Happiness,
It appears evident from pnrpast expo* rience and daily observation, that the one great, and grand object for which ail mankind are striving to secure, is the enjoyment of true happiness. Although it is. exhibited in numerous ways, yet all possess a re tending to the one great and grand object—happiness. . When man was first created he was placed in a very happy condition,—inch a one ibal.thero was nothing wanting, for he had every* thing that could he desired, or that was need fat; but he disobeyed the commands of his great Creator, ami thus fell from his-glorious state. . Misery, .by this on’o act of .disobedience, was first introduced into the world. • Hence yon perceive that ever since that primitive period .of time down to the present, man has Wen endeavoring to obtain the enjoyment of true happiness, Some, and not 'a few either, are of the opinion that it consists in the possession of great ( wealth, and consequently they devote all their .iime and talents to the accumulation of riches,... Dot .this in our estimation is a had mistake.—it has bccn'forcver t.n the contrary; . TIteioara so. very many ways’of seeking this alldesired .object; that it is qtiite difficult for one jiiat ’starring out in the world, to.ascertain which is - the right w’ay, 'ibis knowledge should he learned by observation, hnl’ it U sometimes acquired by dnar experience.’, How very, necessary it is wo should consider well the path ia which we start'. Scenes of Childhood.
Of aK periods in life, there are none so pure?—none eq innocent as childhood. We took at the child in all iU loveliness and admire that, which we can never again possess.' A child's expectations may be disappointed,—dark- clouds may obscure its pathway, hut bow soon at), its troubles are forgotten; the dark cloud passes away, and joy again depicts itself on the fair brow of childhood. O could it be thus with us in'after. life, when tare and disappointment oppress the mind, now enfeebled by age, life worth! indeed be a pleasant journey, and death 1 scarcely desirable. When we reflect on the scenes of oar childhood, its pleasures, its happy associations, the honest rosy faces of early friends, we almost involuntarily exclaim, '*1 would I were a child again.*' Yes, pur young hearts were then;too full of mirth and pleasure to dream of sorrow and cate. Bat now when they 1 come, wo console ourselves with the thought''if we are sanguine and cheerful/' these wilt bo our friends. ; Yes, childhood has its pleas*, tires .and enjoyments,, its sports and its peals of merry laughter; but like all other things of a terrestrial character, they are transitory and wo are left “to look beyond this vale of tears’* lor that which is ever more glorious. : ; '

Thoughts oh Memory.
t Within the mind there is a. pi ace de*' voted to memory,—a kind of storehouse where recollections of the past are laid up and, present events : are' Wing constantly stored. It is the means by which we can recall scenes that have occurred long ago. There may he, perhaps, pictures a little darkly shaded, bnt the contents of the memory-fox are generally calculated to bring .smiles rather] than tears. Hour pleasant it is, when atone, to recall the events that have made us happy in*bygone days, and picture in our mind the images of dear familiar friends, around whom many tender associations are circled; they may be in a distant land, or perhaps have passed away, to the unseen world, but they are still alive in onr memory; and when' the sorrows of life gather around our pathway, they seem like ininr islcring angels pointing its to a land. Bat memory may sometimes actions that we would feign banish front our mind. We may have spoken a thoughtless word, or by allowing our pat' sions to rise have wounded the feelings of a friend. We may wish in vain that it was erased, bat memory will keep it fresh in our.mind; and perhaps it is more beneficial to ns (ban if it were not so, for it serves as a warning tb Q folate, Then lot ns guard against evil and accomplish all the good in our power, that when the silver hairs of age are scattered o’er our brow, we may look hack to a lile usefully spent, and memory will bo ono of onr dearest companions.
