vast importance of hiving ibia great desideratum — this honesty of principle, of action, of thought— and of carrying it with them and displaying and enforcing it, in all the relations of life; and the reflection that they hate bo done, will be a source of joy and'coDBoIution to them in maturer years, and a well-ipting of pleasure to theta in the declining days of life. Did all possess it, how speedily would the cfaaogo in society b« seen, and all mankind be belter, wiser, and happier; and each one would ba enabled to think, “That the world was all the better, for their bating been in it."
tOrl|lul.) THE CULTIVATION OP THE MIND NECE3-
nor employed in gaining the good I opinion of otben. The. judgment (we form of onrttlree ia not made do'pendent on tbit opinion, ai it aomoI times happens in society, especially when we bare any reason to believe that it inclinea to the side most favor* able to our vanity. We most then feel and improve those powers which we possess, in order to enjoy (hem. For this reason as well at for many others, it may be useful to all to be accustomed to solitude, especially in the early part of life, while the mind enjoys in full vigor, and the spirits are not broken by sickness or tffticlion. They will then find the resources which they possess, and learn that it is possible to amuse and im* prove themselves. Probably a lime will come when solitude will be , unavoidable, or when, from distaste to society, or from other causes, it may appear desirable. Bat to those who have never been accustomed to enjoy the pleasures and advantages it might afford, it will then in all prohibit! ly, be a painful and dangeroot situation. Unconscious of the'resources which they might have found within themrelves, and unaccustomed to intellectual pleasures, they will hardly be able to acquire a reliih for them at a lime when the spirits, and perhaps (he temper, are impaired by the disappointments and mortifications of society. They will be apt to dwell on discontented thoughts, and fancy themselves better than the rest of the world, merely because they ate displeased with it, till their benevolence is weakened by their con tinually' viewing everything in the worst light, and they grow pioud of the faults of others, and not of their own good qualities. In such a state of mind, no advantage will be gained by taking a nearer view of their own cbaiacter and conduct; for, instead of comparing themselves with that degree of excellence which they might have attained, they will foim their judgment by a comparison of them[selves with the unfavorable opinion ; they have formed of ©there. Their ill-humor, as well as their vanity, will secure to themselves the preference, yet will deprive them at the same time, of any satisfaction this preference might afford; for their ill humor will make them a harden to themrelves, and their vanity ., will make them eager to gain the applaure of others, and they will be continually mortified and disappointed in finding that they do nut succeed.*— Thus the gloom of solitude‘will be added to the disgust of society; the pleasures of the one will be lost, and those of the other, unknown oronenjoyed. This being the case, how important it ts that we early acquire the habit of reflection;; for duly, on the cultivation of the mind [depends oar entire happiness..

OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER.
j SCHOOL, FRIDAY, DEC. 16, 1859. I Reflection is necessary to the bap* liness of all; therefore to acquire a habit of it, is a point of the utmost importance lo happiness, in every situation in life; yet it is a point too little attended to In most systems of education. According to the usual method, instruction consists to exercising the memory, while the powers of the mind are neglected, and either become totally inactive, or else run witd into a thousand extravagances, and prove the mast fata! enemies to that happiness which they were intended to promote. In order to prevent extravagant ideas taking possession of our thoughts and distorting the mind, it most be cultivated amt improved, and directed to proper objects, not ldst for want of exertion. The best book, or the most instructive conversation, will afford little pleasure or advantage by being merely remembered, in comparison to what it might afford by exciting new reflections in the mind; for these lead to new trains of thought, and make the riches of others become in some sort its own. Without .this, every kind of study wilt be dull and umn teresting; because it will only fill the memory, without improving the mind or affecting the heart. A new language: will only famish a new set of words} yet by comparing them with those already known, we may find means of expressing our sent! menu and ideas more distinctly, and perhaps of setting things in a dearer light, even to ourselves. The study of any branch of philosophy, instead of being merely an employment for the memory, may tend to new observations and discoveries, and raise the | mind by‘degrees to contemplations of a far higher kind. History, instead of ns only with a knowledge of facts, jmay give us a farther insight into life human heart, and tarnish many useful observations in regard to oaf conduct in life, if we only .accustom ourselves to seek the remote causes of great events, and trace to their source the secret springs of action, which will often be fonnd far different from what they at first appeared to have been; Poetry, from a trifling amusement, may be raised to a pleasure of the highest kind, if it makes us feel mo re strongly (heexahed sentiments wbidi it expresses, and elevates the mind .to a contemplation of its native dignity, and a consciousness of powers for enjoyment far beyond what anything in tbjs wotld can satisfy.. By such methods as these, some kind of improvement may be fonnd in almost every study, besides that which is its immediate object;, and a conscious-, ness of improvement is a never failing source of ? happiness and pleasure. The same method may also be apt plied to the common occurences of private life. Whenever improvement is realty the object of pursuit,, numberless opportunities for attaining it—too generally overlooked—will be continually presenting them* celvos, and it is astonishing to observe how often such opportunities are lost from mere inattention.*ai.d from want ot being accustomed to look within ourselves. Those who are continually endeavoring to display their talents to others, will scarcely ever do this to any purpose. Their attention is engaged by what they wish to appear, uot by what they really are. This is olten carried so far that they often impose npon themselves as well as others. And while this deception continues, the evil ts without a remedy; and all hope of improvement entirely at a standstill. There!* indeed, hardly anything in the world so fatal to improvement of every kiod as the practice, which too generally prevails, of substituting appearances in the place of realities. There instructions which teach the art of doiog this, however plausible they may appear in many instances) will be found far more pernicious than at first right would be imagined, not only ol setting np another object of pursuit in the place of real improvement, and teaching a continual habit of deceit, but also of bringing true merit into discredit. Those who are conscious of acting a part themselves, will always suspect others of doing the same. Those who can find means of acquiring the reputation of merit of any kind, which tboy do not possess, will hardly be at tbe trouble afterwards of endeavoring to acquire tbe reality.

03- It is a heantifiil idea—taught by some theologians--thal the enjoyment and happiness in Heaven, will ba just in proportion to tbe progress made towards perfection in this life. To the Christian, who has already “takendp his cross," and has a hope within him, both “sure and steadfastj’Vof finally reaching that haven of eternal rest, the thought must be very consoling, and have a tendency to urge him onward and upward to reach the, very highest standard it is possible for him' to attain, that his joy may be complete, both here and hereafter; and should those who attain that goodly land “by the skin of their teeth," find this doctrine to he true, bow they will regret that they did opt push forward while below to tbe greatest perfection possible for them to attain.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF HONEST!.
There be at least two hinds of honesty in this world of oars, which 'exist among, men, in different quan lities, and IB shown in various ways. The most common kind of honesty in vogue, is that which actaates men to he honest in financial transactions, to deal justly’with men whom they have business with—to pay the debts they Justly owe to their fellow men. This kind of honesty is right, and should be exercised by all; because no good man will do otherwise,'and It is even expedient—to the advantage of every one—to be upright in the business transactions of life; yet a person may be prompt and. honor* able to a cent, and still be entirely devoid, of honesty of principle.— We regard this dollar and cent honesty os the poorest bind in existence; it may be prompted by self interest entirely; for bov sften do we find an unprincipled man, who "owes no man a dollar."
Another thing, our ft tend tallows the wagon making business; and if a man wants a wagon, and is willing to pay the price, it matters not how had the man may be, or how detrimental his avocation may he, he gets the wagon. The lawyer tar his price tries hard to clear the greatest scoundrel in the land, or to cheat the honest man out of his just dues. And the physician for bis price doctors the man'ho knows lie can*t cure, dtc., &c., ike. Besides, wo arp not sure bat these advertisers would do more inisch’ef by sending private circulars all over the country, than they do through t|ie press. iv

Bat there-ii a higher and better kind of honesty than this—honesty of purpose, of thought) of action, of prfocip|e, in its significance. How few there are, compaftively, who are honest in expressing their opipiogs upon aqy snliject of importance, when their views may‘ be in opposition to public sentiment, or even in opposition to the views of a formidable minoriry; bow many, prefer rather to smother the truth, or be upon both sides, than to take 0 decided stand in favor or against every question of importance or interest that comes for their action or opinion; and bow detrimental to the best interests of society it is, that inch an equivocal course is pursued, the-most casual reader will easily perceive, after's moment's reflection. Again, there aro others who perhaps are honest in their thoughts and principles, and actions, as 1 far as they go, bpt from timidity or cowardice, they fail to tpeak or act ont their fioppst principles, bat bide their light noder a bushel; bo that, as far as their influence upon society is concerned, they are as blanks, cumbering good ground that ought to firing forth fruit abundantly, Every ohe has a position in this world, either for or-against every qbpslion that pertains tu the injury or welfare of society—there can bo no neutral ground—no half-way station—and fhat jnap who neglects to take a position, is shrinking from bis dniy, aad is justly chargeable with a participation in the enactment oi all wrongs and injuries upon society. However much a man's convictions in ay conflict with those of his fellow man, or even a majority of them, if they are honestly entertained, they will be respected, and it ia well that antagonisms exist, for by thair aid only can f spbject be thoroughly sifted, and truth and justice finally and definitely ascertained. And if a mao possesses this better kind of honesty— honesty of principle —he will carry it with him throughout all the transactions of life} and such a man is fulfilling the aim and epd of his being. Ha \?i!l leave a name behind bim f that will be as enduring as time—a legacy for bis children more e (during and noble than a monument qf granite.
