Firr.1 tit importance in, your moo School system. Upon tbs sue* cesi of the system! in myJudgemeDt, depends, in a great measure, your character a* a State, and the pros* perity and happiness oi the people. Public virtue, based upon the iptelligcnce of the people, is the vital priu* ciple of liberty. No effort should be wanting to preserve, to promote, and 16 keep it pure and healthy. Teach them the nature of vice, if you wo*d byvc them ot avoid it. Teach them the beauty of. virtue, if yon would have them to lore it. Educate your children then. You cannot hava wholesome laws or have them properly executed unless, yen have a sound morality, founded upon the intelligence of the people. Oor system of common schools, where the rich and poor assemble together upon terms of equality, are laugh t tn the same classes by a common teacher, who teaches them the same great lessons of a common nationality, impresses upon them the nature, blessings and, value of our institutions, and the necessity of becoming useful themselves,, to transmit them unimpaired to our children. Regarding these schools as tho nurseries of genius, of virtue and of patriotism; believing them to be the rock of onr safety, I shall do all in my power ot carry out the system to the highest degree of perfection.
