the conclusion that as. in my sister’s cane, her husband had appeared where be was not, aoin the case of the boy also it was the appearance only, not the real person, that 1 had seen (hat evening. It tv»i remarkable enough .that both the in* ' cidents should have occurred in the same house and on the same day. “It is proper 1 should add that my sister’s impression that the apparition of her husband foreboded death did not prove true. He outlived her; and no misfortnne which they could in any way connect with the appearance happened in the family. "Nor did Silas die; nor, as far as I know, did anything unusual bap* pen to him.”* .■ This case is, in some respects, a strong one. Tbero was evidently no connection between the appearance ' to the one aiater and that to the other,' There was no excitement pre* cecding the apparitions in each case, the evidence, so far as one sense went, was' Is'strobg as if lha'roal person ■ bad been present. The narrator expressly says she would‘unhesitating- ■ ly have sworn, in a court of Justice,. to the presence of-the. boy Silas, —. The sister addressed the appearance of her husband, unexpected as it wav. without, donbt or hesitation. Tho theory of .hallucination may account for both cases; bnt, whether it does or not, the phenomenon is one wnich '• ought to challenge (he attention 1 of the jurist as well as the psychologyst. If appearances soexoctly counterfeiting reality aa these, can occasionally cheat human sense, their possible occurrence ought not to be ignored in - laying down rules of evidence. The presumption, of course, is, in every case, very strongly, against them.—• Yet cases hart occurred in which an o/i&t, satisfactorily proved yet con*; dieting with seemingly unimpeachable evidence, has completely puzzled the court. .

••Previously to to this, however.— •namely, about au Hour before Hugh's return,—while we were sitting in the parlor, on the lower door, 1 saw a boy. some sixteen years of age, look in at the door'of the-room. It was a lad whom my husband employed to work in the garden and about the hutinV and who, in his leisure hours, took great delight iu amusing ray littlo con Prank, of whom he was vety fond. He was dressed, as was bis wont, in a suit of bine summerdoth, with an old palm-leaf bat I without a bond, and be advanced, in I his usual batbful way, a step or two Into the room, then stopped, .and looked round, apyaranU.y in latch of something. Supposing that be was looking for the children, 1 said, to him. •Frank is in bed, Silas, and asleep long ago.’ Ho did not reply, but, turning with a quiet smile that waa common to him, wad left the room, and I.noticed, from the window, that he lingered near the outside door, walking backward end forward before it once or twice. If I had aflet ward beeen required to depose, on oath, before a t court of justice, that 1 bad seen' the boy enter and leave the room, and also that 1 bad noticed him pass and rep ass before the parlor window, I should ban sworn to these circumstances without a momant’s hesitation. Yet it would seem that snch a deposition would have conveyed a fal« impression. "For, shortly after, my husband,
