I . THE ARCTIC DISASTER, 1 The intelligence received by the last steamer respecting tthe Franklin Arctic expedition supplies all I that \vas previously panting in regard to the fate of that unfortunate adventure. The expedition went out in May, 1845, and two years after Sir John Franklin died. The party had been previously traced to Gape Riley, at the; entrance of Wellington channel, where the last record of them was in April, 1847, two months before the loss of their coni' mandcr. The directions to Capt. Franklin were to pass through Barrow’s Straits, and proceed to Capo Walker, to the West, ami thence make his way south-west across tlie unknown ' space beyond to Behring’s straits, accomplishing the long-sought object, of the Northwest. passage. It would appear " that after Franklin’s death tlie expedition endeavored ‘io cany out this purpose, for the next we hear:of it is in April, 1848, on the*Northwest;- coast of King William's la lid, having passed but ollkirrojvV Straits beyond to Gape Wrtlkcr, and made about 400 miles nearly due south; Tbo expedition-, ists lind abandoned their vessels 'only three .days, before. The party then numbered 105 men, and had only; lost 24 of their number since the expedition had sailed. They evidently intended to make their way overland to Great Fisli * River,.or Back’s Rive.r, ias it is sometimes callcd.-r

, Db. Bcll’sCohpocsd , Pectoral op 'yVuJJ'CiiBBiiy. —Wa would call tbo especial attention of oar readers to the advertisement in another cot* umn of Dr. John Bull. For coughs, colds, 'fipilting blood, and consnmption, tlfere is nothing better than the above remedy. We don’t apeak an* knowingly. Wo have tried it effectually, and pronounce it superior to anything wo have ever used. Every one with a cold should use it, if they wish a cure;

TJLNEEE TUBE PEDDLERS,

The following is from the Valley Farmer, and. may ba interesting to some of oar fruit growers;

As guardians of the interests of Western farmers, X have been somewhat surprised to see that you have not through the Valley Farmer, taken .more pains to caution them against purchasing trees and plants from Eastern tree peddlers, who are now traveling West, and particularly our own Statj, in 1 great numbers. With ; a carpet bag in their hand containing two or three extra garments, and some beautifuly colored plates of fruits, and a nnrseryman’s catalogue, they travel from house to house, boring every-farmer urging him to buy, even when he tells them ho ' wonts none of their trees, ; /, These peddlers possess wonderful assurance dud,’press their suit until nearly kicked out of doors. . Their ; cdhsicnces are very pliable; and they are ■ ready *to guarantee that every treo'they seU.Avill produce just as lino fruit as their engravings represent. They tell the farmers that no whore else can they procure as fine trees or os fjito frujt os of them.-— They say that ■ trees raised in New York ore far superior to Western raised the cliiaale is much better than this to, raise trees in, and that they had belter improve this opportunity to get good trees and Ifnit, The plates of fruit they have are very beautiful and attract admiration,; for they have been highly painted for the express purpose of gulling the people.. The mating of these plates is made a profitable . business in YankceJohi, for swarms of tree peddlers, like the locusts of Egypt, go.otit Irom the East>hnnoHy to, scour the country. ’ ■ ■. : ' V’ *Bnt is it for the interest of western farmers; and fruit growers to Boy trees and plants at the East t X say ■ decidedly it is not. -And X will not only give the assertion, but the reasons for the assertion. -; ./

In the first place, trees.raised in this climate by the time of planting out in the orchard ore already acc(i* mated; but tbe trees obtained, at tho Boat have got to become acclimated bare, and too many of them perish before this takes place, Tbe climate of tbe East, where most of these trees are raised, is much cooler and mois* ter than here. Tho resuitof plant* iog them out under our hot atms, which they are not ased to, is death to a large number of them. The bark is frequently injured tbe first summer after planting by the sun, and the borer tabes possesion under tbo barb, girdling t£e tree. If the bark bad pot been injuredby tbo sun this would not have occurred, for this borer, known cbidly in the West, never attacks a healthy tree. The attacks upon these eastern un* acclimated trees are far greater than upon trees raised in the West, ‘.‘which are to the manor bora. 1 ’

Another serious objection to getting trm at : tbE JIast is, that the season there is so short that the nurserymen, are compelled to send scores of men. and women over their nurseries, batons digging tha trees, -to strip off the leaves, not being able to let nature take her course, but they most aid (?) Lor, in other words t) violate her own laws. The leaves not being allowed ta remain ou tlie tree their proper time, the wood Iroquentlydocs not mature, and. the purchaser must he the sufferer. Again,, so short is the season for digging there that the work u.ust all be dona on a Vast scaled —they are dug by the thousands to fill large orders, and the roots ot the truei'consequently are frequently exposed for liours to the drying suns aiid winds, before they can be packed. Sometimes they must ho obtained from different fields, miles opftit, and sometimes from other nurseries; so that by. tho time they are packed many ’ of them are so dried up that they can never hit made to grow.— And if'they are ting,- immediately packed in the manner they too -frequently are, by tho tirao they havo a distance of twelve or fifteen hundnuT miles. by our abominably slow and careless freight lines, if they survive, it may sorely belaid that they have as many lives aa a cat, which is said to have nine.

’April 22d, 1848—The Erelms rml Terror were abandoned in the ice in Victoria, Strait. Up to this time 33 of the officers and men had perished. Advance in AuianacLitehatobe. We observe that tho' astronomical department of Dr.Koback’s ScandL naviao Almanac, for I860, was prepared by one of the first astropomors of this or any other country—Prof0. SI. Mitchell, of the Cincinnati Observatory.' Scattered through .it are items, on rural affairs, from the pen of Sir. Hazellinei President of tho Cincinnati llorticuUnral Society. This wonld seem to be a decided advance on the old hum-drum style, in the indispensable article of almanacs, with which the community have been wearied for tho last dozen years. Wo presume that most of our enterprising druggists have Dr. Robock’fi medicines and almanacs. Dr. Roback’s office is at No. 6 Last Fourth street.— Cincinnati Times .

To be inexcnsablo familiarity in many in* stances practiced by many preachers with the female members of their charge--the sickly manifestations of affection" pretended to bo inspired by a spiritual relation are too commonly to be seen, are matters which lead in many instances to lewd ness and se* dnetion. To prevent which we do hope that a higher standard of dignity and etiquette may bo erected among the Reverend gentlemen.'
