. It triumphs over all interests. The savage to whom fishing or tho arduous chase furnishes an insufficient subsistence, consecrates to his Fetish a portion of that precarious support. Tho warlike colony lays down its arms to reunite at the foot of the altar. Free nations interrupt thoir deliberations to invoke their gods in temples. Despots grant thoir slaves days of intermission for the same purpose. Tho passions, as well as interests, are submissive.. Tins sentiment is, however, associated with all our needs nnd all our desires. The citizen invokes the Deity in favor of his country: the lover, separated from the object of his love," confides her to the superintending care of Providence. 'Hie Michigan City "Enterprise" says there is a man living in that eonuly —Mr. L. D. 1’hilips—who received a pal* cut about seven years since for a subumline boat, and who will probably receive from the English Government halfamiN lion-dollars for the nso of this vessel.— The London ''Times’*, .speaks of it in terms of the highest praise. A few'years since there was much talk about this boat, but wo had heard nothing concerning it for sohio time past, until the statement of (ho London) “Times” appeared, showing that it is probable Mr. Phillips. will at last be compensated for long years of toil, and the inventive genius which enabled him to produce the vessel in question.— The boat can be sank, with several persons in it, and he propelled under water, remain there several hours without any communication with the snrfaco. It can bo mmiu to rise and sink at pleasnre, rapidly or slowly, so that it would become in lime of war one or the most effective 'and destructive of all destructive engines. Wo congratulate Mr. Phillips on his probable success.
