The danger or our country becoming cor.taminated wiih an evil not earily eradicated, is augmenting as the world advances in years. There are many evils which disturb the peace and harmony of a well regulated comm unity; but the one alluded to, is that which the saints of Utah so fondly cherish, and is recognized by the appellafion of polygamy.- It is a Turkish custom, and met with favor in this country un* der, as it is said, the angelic intelligence communicated to the prophet Joe Smith, lie that as ijinay, in most or all of the S: alas-where civilisation is respected, aud education consequently encouraged, that custom is deemed disrespectful and a crime—■ crime meeting an adequate penalty with the torse thief, the bur?;ir, and the higbwaymaa.: And it may with propriety be said, that whoever favors the insli'.ulion, cannot be regarded in civilized iociety far superior to the btutes.'and in one sense classed with or beneath them—beneath, be* cause the human species possess reasonable faculties, and the brutes do not. - Suppose that Utah should ask admittance i into the Union, w ith her present corrupt in slitution, ought the evil alluded to be tolerated! Ought it. to be lolereted in the Territory f Would she bo admitted ! U is a duty we owe [to ourselves, and lo the Slates, .that cerUin [ precautions he exercised toward those who desire to be our associates, kindred or friend, and a -double caution ts necessary when a known aril is in connection. :
I was glad to see by the Reveille, of March 30, under the head of “The future of Veray," that your town is prospering; anJ I am glad to believe that this is true of every section of the County. Florence, during the last three years has built ■ neat church and a valuable mill. Not a -Township iu the County stands still. Farms ate improving and tiewf buildings are going up in every direction. A spirit of improvement in material veslla is abroad; and the intellectual and moral character of the County/if not making rapid and satisfactory progress, is every, year becoming belter and better. Sectarianism is decreasing and practical religion is increasing.. Thia Town and Township-’ arc building « macadamised road from the river to the Barkworks; a seefoo ofoue mile of it to the top of the hill being under contract, at an eipease of near $3000. This section is welt under way and wilt be finished in two or three months.. The projectors eipttt it will be pushed, on to Enterprise in the course of Hire* or four years. The.Presbyterians are expecting to build a new clutch in this town, to be commenced in the course of ibis year. ‘ , ■

IT The present military force of Europe numbers Atari y five millions of men, and tbe naval force over a quarter of a million. This fact will give some idea of the iriimens cost of maintaining the present political arrangements jn that quanerof the globe. Every little State and principality, as well as every great power, is increasing its armed forces, till a number fully equaling the sixth of the entire population of the Uuited Slates is abstracted from industrial pursuits, and their thoughts and inclinations directed to war. Tbe controlling governments may well hesitate about pulling these destructive elements into active operation.— Such a physical power, animated by all the fierce passions and animosities which war and national prejudices create; would so desolate Europe that centuries of peace and industry would not enable it to recover from the disaster.
