/’iCorrejponJetvrt of Ujo Boston Journal, J LETTBtt FKOJI SWITZERLAND. ) Vevay, Switzerland, July, 1850. The route from Paris to Geneva, by the Lyons rail, is one of interest, as there is a pleasant variation ot beauty in the picturesque. Proceeding through fertile valleys and flowering fields*, by flowing rivers and villages; the Savoyah Alps end the Sura range coming into view as one draws near Lyons. The snowy summits of the former, as they mingle with the heavens, seem but clouds, modeled into mountain forms. One may take the express train end a more direct route by branchi'ng off . at Macon, reaching Switzerland in fourteen hours; hut as Lyons is one of the. pleasantest cities in the world, it is'worth a slight deviation from the direct course to go that way. In some respects Lyons resembles - Paris, with the addition of another river, the Soane and the Rhone both flowing through. It was my fortune to have favoring skies to give effect to the landscape; the light, grey shadows of the clouds subduing excessive light, a (id giving lender masses of sunlight and shade. Wc left Lyons just as the heavens gathered blackness and formed n fine background for pa! aces, vineyards and villas of that delightful city. While in front of us, as wo passed up the broad valley of the Rhone toward Switzerland, the rainbow beckoned ua ou, like thelurainouscloud which led the Israelites towards the land ol Canaan. As wo went on, hour al- , ter hour,, through ene continuous scene of beauty* pillowed, on cuslh, ioned scats, with plenty of room for the repose of one’s limbs —"tix.on a scat is the regulation, and not one more for that voiture,”said the can* doctor, 'df the Emperor should demand it)” —it was a perfect scenic feast. Then, as the sun’s declining raya mellowed the harsher feat-, area of the rugged mountains, we entered the rocky gorges of Jura. Nature seemed on (hat day to have fairly donned her best, and was posturing for my benefit, for scarcely was a glance cast by others of all that company of' soldiers, priests merchants and farmeie, who entered and left at various stations, at this glowing panorama. For two weeks now I have studied the mountains of Savoy, which are backed by the Dent dn Midi and the higher ridges of the Vallais op the gorge of the Rhone, and watched the changing moods of the greed Lake Leman) and at La'usaunc, Vevay, Clarcns, Montrcux and Villeneuvo, have viewed these picturesque and green vineyard elopes, made classic by the pens of Rossenu and Byron. BCtanaj Ovcetccu niuuuv.ua .») Villencovcstands the old Chateau do Chilian, built on a rock, and jutting oat into the lake only connected with the shore by a short bridge.; Itjs still used for a prison and , sort of magazine for military stores. The exterior shows an extensive v group of light colored stone building,of irv regular constrncliou, with turrets, towers and battlement walls. It was here that Rotmivard for political offense in: efforts to free the Genevese from the. Savoyard joke, was Iraranted ina disraal and damp cell, Va doable dungeon,- wall and waVobavo 1 made, like a living grave,” the floor of which is on a level with the laku. For six-years he was chained to. d pillar, otic of the foundations of the castle, which with the iron ring to which he was secured, are j shown daily to scores of visitors. It is a gloomy old vestago of feudal tyranny, and as one looks over the implements . of torture and death) which are still preserved there, one groans at the inhumkmty of that old wretch the Duke of Savoy, who could cat, drink and sleep on the borders of this placid lake, while Ids victims were hopelessly groaning in the cavernous depths .of his own*palace. ’ Near the cell ofRonnivanl, the old blackened beam still remains, from which (tic condemned were suspended, and the rocky niche )n the wall where the poor victim spent bis last night.— Above la shown the oubliette) where after a couple of descending' steps of fancied escape to light and freedom, (ha deluded . were plunged into the lake below, through a well of rock forty-fivp feet ml depth. • : , Vevay and ils-environs are farorite resorts Tor invalids dnriug the winter months, a& the 'sheltered position keeps off the cold north winds. Know rarely covers the ground, and I am Told there is hero enjoyed almost the climate of Italy, especially at Monlrenx, which is accounted by Bradshaw as the most desirable spot about the Lake. Here many invalids congregate to spend the winter, whose strength is msnfliciontto cross the Alps to Italy. The English are here in great numbers, and their value to Switzerland is well understood. •T am often in their company os ono of the family,” said one to mo a few days since. “1 suppose even the scenery of Switzerland seems tamo to you compared with America.”— She was astonished when 1 assured her that this country was nearer and more feosy of access from Boston than the Rocky Mountains to which wo must go for any king worthy of comparison with the Alps. Almost every boose of size nbonl the Lake is a “pension,” and for four francs per day ono lives quite luxuri- j coaly, 1 cannot conceive of a more desirable place of sojourn than thin, for the climate if very even, and the Alps and Lake are ever affording

Mr. Crittenden was engaged in defending; a man who had been indicted for a capital offence. After on elaborate and. powerful defence, he closed his effort by the following striking and beautiful allegory; r "When God in his eternal counsel conceived the thought of man’s creation, he called to him tho three ministers who wait constantly upon the throne —Justice,'Truth, and Mercy, and thus addressed them: %

She stood beside tho wa-h tub, with her red hands in tho snds: and at her feel there laid a pile of dirty dads; her husband stood beside her—tho crosiest man alive — the lost was twenty-nine years old, old, the first was twenty-five. The heavy wash was over, and the clothes hung out to dry, and. Tom had struck bis finger in the ’.dirty baby’s eye. Tom liad been spanked, and shpper made upon a erdst of bread, and then the bride and bridegroom went grumbling off to. bed. ■
