i Dciutios of Sandstone.—It is .found that alt sandstones do not possess the Fame durable qualities; that Foine of them soon moulder and decay by exposure to the weather.— Sand stone containing deep red streaks .arc not to be dreaded os, as these marks are evidences of the presence I of oxyd of iron, which soon crumbles | but. Sandstone of a close, fine uni* ; form grain, should always he selected, laud it should always be laid down liu a building in tie same position its layers occupy in *</«—that is, horizontally. No stone, marble, or sjudstone, should.ever be laid up in a building with their planes of stratification vertical. .When thus laid they can not so well stand a crushing force; they are liable to split down through these plates when superincumbent weight is placed upon them.. The edges only ot the layers of Mono shoo'd he exposed to the weather; because, if placed otherwise they arc tucnc liable to crumble and decay, - in climates like ours, where there is much moisture and frost. |t; a block of-sandstono be immersed in' a saturated solution of the sulphate of soda for a few hour?, then ex*.' posed to the atmosphere for a Tew days, crystalization will take place within the pores of stone, and causa the same disintegration that is pro* duced by frost.

IxTEnnETixo to Mechanics. —In reducing steel tools, such as. saws, Ac., on griudrloncj, tbo detritus is esteemed of so little value as to be allowed to pass away as waste. In Sheffield, England, where so many steel toots are manufacture], attention has lately been directed to utilize this waste, and with some eocce.''.-. It contains about 60 per cent, ■of metal, and the rest of sand grit. Hr;-washing, the sand is carried off, and the mbial being heavier, it settles to the bottom of the vessel and is saved. Alter this it is melted in a criicible, and run into ingots, and is foand to pay handsomely for tbs bellowed upon if. An improvement in lha tnannfactuie of steel, which consists in tha hue of woolen waste of any description, a substitute for charcoal has been provisionally specified by Mr, Kenwpahy, a chemist, and shoddy merchant of Leeds. He states that the nmierhd may bo nted altogether, instead of tlu charcoal usually employed, or- it. may be used in combinaiiim v.ilh. charcoal, the effect of which is a considerable saving in ihc niannf.icUire of steel, and' at the Mime time a quantity of stool equally good is obtained. . >

The same effect is produced, by bars of copper, zinc, brass and. btll-metal, when bested and placed on blocks oflead, tin or pewter—the bars fonr inches long, one inch and a half wide, and three* eighths of an inch thick,. The con* ditiuus essential -to.these experiments are, that two different metals must he' employed—the one soft and possessed of moderate conducting powers, viz: lead or tin, and tho other hard; and it matters not whether soft metal ha <-m ployed for the bar or block, pro* vidud the-soft met&l be cold and the hard metal heated. Night hath ita songs. B ave you never stood by the sea at night and heard the pebbles sing and the waves chant God’s glories? Or have you never risen from your conch and thrown np the window of your chamber and listened ? Listened to wbiit ? Silence, save now and than a murmuring sobnd, which. seems sweet musio And have yon not fancied that yon beard the harp of God playing in Beaven? Bid yon not conceive that yon stars/ that those eyes of God looking down on yon, were also mouths of song—that every star was singing God's glory, singing as it shone its AImighty Baker, and bis lawful,, well-dcservod praise ? Night bath its songs. Wo do not need ranch poetry in onr spirit to catch tfao song of night, and bear the spheres as they chant praises which are loud to the heart, tho’ they be silent to the ear—the praise of the mighty God, who beats op the nnpillared arch o f Heaven, and moves the stars id their courses,

The DaAi'Girr opFcasicEe.—A stream of water descending through the air tapers downwards, and at a certain, depth divides into drops, because each particle falls with accelerated velocity;- and at length—when lit has overcome their cohesion-leaves the other particles behind it. Bat when the. stream is enclosed.in a tube, this separation of its parts it prevented by the atmospheric pressure |hove and below keeping them together, and forcing the whole stream to flow with equal velocity; the lower psH dragging the upper alter it, .while the upper, by its inertia, equally retards the lower, so that they move-together with the mean of their natural velocities—and the discharge is of coarse, more rapid then if there were no tube, and will be faster the longer the tube.— Now, as the same is tree of a light, this explains why the drtfpght of a furnace depends on the light of the chimney. . • ! :
