THE I'RiNCBS AXLi THE niTHClAN. Few lofL-ienets w|;u were sojourning in Rome during the autumn of IS— can fail to remember the violent illness of the beautiful Princess C , which sud-; denty withdrew from the brilliant social circles of that city their fairest ornament. The means by which that illustrious la* dy was restored to health, when given over by all the faculty in Rome, is ever so generally known. She owes her life, and;is ever prompt to acknowledge' I the obligation, to the most distinguished physician of the, age. Hr. Thomas Hollowav. That extraordinary man happened to arrive in the “Seven hilled City" Just ns the crisis of her disorder, and was immediately summoned to her palace., tie found the Princess in & sad condition.— [luring an evening dnve through the Campjgna she bad been smitten) by I he fearful malaria which sometimes arises in poisonous clouds ftom lie adjacent inn t fires. The consequence was a violent bilioits.attack, terminating in dice. 1 - The lovely face winch had dazzled all eyes, and eclipsed all rivalry at ball and.banquet, was yellow as satfion, and the eyes which had kjndled love and admiration in a thousand hearts were duller than lead. In a feeble voice she. inquired of the doctor what could be''done for her,'at the same time protesting that if the biie that now tinged her skin were to remain after her recovery she would rather die than live. Smiling at the pardonable vanity of one whose queenly beauty was' the theme of every traveler who visited (tome, he told her cheerfully that her life and -her loveliness were; both safe. Mis prediction, proved true. Under the influence ol hii irresistable Pills,- thy Yellow* suffusion began to' pass olf: and day by day, like :o star bursting through a cloud, her beauty, was re-de-veloped. Within sixwetks ii was announced that the - Princess wonld soon glad-ren the eyes of her admirers at an evening to TakeI place at her chateau at Tivoli in honorpf her recovery.: It may well be supposed that the Prut- j cerj would willingly have displayed her! gratitude bn a mngnilicenbstate, biit this j Ur. H. would not permit. Hercfused to I receive anything, save o- niere souvenir; j and rhu presented 1 !)im with a mostapproptute one., It was a double'miniature, sel in emeralds and diamonds, one case representing the, Princess as she lay upon her sick bed, despoiled by disease of all hercIiDrins, and the other containing her likeness ns sfie appeared at the fete in the full blnutnjuf restored health and beauty. - The'memento was accompanied by a'.nole in .which".were thesewords. "Whenever yon look at the two pictures,, imagine' if you ran, my bou lull ess grjyitude” ; ll may w£l| be supposed that Ur,' lldilowaj- treasures; this delicate Tribute to.Lis skill, among i his' Choicest souvenirs.— “Courier Ur I 1 Popufo,” Home. 0*“Murder will out” is an old adage not alw-ays found to be true in these litter days; but there is another adage equally as ancient—thatriniemerit, Use. water, will atwavs'find its level;” and we find its truth abundantly established by the unprecedented snccess of Join DulVt Compound Prc{§ral of Wild CArrry. It is but little over a year since Dr. Hull first introduced it to the notice of the public, and. already It has attained a world wide reputation. RIGHTS OF WITNESSES
A very serious mistake, we ore inclined to think, prevails, with regard lo the position of witnesses on the stand.* We are by no means opposed to the most liberal latitude In the scarclrof evidence, and that every probe'should he applied which is likely to open a vein of truth; hut we ore decidedly opposed to the spirit of wholesale slaughter which falls upon witnesses, as though they were bullocks in the shambles, to be hewn down wilh sledge, cleaver and am. The witness is not necesmrity to be regarded as a criminal, holding a criminal position, and intending to act with hostile intent towards cithe. patty, or towards the truth sought to be elicited. The idea should be rather lo enhance the condition of a witness; lo heighten his self-respect, and lo impart lo the character o sanctity and importance which shall command the respect of'the law courts and Juries, by his best endeavors to sustain it.
