It has'been advanced and urged os truth; that the law authorizes or sanctions Intemperance”that the dissipated or inohriate person, by getting drunk on bis money and abusing only himself and bis own, has thole-, gal and natural right so to do;' and that he has the legaFand natural right to squander his property, abase, and taidtuat his wife and latn'dy; and that the Temperance Societies* by persnading bim jo unite with them, are depriving bim.of bis rights. I deny the truth of any and every one of the foregoing premises, To' the first, "that the law authorizes or sanctions Intemperance, 1 would answer: In all regulated communities, we know,-if n man is found drunk in street, he is conveyed by .an officer of the police before the court of the Mavor or Ahlcnubn, to answer!o tbo ' •, r misdemeanor or-crime with .which be stands charged, (of being drunk,) when ho usually expiates for his temerity by due or imprisonment, or both. Civil law is brought to aid, and more eQoctnally to support and enforce natural law*. The right of punishing malefactors derives its ori--gin - from thatwhich every individual originally has in society by nature; to repel the injuricscommittcd against himscli or against the members in society. ‘Every nun, therefore, has an incontestiblc right to take care of his own preservation, and that of society; the laws ’of nature are the measure and rule of liberty. Natural liberty is the right which nature gives to all mankind of disposing of their pcrsons_and property after the manner they may jndgo most convenient to their happiness, on condition of their acting within the limits of the laws of nature, and of their not abasing it to the prejudice of other men. Ebave said the civil law is brought to aii£ and more effectually to support and enforce naturaWaw, ana that luc larva ut uasuiv j»rc (be measure and rule of liberty. The fust and great law of nature is seif-preservation, and as tba Poet expresses it—"Self love, the spring of motion, acts the soul j . Reason's comparing balance rules tee . whole; Man, Ini for that, no action would at-' tend, - ' Ami, but for tlds, were active to no ■ end." . Raving shown that the civil law does not authorize or sanction Intemperance, but the reverse, and punishes the fame as a crime; and having laid down the measure of the rule of liberty, (as Evenly believe), we will next- enquire, if any ; man possesses the right to mar hie own : happiness, and the happiness of those with wham he associates, and as has been advanced, to abuse and maltreat his'wife and children? The laws of nature cannot otherwise be known to man, than as be makes a right use of his reason. — Now it requires no force of argument to show that when a person is under tbc influence of alcohol, ReaI 9 I son is completely dethroned, and its [dace is usurped by Passion, and (he [subject at that time bas abandoned himself to listen rather to the prejudices of Passion than to reason and truth, in such a moment U is that we find him abusing and maltreating Iris • wife and children. . It is then that ho feels himself strong—that bn is qualified to,.and capable of, perform tog any high, and mighty deeds of noble daring- and it is then that he possesses the - power and energy of all men—and no marvel—for he is then a man beside himself. Mount Sterling, Ind, W,

Who ie this stranger? Ho colls ot a most untimely hour. He asks to feed on poverty’s last meal. Ho speaks with a mango -dignity and authority- He be denied, thongh it seams hard* cnongh to grant hi« request.- Who is be? It is : none other than Jehovah’s prophet, personating at once the church, and that Divino power which jstveraii VitfngVit hand. It is Elijah, whoso faith can' open or shut the heavens. It is bo who can mock tho priests of-Baal, and then with a Vonl of prayev kindle celestial fire On the altar ho has furnished for the sactrfice. It is'hc who can bring do* Jiveramo and joy and life .to Ionian’s home—who can ensure tho hnfaiiing stippllcs of tor store, althongh the famine is sore In the land, and her meal is wasted to the last extremity. It is 1 he who can take the dead sen from the bosom of maternal love, and call back the departed soul son), raying to the desolate widow, “Thy son livith. 1 * It is ho who is permitted to overrule the agencies of nature, and who carries along, his path the succors and the sanction* of omnipotence. .Yet HlijaU is poor! So poor that he begs his meat from the rooks and ravens of-Chcrith, And whon the hroi.k is dry, nml his unclean patrons have forsaken him, he finds ho sustenance in the house of his fathers..
