Tie long-talked of Great Eastern will be here in Jut/ or August.' It will be tht e'.ephant of 1959. The Portlanders are expecting “all the world and the rest of mankind" to mil them, and see the Leviathan in August, Politics have been somewhat mixed, but principles and men are gelling sorter sorted, and the lines of denrnkation for the coming contest ate being drawn between the antagonisms that ire to distinguish the coming bottle, between ptoU-cting taxes and free trade leni’enciei—the stand slock Mill policy, and go-ahead expansion policy. Union and antiL'nion, Cuba and anti Cubs, The Republicans wii! probable lead off with Wilitsni II. Seward as their candidate for the Presidency. ATTENTION, EVERYBODY
My stay of about six weeks in the Federal City, was most pleasantly spent at ihe residence of Amos Kendall, formerly a distinguished editor and politician. He was esteemed the test political writer in the United Slates, during the Administrations of Adams, Jackson, and Van Burc«. He was the 4tb Auditor, and afterwards Post Master General under General Jacksun. Since then he has bad little to do with patty politics; but has de voted himself chiefly to business, in which he has been as successful as he was in politics —which he left with nothing of this world’s goods. He has now an ample income of $Jih* 000 a year H,s residence is about a mile and a half from'the capital, just uiiisidr the city limits. He has h«Ul up a little village around him called n Kmd.ill Green," which constitutes a pleasant little social neighborhood of some thirty or forty persons His bouse is n plain .structure, costing, I judge, not much «ver 10 or JS,(<0f$ witjh the outbuildings. His furniture has been 1 put chased for its usefulness, and nut for show. It is in good taste, with the bouse, plain and substantial,'but not ornamented. Among the out buildings are his library, study, and counting room, (111 in one) and a bowling alley. The family 1 amusements are chess, back'eammoit, and "ten pins.'* No cords. - He keeps carriages and horses, and a* coachman and hostler, of-course, and three or fuor servants, two of colored. He i.< assisted by a.soo-iu-law, as secretory and aid in business/, iris expenues are only about $ *,000per annum.. He owns':nearly Kri acres of laitd, oiw( cuts his own hay and wood, and'raiseshisowh veg itables. and grain. I saw dung hill fowls, and a solitary goo>e un the premises, two watch dogs and nocats —im pet». , He is boring mi.artesian well, and has got down ICO feet, and evpecis to gel water in abundance; ai * depih not eicteding sjx or eight hundred iV'-r, at a cost of 3 or'4,b0(.'$. He has several clnfdre n.ali married bill uric, a young gtrl of about fourteen years, sill I at school. He is fotiun.rte and happyrn bis family. He has one daughter by his first:’wife, and suns and daughter by bis second, who is about fifty years of age, but does not look to be more than- thirty or thirty-five.- She is one of the most amiable and beautiful women ; of my acunaintance— plain, polished and delicate as well as practical, in the structure of hcr min.l. Mr. Kendall is about seventy years of age, with locks as wb<te as-uuow, and lieallh serijew.bat impaired by loo severe mental labor, hut unimpaired in intellect. Ills face is furrowed by the plow sjme of time, bin his clear blue eye is as full apV round .-if in early youlh. dtis is an active useful, happy and instructive htslory. At the present lime, however, he rides with the democracy in their present struggle for the acquisition uf Cuba; artd will, au doubt, throw his influence, which is by no means small, , with vigor and effort, against the opposition. He has already taken the field on this question, ah I sent a long and able article to Hunt's Merchant's Magueine, New York, to which he has tong been a contributor, which will appear in the April number.
