A' SEW BURNING fluid. A new burning fluid has been invented by the same person who first*brougtit into notice and use that dangerous combustible, cam phene, by whose agency bmjd* reds ol lives have been sacrificed. This new discovery—this new burning fluid, is said, cannot be made to explode—that it is an ulter.imposibnity' that any accident can happen with it. This prepare* itiiit U the common burning fluid, with carbonic acid, and yet* simple as the addition is. it destroys the explosive properties of the fluid, while its-illuminative power is not lessened. ’ We'saw the inventor take some of this, fluid Just from the barret from which it is drawn for sale, and prove to oor entile satisfaction that it will nut explode. He unloosed the lop of a common fluid lamp; and lighted the wick that tan down into the fluid—he pun re <li fluid front the filler through the mouth of a glass Jar of fluid, and Sfll it on fire—he lighted the lower portion of the wick as anove, boiled the fluid in the filter over the flame', and poured it, boiling hot, through the flame into t Be lamp, .(the must dangerous experiment possible,) and - other ' experiments testing it in every manner, and no explosion took place. ; ; •; •• ft 13 very appropriate’ that the above invention should come (torn the originator of campheiie. It,is’ pretty, good evidence that he confesses, andis penitential for.the great amount of injury, and suffer ing he has caused, ami hopes by this invention'Id alone for all(7in. VasetU*

THE EFFECT OP LIBERAL ADVERTISING. For the benefit of those who do not entertain a very high opinion of the value of Adve’rlising, we would call attention to its effects upon the circulation of a celebrated literary Journal. The proprietors oftbcAVw VbrJt Mercury ate in the habit df advertising very extensively, and their books>how a curious ratio between their receipts and circulation, and the amounts they invest in announcing new contributors, new stories, etc. The immediate returns on every such investment, we are informed, imuunt to almost exactly seventy live per cent., and of course, every subsequent day brings an increase of this amount, until, in * short time, a handsome profit is realized. ’ They now have advertisements before the public all the lime, in some part of the Union or another, and at short intervals, they flood the whole country with them. The effect is a conclusive illustration* of the benefits of this mode of increasing business when the article advertised is of real v alue, for the hona fde circulation of-the Mzaccav has attained to the enormous heigbtdf upwards of one hundred , and ■ eighty thousand copies weekly 1 Who says. that advertising is useless?-.; ‘
